Pockets of Peace by Laurie Stroup Smith

 Pockets of Peace
Book Summary

Five years after an unexpected pregnancy forces Lydia Byler to make difficult decisions, she is offered a job helping Birdie Miller manage her bed and breakfast in Pinecraft. Single, shunned, and desperate for a fresh start, Lydia agrees to relocate and reunites with the handsome Wesley Hochstetler.

Wesley has only ever had eyes for Lydia. Though their paths have crossed many times over the years, they never discussed the possibility of spending forever together. When she moves to town, he believes it’s God’s will for them to pursue a romantic relationship. But he doesn’t know about her pregnancy or the adoption that followed.

Inspired by a letter from the child’s adoptive parents, Lydia sews a pocket quilt for the boy. She learns he and his family will soon visit Pinecraft, and the burden of her secret becomes too much to bear. The truth comes to light, straining her bond with Wesley.

My Thoughts

Pockets of Peace by Laurie Stroup Smith is a heartwarming Amish tale.  It is the third book in The Pocket Quilt series.  Each book in this charming series can be read as a standalone, but I recommend reading each book in this engaging series.  We travel to Pinecraft, Florida where Lydia Byler is hoping for a fresh start.  She gave up a baby boy for adoption five years ago and the memories still haunt her.  Lydia gets to reconnect with Wesley Hockstetler to whom she has been attracted for many years.  Wesley, though, is not aware of her situation.  Lydia learns that her son’s adoptive parents are coming to Pinecraft and that he has been asking questions about her.  She is inspired to create a pocket quilt for him using material from her maternity dresses.  Lydia includes notes for the boy that she hopes will answer any questions he asks. Lydia worries what will happen with Wesley when her secret is exposed.

I thought Pockets of Peace was well-written with realistic characters and situations.  I liked getting to know Lydia, Wesley, Birdie, Noelle, Luke, Roxie, and the other characters.  I enjoyed the authors beautiful descriptions of Pinecraft.  Her vivid word imagery brought the area alive for me.  Pinecraft to be a unique community where Amish and Mennonite live and work.  Bicycles are the main mode of transportation (no place to keep horses in Pinecraft).  Adoption and the pocket quilt are two of the themes in the story.  There are touching scenes with Lydia writing the notes and making the quilt.  I liked how Lydia helped out at the local women’s shelter and the way the author handled the topic of domestic abuse.  I loved little Roxie.  I liked seeing Lydia get to know Roxie and help her plus her mother.  Pockets of Peace is a poignant Amish tale that provided a special conclusion to the series.  I am sorry to see The Pocket Quilt series come to an end.  Pockets of Peace is a special Amish tale with an unplanned pregnancy, beautiful beaches, a shameful secret, indulgent ice cream, a beloved boy, a precious pocket quilt, and powerful prayers.

Pockets of Purpose

Surgical complications leave an Amish auctioneer searching for his passions and purpose.

Book Summary

Two years after exchanging her first love letters with Gideon Petersheim, Dixie Yoder tucks his notes into her pocket quilt and travels from Pinecraft to Holmes County, hopeful for a future together. Upon her arrival, their relationship blossoms until the auctioneer has surgery to remove a cyst from his vocal cords. Complications from the procedure interfere with his healing, leaving him searching for his passions and purpose. Instead of leaning on Dixie through this tough time, he pushes her away and turns his back on God. Frustrated and heartbroken, she is torn between staying in Ohio with the new friends she has grown to love and packing her bags. Having lost everything, he must fight his way back to her, but his apology is long overdue. Only a grand gesture to show her how much she means to him will cause her to pause and reconsider.

