Good Grief by Sara Goodman Confino

 Good Grief

Book Summary

A mother- and daughter-in-law. To move on, one of them will have to move out in a hopeful and hilarious novel about widowhood and family friction by the bestselling author of Don’t Forget to Write.

It’s 1963, two years since Barbara Feldman’s husband died. Raising two kids, she’s finally emerging from her cocoon of grief. Not yet a butterfly, but she’s anxious to spread her wings.

Then one day her mother-in-law, Ruth, shows up on her doorstep with five suitcases, expecting a room of her own with a suitable mattress. Abrasive and stuck in her ways yet well meaning, Mother Ruth arrives without warning to help with the children. How can Barbara say no to a woman who is not only a widow herself but also a grieving mother? As Ruth’s prickly visit turns from days to weeks to what seems like forever, Barbara realizes Ruth has got to go. But Barbara has an ingenious plan: introduce Ruth to some fine gentlemen and marry her off as fast as she can.

Soon enough, something tells Barbara that Ruth is trying to do the same for her. At least they’re finding common ground—helping each other to move forward. Even if it is in the most unpredictable ways two totally different women ever imagined.

My Thoughts

Good Grief by Sara Goodman Confino is uplifting, amusing, and entertaining.  I was not sure what to expect when I began reading Good Grief.  I was delighted that it was not a sad story (and it could have been).  I found the characters to be well rounded, likeable, and relatable. The story was easy to read with steady pacing.  The dialogue was natural and suited the time period.   I understood how Barbara felt when her mother-in-law, Ruth, moved in without  an invitation.  Barbara has been grieving the loss of her husband for two years.  She felt fortunate to have the help of her mother during this time, but she is ready for her family (Barbara and her two children) to move forward on their own.  A bossy mother-in-law who is a terrible cook is not in the plans.  Ruth is a delightful character.  I could understand why Barbara found her annoying, but she provided many laugh out loud moments for me.  Ruth had a heart of gold and an iron stomach.  Everyone deals with grief differently as we see in Good Grief. Good Grief is a heartwarming and uplifting story with humor, heart, and hope.

Good Grief is available from Amazon*.  If you are a member of Kindle Unlimited, you can read it for free.  You can find Sara Goodman Confino's other novels here.  Thank you for joining me today.  I really do appreciate it.  Yesterday afternoon, I went outside to get the Amazon packages that had just been delivered.  I opened the screen door to the patio, and, a couple of seconds later, I heard little feet slapping against the paving stones that lead to the backyard.  The ducklings came zipping around the corner and onto the porch.  That's when I noticed that the food bowl (it is actually a large plate with a big lip to keep the food on the plate) was empty.  I filled the plate and a feeding frenzy started (I wish I had taken a picture).  It gave me a good chuckle.  I hope that you have a delightful day.  Take care and Happy Reading!

The Secret Book Society by Madeline Martin

 The Secret Book Society

Book Summary

A captivating new historical novel from Madeline Martin, set in Victorian London about a forbidden book club, dangerous secrets, and the women who dare to break free.

You are cordially invited to the Secret Book Society…

London, 1895: Trapped by oppressive marriages and societal expectations, three women receive a mysterious invitation to an afternoon tea at the home of the reclusive Lady Duxbury. Beneath the genteel facade of the gathering lies a secret book club—a sanctuary where they can discover freedom, sisterhood, and the courage to rewrite their stories.
Eleanor Clarke, a devoted mother suffocating under the tyranny of her husband. Rose Wharton, a transplanted American dollar princess struggling to fit the mold of an aristocratic wife. Lavinia Cavendish, an artistic young woman haunted by a dangerous family secret. All are drawn to the enigmatic Lady Duxbury, a thrice-widowed countess whose husbands’ untimely deaths have sparked whispers of murder.

As the women form deep, heartwarming friendships, they uncover secrets about their marriages, their pasts, and the risks they face. Their courage is their only weapon in the oppressive world that has kept them silent, but when secrets are deadly, one misstep could cost them everything.

