When They Met Again

Title: When They Met Again
Series:
Letters from Lancaster County
Author:
Leslie Gould
Publisher:
Bethany House
Release Date:
March 17, 2026
Genre:
Fiction / Romance / Amish / Contemporary

A gently humorous just friends romance from Leslie Gould, threaded with heart-deep characters and the timeless traditions of simple Amish life.

It's love at first sight for Adam Slaybaugh, yet while Joanna Grebel finds him attractive and is intrigued when he declares his interest, she's less certain of the potential for a romantic future together. Instead, she proposes they be "just friends," but Adam's not willing to settle for anything less than a romantic relationship. In response, he leaves Lancaster County for Florida, and soon after, Joanna begins courting Jacob Byer--someone she deems a much more suitable match.

When Adam returns to Lancaster County years later to pursue a career in his grandparents' successful home renovation business, he finds Joanna suffering from a broken heart. Misunderstandings and matchmaking schemes begin a tender journey of healing and romance--but is Adam's love enough to finally win Joanna over?

For readers of Beverly Lewis, Wanda E. Brunstetter, and Shelley Shepard Gray, a sweet Amish romance with matchmaking grandmas and themes of enemies to lovers, he falls first, and love at first sight versus "just friends."

My Thoughts

When They Met Again by Leslie Gould is an engaging narrative. Leslie Gould demonstrates a commendable writing style throughout the work.  Her stories are engaging, readable, and feature well-developed characters. I like the relationship Joanna had with her grandmother, Mammi Lu.  They were friends as well as grandmother and granddaughter.  Mammi Lu and her three friends were a hoot.  I enjoyed hearing about their antics while they were on their rumspringa.  I also valued the portrayal of the characters as imperfect individuals, each facing their own challenges.

My favorite book!

I liked the classics that were featured in the story (Women is my favorite).  I was surprised that Adam read the stories (few men are willing to read Jane Austen).  The romance between Joanna and Adam progressed slowly, but it gave them a chance to get to know each other and become friends first.  The Amish are known for their strong communal bonds, providing mutual support during both prosperous and challenging times.  There was only one thing that I found odd in the story, and it was Joanna’s reaction to the letters Adam left her.  It was out of character for such an insightful and caring individual.  The second book in the Letters from Lancaster County series was truly heartwarming, and I found When They Met Again to be thoroughly enjoyable.

Excerpt

The moment the ladybug landed on her arm, Joanna Grebel decided she wouldn’t go to her cousin’s wedding after all. She’d been cutting flowers for the bride, but now she couldn’t seem to move. Why had she thought going away for a night was a good idea?

The sound of a vehicle approached, and she turned toward it. A van slowed as it came up the driveway, and the passenger window lowered as Ike Slaybaugh called out, “Joanna! Get your grandparents. We have a long drive ahead of us.” His silver beard blew in the wind.

As the van stopped, the side door swung open and a dark-h aired boy—young man, rather—jumped down. It was Adam Slaybaugh, Ike’s grandson. He wore a blue shirt, black pants, and no hat. His wavy hair was too long. He was new to the community, but her friend Mandy already had a crush on him.

Mammi Lu stepped onto the back porch carrying a basket of food. “Joanna, grab your bag.”  Adam started toward the house, asking Mammi Lu if he could help.

“Denki. The bags are in the kitchen.” Mammi nodded toward the door, where Dawdi Marcus struggled to come through the screen door with his bag and Mammi’s.

Joanna brushed the ladybug against the columbine. Then she added the flowers— dianthus, lupine, and baptisia— to the ones in the bucket and carried it and the clippers out the gate and to the back porch. Dawdi Marcus hadn’t made it through the door yet, but it wouldn’t do for her to take one of the bags. Instead Adam hurried past her, brushing his hand against Joanna’s arm as he did.
“Sorry.” He grinned as he sped by.

She rubbed her arm. He took both bags from her grandfather.

