My Thoughts

High Tea and Misdemeanors by Laura Childs is the twenty-ninth A Tea Shop Mystery.  It can be read as a standalone for those new to the series.  This is one of the two series that got me hooked on cozy mysteries (when they only came out in paperback).  I always enjoy my visits to Charleston, South Carolina, and the Indigo Tea Shop.  I like checking in on Theodosia, Drayton, Hayley, and, of course, Earl Gray.  I am not a fan of Riley, Theo’s boyfriend, who does not understand her curious nature and desire to investigate crimes.  Theo and Drayton make a great team.  The mystery was interesting, but it was easy to solve.  The guilty person stood out like a woman wearing a red dress at a black and white party.  There were various events that kept things lively.  

I liked the chapters from the killer’s perspective (it was obvious their elevator stopped a few floors short of the top).   The reveal was suspenseful and answered any lingering questions.  There are recipes at the end of the book along with tea tips.  I do wish, though, that the story had more depth like the books at the beginning of the series and less repetitive details.  I liked that High Tea and Misdemeanors was a Halloween story (it is a shame that the book did not come out in the fall).  The Indigo Tea Shop was decked out for a spooky tea and there were other Halloween themed events.  I look forward to Theodosia’s next adventure.  High Tea and Misdemeanors is a merry mystery with a glass catastrophe, scrumptious scones, chocolate covered cherries, a cemetery crawl, a creepy killer, and tasty tea.

My Thoughts

Guilt and Ginataan by Mia P. Manansala is an enjoyable cozy mystery.  Shady Palm’s Corn Festival is underway with a plethora of corny treats and a crafty corn maze.  I like the characters in this series.  They are realistic and relatable.  I like the close family ties and friendships.  The food and drink descriptions will have your mouth watering (there are recipes at the end of the book).  The mystery was fun but a tad predictable.  Lila and her friends set out to prove that Adeena did not commit the crime.  There are several suspects along with a red herring.  There was plenty of drama.  The whodunit ended abruptly, and I was left with unanswered questions.  This time around, there was less time with aunties, but more with the friends.  

Ginataan 

I enjoyed the humor sprinkled throughout the story.  Guilt and Ginataan is the fifth book in A Tita Rosie’s Kitchen Mysteries.  It can be read as a standalone for those new to the series.  I am looking forward to the next book in this charming series.  Guilt and Ginataan is a corntastic cozy with fantastic food, delightful drinks, an alarming corn maze, a friend in need, clever crafts, nosy aunties, and a killer to catch.

Or the mystery man who spoke to Lauren just before she was found dead? With the suspect count climbing higher and more information about Lauren's past coming to light, will Tricia be able to give this story a happily ever after?

A Controversial Cover by Lorna Barrett is the eighteenth A Booktown Mystery.  The author provides the background information needed for new readers.  A Controversial Cover is easy to read, but it is bland.  Tricia Miles, I believe, is in her mid-forties, but she comes across as older (and stodgy).  Tricia is dating David, a twenty something children’s librarian which is raising more than a few eyebrows in the town.  David’s quirky attire to a funeral caused eyes to widen and tongues to wag.  There are repetitive details in A Controversial Cover.  I lost track of how many times it was mentioned that Tricia (well, technically, her assistant manager) is having trouble tracking down vintage mysteries.  We get an update on Angelica’s dog each time Tricia goes over (which is usually twice a day).  Food is a big topic in the book.  I believe food (as well as David and Tricia’s romance) overshadows the whodunit (Tricia going grocery shopping, Tricia’s bare cupboards, Tricia and Angelica’s having lunch or dinner).