My Thoughts

The Secret Book Society by Madeline Martin is a story that quickly drew me in and had me curious to see what would happen next.  I thought The Secret Book Society was well-written with developed characters.  I thought the characters were realistic and relatable. The story moves along at a steady pace. We get to see a realistic view of what upper class women faced in Victorian England.  Woman had few rights in the Victorian era (next to none unless they were a widow).  The father, brother, or husband controlled their money, property, and what would happen to them (whom they would marry for example).

We get to see the control a man has over a woman in The Secret Book Society, but also how one woman helps empower them.  The women see that they are not alone.  They get a chance to make friends, share their love of literature, and learn some helpful tips (I particularly liked the different uses for a hatpin).  I liked that the author showed that not all men are bad. Interspersed throughout the story are entries from Lady Duxbury’s diary.  They are quite illuminating.  The author’s love of literature shows. I found myself cheering for these women and hoping that they would overcome their situations.  The Secret Book Society is a heartbreaking and heartwarming  historical tale about the rules of society, bullies, importance of appearances, friendship, a love of literature, and courage.

The Secret Book Society is available from Amazon*.  You can find Madeline Martin's other novels here.  This is the first book that I have read by Madeline Martin and it will definitely not be the last.  The next book that I want to read by this author is The Booklover's Library which is available through Kindle Unlimited.  Thank you for popping by today.

The ducklings are doing great.  They are growing by leaps and bounds.  Mama Duck lets them have some independence now and then (in other words, she gets a minute to herself).  The other day, one of the ducks lingered too long on the porch (eating) and got separated from the rest of the group.  The little thing was distraught and quaking up a storm.  Since I did not see Mama Duck or the other ducklings, I called "Mama Duck" and she came flying in from around back (I am not kidding).  The little duckling ran quickly to her side.  The rest of the duckling soon came waddling along from the back to join Mama Duck and their sibling.  I get a kick out of watching the little duck family.  I like that the neighborhood cats do not bother the ducks (even when they steal their food).  Tomorrow I am sharing my thoughts on Good Grief by Sara Goodman Confino.  I hope that you have a magical day.  Take care and Happy Reading!

Danger in the Wilderness by Darlene L. Turner

 Danger in the Wilderness

Book Summary

A search for a kidnapped camper

could cost them their lives.

Park warden Dekker Hoyt’s father-son camping trip turns into a nightmare when a serial killer abducts his father. With just seventy-two hours to find him, Dekker turns to criminal investigative analyst Blaire Tremblay to identify the Park Campfire Killer. As they follow his taunting clues and face increasingly violent threats, Dekker and Blaire know that one wrong step could be fatal. With the ruthless criminal following their every move, can they stop a killer in hiding…waiting to complete his deadly plan?

My Thoughts

Danger in the Wilderness by Darlene L. Turner is a captivating tale.  I was quickly drawn into the story, and I wanted to know who PCK (Park Campfire Killer) was.  I liked the characters with my favorite being Jayla’s Golden Retriever, Hercules.  He is smart, lovable, and cute (and he knows it).  I enjoyed the picturesque descriptions of Clovercross National Park in the Yukon.  The author really brought the area alive with her pictorial depictions. I loved the suspense, mystery, action, and danger.  I had someone pegged as the guilty party (I love solving whodunits) and I could not wait to see if I had correctly identified the bad guy (my mother says that I have read too many mysteries).  Blair and Dekker made a great team. I enjoyed the ending.  I am looking forward to spending time with the next Hoyt sibling in the second a National Park Protectors novelDanger in the Wilderness is a suspenseful story with a camping trip, a kidnapped dad, the taunting PCK killer, strong thunderstorms, Hercules with his sniffer, a ticking clock, a vast wilderness, and a helpful hairpin.

Danger in the Wilderness is available from Amazon*.  The second National Park Protectors novel is Trail of Mountain Secrets which will be out on November  25.  You can find Darlene L. Turner's other novels here.  Other books out today are Halloween Night Murder by Leslie Meier, Lee Hollis, and Liz Ireland plus Laying Down the Latte by Ellie Alexander, Smuggler's Cove by Fern Michaels, Mrs. Morris and the Day of the Dead by Traci Wilton, The Secret Book Society by Madeline Martin, Good Grief by Sara Goodman Confino (on Kindle Unlimited), and Detecting Concealed Evidence by Dana Mentink.