Mammi Lu waited at the bottom of the steps as the men continued on to the van. Again, she said, “Grab your bag.” Joanna loved her grandparents’ place with its garden, red barn, and two-s tory house with a wraparound back porch.  She told her grandmother, “I’m not leaving.” “Why do you want to stay?” Joanna shrugged.

“I don’t think you should.”

“Why?” Joanna was nineteen. And more than trustworthy.

“Your father wouldn’t approve.”
“He’s in Maine.”

Mammi’s eyes shone. “Emily is expecting you.”

“She won’t notice if I’m not there.” They hadn’t seen each other for several years. Mammi’s expression softened. “Joanna.” Her voice was just above a whisper. “I can’t let you stay here alone. Please grab your bag.” Joanna shifted her gaze toward the van. Ike and Becky Slaybaugh stood beside it. They and Adam and Dawdi all waited in a semicircle, watching her. She turned her attention to Mammi Lu, locking eyes with her. “I can ask Mandy to spend the night.” Mammi shook her head. “Both stoves are cold, I promise. Dawdi and I each checked. And I know you did too—several times.”  Joanna’s face warmed. Was she that obvious?
“We do our best to make sure our home is safe,” Mammi Lu said, “but then we have to trust the Lord.”  Joanna took a deep breath, exhaled slowly, and then handed the bucket of flowers to her grandmother. “I’ll get my bag.”  She sat in the back of the van, ignoring the chatter and laughter of the others as they left Strasburg Township. Too anxious to read the book she’d brought, she stared at Becky’s snow-white bun right in front of her. It was so white—as pure as her bleached Kapp— that it looked as if she used a rinse on her hair, but Joanna knew that couldn’t be true.  When they stopped for a picnic dinner at a park a couple of hours later, Adam sat across from Joanna and said, “So how are you related to Noah?”

“Noah?”

Adam smiled. “The groom.”

“Oh.” Joanna frowned. “I’m not. Emily is my cousin.”

“First?”
“Second.” She paused. “Maybe third. They left Lancaster County a few years ago.” Joanna wanted to retrieve her Buch from her bag and read, but Adam kept talking. There was something endearing about his chatter, in an annoying sort of way. “I’ve known Noah since we were kids, when I moved to Spartansburg.” Joanna forced a smile.  Adam asked, “Do you live close to your grandparents?”  Joanna answered, “I live with them.”

He leaned closer. “I’m living with my grandparents too, as of two weeks ago.”  Joanna already knew that. Becky and Ike lived a half mile away. Mammi and Becky had been best friends since they were girls.

Soon they were back on the road, and Joanna fell asleep. Three hours later they arrived in Spartansburg, near both the Ohio and New York borders. The Englisch middle- aged driver, whose name was Nick, dropped Joanna and her grandparents off at a relative’s farm first.

“See you tomorrow,” Adam called out from the van. Mammi turned toward Joanna as they walked to the front door. “He’s such a nice young man, don’t you think?”  Joanna forced a smile. “He and Mandy are interested in each other.”  Mammi narrowed her eyes. “Really?”

Title: The Shop Down the Lane
Series:
Letters from Lancaster County
Author:
Leslie Gould
Publisher:
Bethany House
Release Date:
May 6, 2025
Genre: Amish Romance

Leslie Gould delights in this sweet and humorous Amish romance reminiscent of The Shop Around the Corner and You've Got Mail.

Lois Yoder has always found solace in the quiet life of Paradise, Pennsylvania, where she manages a gift shop that reflects her Amish community's simple values. Her tranquil world is upended when Moses Lantz, a former Amishman turned Mennonite and the man who broke her heart, buys the shop with ambitious plans to transform it into a tourist hub--a move that Lois fiercely opposes.

Seeking a distraction, Lois joins a bird watchers' circle letter under an alias. But unknown to her, Moses does the same at the urging of a friend. While their correspondence blossoms into a tender romance, the enmity between Lois and Moses in real life only intensifies. Can they overcome their animosity and embrace the love they've found through their letters, or will their stubborn hearts keep them apart forever?