My Thoughts

Pockets of Purpose by Laurie Stroup Smith is a charming Amish novel. Dixie Yoder has been corresponding with Gideon Petersheim since he visited Pinecraft, Florida two years prior.  Dixie gets a chance to visit Holmes County thanks to an invitation from her friend, Mariah.  When Dixie learns that Gideon will be having surgery on a cyst in his throat, she arranges to leave early so she can care for him.  Unfortunately, Gideon’s surgery is not a success and his career as an auctioneer is in tatters.  Gideon pushes away the caring Dixie which has her pondering her future.  What does God have in store for Dixie and Gideon?  I enjoyed reading this heartwarming Amish tale.  Pockets of Purpose is well-written with engaging characters. I love Dixie’s outlook on life.  The author provided beautiful descriptions of Holmes County and the characters.  That is important to me because it allows me to envision the scenes in my mind.  I found myself quickly turning the pages so I could find out how this story would end.  Pockets of Purpose is the second book in The Pocket Quilt Series, but it can be read as a standalone.  Personally, I feel it is better to have read Pockets of Promise first (it was a delightful story).  I am glad we get to catch up with Mariah and Josiah.  I appreciated the epilogue at the end which wrapped up the story plus a glimpse at a new couple (maybe they will be in the next book).  This is a sweet wholesome Christian story (kissing only).  My favorite phrase from Pockets of Purpose is, “Try not to dwell on what isn’t going to be or what might not happen.  Tomorrow will have enough worries of its own.”  There are good life lessons in Pockets of Purpose including that when one door closes, you need to trust that God will open another one for you.  You just have to be brave enough plus have faith in God to walk through that newly opened door.  Pockets of Purpose is an uplifting Amish tale with an anxious auctioneer, precious pockets, lengthy letters, a caring community, a serious surgery, and a compassionate maedel.

Pockets of Purpose is available from Amazon*.  If you are a Kindle Unlimited member, you can borrow for free.  The first novel in The Pocket Quilt Series is Pockets of Promise.  You can follow Laurie Stroup Smith on Amazon to get updates on her latest releases.  The author is hosting a giveaway for a signed copy of Pockets of Purpose plus a felt bird ornament (sorry, but U.S. residents only).  Click here to enter or use the Rafflecopter form below.  Good Luck!  Thank you for stopping by today.  I will be back tomorrow with The Moonshine Shack Murder by Diane Kelly.  It is the debut of A Southern Homebrew Mystery series.  I hope that you have a kindhearted day.  Take care, be kind, and Happy Reading!

My Thoughts

Pockets of Promise by Laurie Stroup Smith has Mariah Mast uncertain about her future.  Mariah has just turned eighteen and is beginning to venture out to parties on her rumspringa.  Josiah Weaver and Mariah grew up together.  He has been her friend and protector since they were children.  Josiah wants them to take the next step and begin courting.  Mariah’s grandmother understands how she is feeling and plans a trip for Mariah to Pinecraft, Florida.  She sends along a pocket quilt with inspiring handwritten notes.  Mariah is thrilled for the opportunity and enjoys time with her Aunt Birdie.  She makes new friends and meets a special young man.  What choice will Mariah make about her future?  Pockets of Promise is the first book in The Pocket Quilt series.  I thought it was a charming story with engaging characters and two lovely locales.  The author’s descriptions of Pinecraft and Siesta Key were spot on.  I could envision Mariah taking in all the new sights courtesy of the descriptive writing.  I found Pockets of Promise easy to read and with a smooth flow.  I like the author’s conversational writing style that drew me into the story and kept me engaged.  Mariah is just eighteen with a world full of choices.  I could understand her uncertainty.  Becoming baptized is a big decision and not one that can be undone without severe consequences.  I loved the concept of a pocket quilt.  Mariah’s grandmother (Mammi) provided Mariah with wisdom through her letters.  My favorite saying from Pockets of Promise is “When we make mistakes, God uses these experiences to shape and mold us.” Mammi and Aunt Birdie were special characters who helped Mariah.  Pockets of Promise is a story about friends, faith, family and the future. There is a recipe for Peanut Butter Fudge at the end of the book (yum).  I cannot wait to read Pockets of Purpose, the second book in The Pocket Quilt series, which will feature Dixie Yoder.  Pockets of Promise is a heartwarming story with a quaint quilt, a perplexing plight, a wealth of wisdom, a faithful family, warm weather, and a difficult decision.
Pockets of Promise is available at Amazon (paperback), Barnes and Noble (paperback), Walmart, Book Depository, Smashwords, and Kobo . Ebook version will be available soon.  The author is giving away one copy of Pockets of Promise, a $10 Amazon gift card, a turtle bookmark, and a handmade pocket pillow.  You can click here to enter or use the Rafflecopter form below.  Visit each stop on the tour to increase your chances to win.