Thank you for dropping by today.  I wanted to share with you an amusing story.  My old dryer decided to go on the fritz this summer (it lived a long life).  I was finally able to get the dryer with all the bells and whistles plus it has a large drum (it can hold a king size quilt).  The day it was moved in, Dickens, my cat, made herself at home on top of it (of course).  It makes different noises depending on the function (I am glad that there are no loud buzzers).  Well, one day the sounds stopped.  I tried everything to fix it (the instruction manual was not helpful).  I then saw Dickens do something on the display, and, presto chango, the noises began again.  I wish I knew what Dickens did to fix it.  I will return on Wednesday, August 27 with The Secret Book Society by Madeline Martin. I hope that you have a delightful day.  Take care and Happy Reading!

Changing Seasons for the Country Nurse by Kate Eastham

 Changing Seasons for the

Country Nurse

Book Summary

In the quiet Lancashire countryside of 1936, city-trained nurse Lara Flynn must contend with far more than muddy lanes and boisterous farm dogs. Still recovering from a past trauma and an ill-fated love affair, she’s determined to prove herself as a capable district nurse and midwife to a community that doesn’t easily welcome outsiders.

As autumn sets in, Lara becomes a trusted presence at Ingleside Surgery - soothing frightened patients, forming a close bond with her spirited colleague Marion and earning the grudging respect of the erratic but brilliant senior doctor. But behind the laughter and team spirit, shadows loom. There’s loss, secrets buried deep in the hearts of her new friends and a face from her past that threatens everything Lara's tried to leave behind.

When tragedy strikes a patient - a younger mother with four small children - Lara’s personal strength is tested like never before. Can she dig deep to find hope and healing, not just for those she cares for, but also for herself?

Changing Seasons for the Country Nurse is a brand-new, heartfelt and nostalgic read that describes the quiet heroism of a woman making a difference in her community, one visit at a time.

My Thoughts

Changing Seasons for the Country Nurse by Kate Eastham takes us to Lancashire in 1936 where Lara Flynn is settling in nicely.  I like the cast of characters in this series.  There are the two doctors, Marion (the other nurse), and the housekeeper, Mrs. Hewitt.  We get to follow Lara as she goes about her daily life as a nurse.  She visits patients and helps the doctors in the surgery (aka office hours).  I do not know how she manages to ride her bicycle on some of those roads in the rain (it always seems to be raining).  It is a good thing there was the cozy Aga stove in the kitchen.  We get to meet a variety of different villagers as Lara goes about her rounds.  I felt for Mrs. Lennox who was having her fourth child. It did not seem right that the oldest child had to stay home from school to take care of the other two kids (he was only a child himself).  Lara and the rest of the household don their finest duds to attend a ball.  We get to see Lara build trust with her patients and make friends. The visiting nurses made a difference in their patients’ lives as we see in this story.  Changing Seasons for the Country Nurse is the second book in Diary of a Country Nurse series.  It can be read as a standalone, but you will better understand Lara if you read A Fresh Start for the Country Nurse first.  I enjoyed reading this heartwarming historical tale.

Changing Seasons for the Country Nurse is available from Amazon*.  The first book in the Diary of a Country Nurse series is A Fresh Start for the Country Nurse (you can read for free with Kindle Unlimited).  The third book in Diary of a Country Nurse series will be out on May 7, 2026.  If you follow Kate Eastham on Amazon, they will send you an email when she has a new book release.  Thank you for popping by today.  I will return on Tuesday, August 26 with Danger in the Wilderness by Darlene L. Turner.

This is 8 of the ducklings (the others are in the side yard outside the porch)

The ducks had a moment yesterday.  Mama Duck must have needed a break.  The duckling were out in my side yard on their own, but one little fellow got seperated from the others after getting a drink of water (I have water bowls out there for them).  You should have heard the squeaking (I heard it in my kitchen).  I had to help the little fellow find his way back to his siblings.  Mama Duck returned about ten minutes later after the duckling took shelter on my screened porch (that is what I get for having a cat door).  I am very glad that I did not put the rug down yet (they would have it a mess).  I hope that you have an entertaining weekend.  Take care, stay cool (I hope fall arrives soon), and Happy Reading!