This heartwarming Amish romance includes themes of bird watching, correspondence by letters, enemies to lovers, and family secrets for readers of Beverly Lewis, Wanda E. Brunstetter, and Shelley Shepard Gray.

My Thoughts

The Shop Down the Lane by Leslie Gould is a charming story.  I thought the book was well written with developed main characters. The characters are complex, realistic, and likeable.  I enjoyed getting to know Lois Yoder and Moses Lantz.  Paradise Found, the gift shop where Lois worked, and that Moses purchased sounded like a delightful place thanks to Lois (a shop that I would love to visit).  I especially loved the special tree display with the crocheted birds and the birdhouses hanging from the branches. I liked the bird watching aspect.  I have bird feeders in my yard, and I enjoy seeing the different types of birds that visit (we also have a pond in our village, and we get some unique aquatic birds).

The bird descriptions were striking which allowed me to visualize them.  It was interesting learning about circle letters. It made curious about how many different types of circle letters there are for the Amish.  I can tell that the author did her research for this book.  The Shop Down the Lane is a story full of emotion.  The author’s vivid descriptions allowed me to envision the scenes.  I could picture Lois zipping along on her scooter.  I am looking forward to the next book in the Letters from Lancaster County seriesThe Shop Down the Lane is a special Amish story with a blast from the past, a sold shop, circle letters, a soaring scooter, observing birds, courting troubles, and a hopeful future.

Excerpt

“How’s the birding going?”

“Gut.” She clasped her hands together. “How did you know I bird?”

“I saw you at the park last week with your bins.”

That was birding slang for binoculars. She tilted her head. “Do you bird?”

He laughed. “Oh no.”

“Oh.” She hadn’t taken John for a birder, although it was common among the Amish.

Personally, she tried not to be obvious about her bird obsession. In fact, she did her best to

hide it, not taking her binoculars from her backpack until she was at her birding destination.

Her brother didn’t think it an appealing look for someone who needed to find a husband.

Thankfully, the bird-themed items in the shop were top sellers. She ordered them not because

she liked them but because they brought in money, which ensured she had a job. “I don’t bird

much,” Lois said. At least not as much as she wished she could.

“That’s good to hear.”

Her heart fell. Not only did he not bird, but he wasn’t positive about it either.

John cleared his throat, wiped his palms on his pants, and asked, “Would you go to the

singing on Sunday at our place with me? Mark and a girl he’s dating plan to go too.” He

spoke quickly. “We can double date. We’ll pick you up at five after we pick up Evelyn.”

Lois tilted her head again. Was John Miller actually asking her out? She stepped to the

counter and repositioned a stack of gift bags. Jah, she was stalling. Just for a moment.

Lois raised her head and met John’s gaze. “Denki,” she said. “May I tell you Sunday at

church?”

He frowned. “I guess so.” Perhaps she should tell him no now, so he could invite someone

else. But what if he intended to court her? Could she be interested in John? She wasn’t sure.

She needed more time to decide before she went on a date with him.

He took a step backward, raised his hat a little, and waved with his free hand. “See you at

church.”

She nodded. “See you then.”

Threads of Hope by Leslie Gould

 Threads of Hope
Book Summary

Can they find a way to stitch their suffering into hope and embrace an uncertain future?

Tally Smucker's quiet life of reading and quilting hides her sorrow over her mother's declining health and the lack of a fulfilling future for herself. When her daily life is shaken by her free-spirited neighbor Danielle--who grew up Plain but joined the Army at eighteen--Tally's instinct is to distance herself.

Yet she finds she can't turn away when Danielle's brother, Kenan, specifically asks for her help. She invites Danielle to visit Plain Patterns quilt shop with her, where the story of the plight of a WWI soldier and the girl he left behind resonates with both Tally and Danielle, but for different reasons.

When Tally's mother suffers a setback at the same time Danielle's PTSD becomes unmanageable, it seems Tally's efforts to aid them only make things worse. Can the soldier's story, along with the care of Kenan, help Tally accept the hope that waits just around the corner?