The Marigold Cottages Murder Collective by Jo Nichols

 The Marigold Cottages Murder Collective

Book Summary

The perfect summer read, full of charm and heart, written in the vein of The Thursday Murder Club or Only Murders in the Building but with a southern California twist.

Mrs. B, the landlady of The Marigold Cottages is a stubborn idealist who only rents to people she cares about: Sophie, an anxious young playwright with a dark past; Hamilton, an agoraphobe who likes to overshare; Ocean, a queer sculptor raising two kids alone; the perfectionist Lily-Ann; and Nicholas, a finance bro who’s hiding secrets.
The tenants live contentedly in their doll-house bungalows in Santa Barbara, just minutes from the beach, until their peace is shattered when Anthony, a quiet, hulking, but potentially violent ex-con moves in. Three weeks later, a dead body is discovered on the streets of the peaceful neighborhood. Anthony is arrested, and the tenants heave sighs of relief. Until Mrs. B, convinced that he's innocent, marches down to the police station and confesses to the crime herself. The tenants band together and form “The Marigold Cottages Murder Collective” to save their beloved landlady. As clues are unearthed and secrets are revealed, the community of misfits only grows more tight-knit...until a second body is found. Full of eccentricity, humor, community, The Marigold Cottages Murder Collective will keep you hooked until the last page.

My Thoughts

I’m sorry, but The Marigold Cottages Murder Collective by Jo Nichols is a boring book.  It had a good premise with the charming square, the quirky landlord, and the colorful tenants. I enjoyed the picturesque descriptions of Santa Barbara. I did not like that the author continually repeated certain defining qualities about the characters (the ex-con, the agoraphobe, the perfectionist, shy and lonely,  fat and rich, and so on). The characters  lacked depth and felt like caricatures especially the police officer.   The point-of-view changes from chapter to chapter and then there is the portion written in script format (that’s when I was ready to call it quits).

There were so many chapters (ninety-nine) for a book that is only three hundred and fifty-two pages long.  The dialogue often felt forced.  The story fell apart when the author added contemporary social commentary (called “woke ideology” by some people) because it further distracts the reader (or, in my case, going what does this have to do with the murder).  The author does not seem to have any love for law enforcement (she gives them a good bashing).  The whodunit lacked substance.  The best part of a mystery is solving the whodunit (at least for me), but this one fell short. Fiction usually helps me escape daily life, yet The Marigold Cottages Murder Collective didn't provide that.

The Marigold Cottages Murder Collective is available from Amazon*.  If the summary of The Marigold Cottages Murder Collective appeals to you, I suggest you download a sample to judge the story for yourself (while it did not appeal to me, you may love it).  Thank you for dropping by today.  I, unfortunately, must do some housework today.  I do not mind doing the laundry, but I am not a fan of sweeping and dusting (I keep trying to teach the cat to dust, but she prefers to nap).  Tomorrow I am featuring Changing Seasons for the Country Nurse by Kate Eastham which comes out August 22.  I hope that you have a merry day.  Take care and Happy Reading!

Something to Look Forward To by Fannie Flagg

 Something to Look Forward To
Book Summary

A tapestry of joyful and startling interconnected stories that celebrate how people from all across America cope with adversity and unexpected changes in a confusing world—from the beloved New York Times bestselling author of Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe

Fannie Flagg once said that what the world needs now is a good laugh. And that is what she gives us in these warmhearted, always surprising stories about people who are finding clever ways to deal with the curveballs life sometimes throws at us.
Velma in Kansas, a loving great-grandmother, struggles to bridge generational gaps with her family. We cheer for Helen, in Ithaca, New York, who takes an audacious course of action when her husband leaves her for a younger woman. In Bent Fork, Wyoming; in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; in Tucson, Arizona; and in towns and cities all across America, people figure out inventive ways to overcome obstacles to happiness. And in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Special Agent Frawley is studying the mysteries of being human from an original perspective.

With her imagination, humor, and great understanding of the human heart, Fannie Flagg holds a mirror up to the foibles, ingenuity, and imagination of people, inspiring us to laugh at the sometimes eccentric, sometimes brilliant ways people cope with, and ultimately prevail over, the challenges of modern life.
My Thoughts

Something to Look Forward To by Fannie Flagg is a collection of thirty character driven short stories.  The stories vary in length and many of them are interconnected.  My favorite involves Velma who is eighty-three years old and lives in Cottonwood, Kansas.  She loves her granddaughter and great-granddaughter dearly, but they live in California.  Velma is always asking them to visit, but the granddaughter always has a reason why they cannot.  Velma is very upbeat and finds joy in the simplest things (such as a field of blooming flowers or her chickens).  I had to crack up at Velma’s comments on modern ideas (they/them through her for a loop).  I was a tad disappointed at how Velma’s story ended.  Some of the stories were better than others. There was one that I just loved.  The woman was certainly clever. The alien story did not go with the rest of the collection (it was different).  Most of the stories, though, had endearing characters, warmhearted humor, and homespun wisdom in true Fannie Flagg style.  I liked how she captured the small joys, everyday struggles, and people’s quirks.  Fannie Flagg shows us with the stories in Something to Look Forward To that life can be funny, a little messy at times, sometimes odd, but full of good people and love.

Something to Look Forward To is available from Amazon*.  You can find Fannie Flagg's other novels here.  If you follow Fannie Flagg on Amazon, they will notify you when she has a new book release.  Thank you for joining me today.  I will return tomorrow with The Marigold Cottages Murder Collective by Jo Nichols.  I am off to run a couple of errands.  While I can get most items delivered, there are one or two that I cannot (and I really tried).

Here is a duck update. The ducks are growing up so fast.  They have doubled in size.  They are now too big to swim in the water dish, but they are tall enough to reach the plants in my raised garden beds (I had a discussion with Mama Duck about it).  They are also at the stage where they play.  They are fun to watch.  I hope that you have an uplifting day.  Take care, stay cool (our air conditioner is having a hard time keeping the house cool against the record temperatures--102 degrees is too hot), and Happy Reading!

When a food convention turns fatal, Tiffany Austin will have to cook up a scheme to catch a killer . . .

The national Foodie Fest is in town and food blogger Tiffany Austin is thrilled to report on the event, even if it means crossing paths with an arrogant and annoying chef from her past. The man can’t help boasting of his success, but he also lets slip to Tiffany that he’s publishing a tell-all memoir that will be filled with scandalous secrets about many people in the food industry. It’s a risky career move, and maybe just plain risky, as Tiffany discovers later that day when she finds the chef’s dead body mere steps from the convention center.

With any number of reputations and careers at stake if the chef’s memoir were ever published, Tiffany realizes virtually everyone at the event is a suspect. Wending her way through the convention crowd in her guise as a reporter, she cautiously questions as many of the participants as she can, hoping to unearth a telling clue or a false alibi. Because while everyone has a skeleton or two in the closet, Tiffany knows someone at the food fest has a secret they’d kill to protect—and would kill for again if she gets too close to the truth . . .

Includes scrumptious Foodie Fest recipes!

My Thoughts

A Dish Best Served Dead by T.C. LoTempio is a cute cozy mystery.  I liked Tiffany, the main character, who is a chef turned food blogger.  I liked her cameraman and sleuthing sidekick, Jimmy.  The pair make a great team.  The food descriptions will have your mouth watering.  Tiffany’s bestie was grateful (I’m surprised she did not sit up and beg) for the doggy bags that Tiffany brought home from Foodie Fest (there are recipes for a couple of the dishes at the end of the book).  The whodunit involved a man who I was surprised had lived as long as he had (he made a lot of enemies).  There is no shortage of suspects.  The detective in charge of the case is Tiffany’s love interest who tells her often to stay out of the case, though, he does appreciate the helpful information that she shares with him. A Dish Best Served Dead is the third A Tiffany Austin Food Blogger Mystery and it can easily be read as a standalone.  I hope that Jimmy will make a return appearance in future books in the series.  A Dish Best Served Dead is fun foodie mystery with a conceited chef, an aloof assistant, a pleasant photographer partner, scrumptious cuisine, an admonishing detective, a surplus of suspects, and a killer with a pistol.

A Dish Best Served Dead is available from AmazonThe first two books in A Tiffany Austin Food Blogger Mysteries are Eat, Drink, and Drop Dead and A Crust to Die For.  You can find T.C.