My Thoughts

Threads of Hope by Leslie Gould is the third book in the Plain Patterns series.  Each book can be read as a standalone, but they are wonderful to read as a whole.  We return to Plain Patterns owned by Jane Berger where they have the bi-weekly quilting group meeting.  Tally Smucker and her mother, Regina attend the meetings when her mother’s health allows.  Tally has been her mother’s caregiver since she was eighteen when her mother suffered a stroke.  The Smucker’s have a new neighbor, Danielle and her daughter, Maggie.  Danielle grew up Amish but left at eighteen to join the Army to get away from her strict parents.  Danielle is a widow who is suffering from PTSD.  She is managing her symptoms by self-medicating.  Danielle’s brother, Kenan is worried about Danielle and Maggie.  He asks Tally to call him if there are any problems.  Tally befriends Danielle and Maggie.  Regina, Tally’s mother, invites them to the quilting group.  The pair soon begin spending more time at the Smucker household.  At the quilting group, Jane Berger is restoring an old family quilt.  She also acquired some family letters dating back to World War I.  She begins telling the story of Katie and Amos which resonates with Tally and Danielle.

I enjoyed reading this dual timeline story.  I found myself captivated and did not want to stop reading.  I like Leslie Gould’s writing style.  It is engaging and draws the reader into the story.  I can tell the author did her research for the historical timeline.  She brought the earlier storyline to life with the historical details.  We get to see how the Spanish Influenza devastated the world in 1918, how conscientious objectors were treated, and how the Amish were against the war, but they profited from it (vegetable prices skyrocketed).  Danielle could relate to Amos’ plight as Tally could relate to Katie’s.  The characters are developed, realistic, and likeable.  I like how the author addresses real life issues (PTSD, addiction, harassment, and depression).  We get to see our characters deal with their problems and grow as individuals.  They must learn to lean of God for help to experience the healing balm of God’s love.   Faith is an integral part of the story which I thought was beautifully incorporated.  I like how we get to see the parallels between what happened in the past and events in the present.  Despite the span of over a hundred years, some things never change (disease, war, family drama, war trauma).  Threads of Hope is an emotional story with themes of family, friends, and faith.  I am glad that we also got updates on the characters from the other two novels in the series.  I hope that this is not the last book in the Plain Patterns seriesThreads of Hope is a poignant tale with whacked caregivers, extensive influenza epidemic, war trauma, conscientious objectors, farm struggles, life lessons, and His healing balm.

Conscientious Objectors at Camp Funston

Threads of Hope is available from Amazon*.  The other two novels in the Plain Patterns series are Piecing it All Together (on Kindle Unlimited) and A Patchwork Past.  You can find Leslie Gould's other novels here.  Thank you for stopping by today.  My mother's eye doctor appointment explained a lot about my mother's vision problems.  She now needs to see a specialist for glaucoma.  We ordered two pairs of glasses (a sale).  I wanted her to have a backup pair.  One of the frames is red (she wanted a red pair) while the other is black, but the stems have beautiful scrollwork on them.  They were also able to temporarily fix her broken frames.  It was a good day.  I will return tomorrow with Blowin' Up A Murder by Tonya Kappes which publishes May 20.  It is the 8th A Kenni Lowry Mystery.  I hope your day is filled with happiness.  I am looking forward to watching the season finale of 9-1-1 (on Fox) and 9-1-1 Lone Star tonight.  Do you have shows that you watch regularly?  Take care and Happy Reading!

A Patchwork Past by Leslie Gould

 A Patchwork Past

Book Summary

A Patchwork Past by Leslie Gould has Sophie Deiner dealing with a Lupus flare-up.  Her doctor tells her that she needs two weeks of rest, quiet, and good food.  With her roommate’s noisy late nights, Sophie takes a chance and returns to her family farm in Nappanee, Indiana.  She is thankful that her father, the local bishop, agrees to let her stay, but Sophie can tell that her mother is not pleased.  Sophie begins helping Jane, the owner of Plain Patterns, with her bountiful garden where she reconnects with Derek.  It is through Derek that Sophie meets a local migrant family who begins having legal problems.  Sophie wants to help them with their plight, but she is unsure what she can do for them.  While weeding with Jane one day, Jane begins telling Sophie the story of Mary who got caught up in the Great Chicago Fire.  Sophie finds herself inspired by Mary.  Sophie knows she needs to tread carefully.  While she wants to help the migrant family she has come to know and care about, Sophie worries that she could make the situation worse for them.  Sophie also needs to make decisions about her own future.  What choices will Sophie make?

My Thoughts

A Patchwork Past by Leslie Gould is the second novel in the Plain Patterns series.  A Patchwork Past can be read as a standalone.  I found A Patchwork Past to be a unique Amish novel.  It is not like other Amish novels.  I like how it tells two stories and ties them together.  Sophie Deiner needs rest from a Lupus flare-up and returns home to the family farm.  She never felt that she fit into her Amish community.  Jane, the owner of Plain Patterns, is kind to Sophie.  While working on Jane’s garden and quilting, Jane tells her the story about Mary, a woman who traveled to Chicago with her father and ends up in the middle of the Great Chicago Fire in 1871.  While at home, Sophie becomes involved in the lives of migrant family who work on the farm next to her family.  I was quickly drawn into the historical part of the tale.  I wanted these sections to be longer.  I thought A Patchwork Past was well-written with developed characters.  The story moved along at a good pace.  I could tell the author did her research for this book.  I like how she incorporated the information into the story and wove parallels to Mary’s story.  Both Sophie and Mary want to help people and do the right thing.  Faith, friends, and family are woven throughout the story.  I thought Sophie’s story will give people a better understanding of autoimmune diseases like Lupus and Fibromyalgia.  Many people do not understand these diseases and, unfortunately, believe the person is faking it.  I appreciated that we are given an epilogue that nicely wraps up the story.  The author blended the various storylines together into one inspiring tale.

A Patchwork Past by Leslie Gould can be purchased from Amazon*.  Piecing it  All Together is the first book in the Plain Patterns series and it is a Kindle Unlimited book.  You can find Leslie Gould's other novels here.  Thank you for stopping by today.  I will be sharing Blackberry Beach by Irene Hannon next time. I hope that you have a joyful day.  Take care, be kind, and Happy Reading!

My Thoughts

Piecing It All Together by Leslie Gould is the beginning of the Plain Patterns series.  I thought Piecing It All Together was well-written with developed characters in a picturesque setting.  Savannah Mast is at crossroads when her fiancé calls off the wedding a week before the big day.  It inspires her to make a change and go back to the place she loved growing up which was her grandmother’s house. Her mammi, Dorothy Mast, welcomes her and introduces her to the quilting circle at Plain Patterns owned by Jane Berger.  Besides running the quilting shop, Jane writes a column for the Nappanee News and is a local historian.  Jane knows that God will send someone to her who will need one of her historical tales.   When Savannah gets involved in the disappearance of local teen, Jane begins telling her a story that echoes what is happening.  I soon found myself engrossed in this novel and did not want to put it down.  I like how the two stories (Savannah and Emma) worked together. I enjoyed both women’s stories.   Piecing It All Together is a story about friendship, family, faith, and love.  It was interesting learning about midwifery. I loved the descriptions of the Home and Hearth quilt the ladies created for someone special.  I like how all the loose ends were wrapped up with a satisfying ending.  I look forward to reading A Patchwork Past when is comes out in the spring.  Piecing It All Together is a charming story with an unfeeling fiancé, an AWOL adolescent, a determined deputy, a quilt quandary, an emergency midwife, and ancestral anecdotes.
.Reminds me of Grandma's quilting friendships
Piecing It All Together is available from Amazon*.  The next book in the Plain Patterns series is A Patchwork Past which comes out March 30, 2021.  You can find Leslie Gould's other novels here.  Thank you for joining me today.  Tomorrow I am talking about A Christmas Fair Killer by Amy Patricia Meade.  It is the 3rd book in A Tish Tarragon Mystery series.  I hope that you have a congenial day.  Take care, stay safe, and Happy Reading!