The mystery was uncomplicated.  By the halfway point, I was beginning to doubt there would be any investigation.  I felt bad for the teacher that Tricia left dangling in the wind.  The reveal was less than satisfactory.  I was not a fan of the addition of foul language (there was a mild amount, but I would prefer none).  There were some odd sentences in the story as well (such as, “quiet money in the collection containers”).  I like Booktown (I cannot resist a bookshop and a town full of them is nirvana), but this visit ranks low on the happiness meter.  I am sure my next visit to Booktown will have me smiling and curious to see what mystery Tricia finds herself mixed up in.

The murder of a local contractor may be the final nail in the coffin for Tricia Miles in the latest entry to Lorna Barrett's New York Times bestselling Booktown series.

It's a busy summer in Booktown. Contractor Jim Stark is in great demand: he’s overseeing a number of projects, including Angelica Miles's newly constructed building on Main Street, finishing up the new brew pub, and gutting a stone mansion off Main Street that Angelica bought to be the world headquarters for Nigela Ricita Asssociates. It’ll house office space where her marketing staff and the rest of the NR Associates clerical personnel will work.

Tricia Miles and Angelica arrive at the mansion before their workday to see how the construction is going. They find the place unlocked and Stark’s right-hand man, Sanjay Arya, dead—bludgeoned to death. The loss of the contractor’s top man threatens all the projects in the works, which would effectively ruin the expensive marketing plan that the Chamber of Commerce has been working. Is Jim a suspect? (He’d be stupid to kill the person he depends on to keep the projects going.) But Stark also thinks his wife, who was very chummy with Sanjay, might have been cheating on him with the second-in-command, making him a likely suspect.

Once again Tricia finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation, but can she find the killer before he or she has the chance to bring the hammer down?

My Thoughts

A Questionable Character by Lorna Barrett transports readers to Stoneham, New Hampshire where Angelica and Tricia find their contractor’s right-hand man, Sanjay Arya, dead, dead inside the building being renovated for the new the headquarters of Nigela Ricita Associates.  Tricia Miles, with help from the new Chamber of Commerce intern, David, investigates the crime.  I look forward to visiting Stoneham each year.  This visit, though, was a letdown.  The story seemed to focus on the Tricia’s day-to-day activities, especially her daily lunch and dinner with her sister.  The new Chamber of Commerce intern, David Price, is a quirky new addition.  He is a library sciences graduate student with a unique style of dress (personally, I liked his choice of brooches).  David is curious about the murder and wants to help Tricia solve the case.  The attraction between the two is apparent from the beginning. People’s reactions to this pairing will be entertaining.  I was not a fan of how Angelica treated Tricia over this new development.  She acted like it was scandalous for her sister to be interested in a younger man.  

The mystery was unexciting.  It lacked action, suspense, and suspects.  It felt like the author did not take the time to plan it out.  It seemed like the guilty party was plucked out of thin air.  There is a secondary mystery that has Angelica up in arms.  The guilty party to that whodunit was easy to identify.  The reveal neatly wraps up both mysteries.  I was envious of the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boy books that Pixie and David found at an estate sale (at such a good price too).  I wanted them for myself.  There is an incident in the book that will either make you laugh or cringe (or both).  You laugh because of the description and cringe for the same reason (it is something you never want to happen to you).  Tricia does have an enlightening conversation with Mr. Everett.  I wonder what Tricia will do with the information she learned.  While I like the characters and the setting, I was not a fan of the storyline.  A Questionable Character was not at the same level as earlier book in the series.  A Questionable Character is the seventeenth book in A Booktown Mysteries.  While it could be read as a standalone, I recommend reading the earlier books in the series as they are more engaging.

Lucy must figure out if the two are connected before it’s too late—both for Bertie’s friend and the rest of her wedding guests.

With the Classic Novel Reading Club reading the Selected Works of Edgar Allan Poe—Lucy wonders if the master of the macabre can assist her investigation or if the hunt for the killer’s identity will remain as nothing more than an unsolved mystery.

My Thoughts

Death Knells and Wedding Bells by Eva Gates has readers returning to Nags Head, North Carolina for Lucy and Connor’s wedding.  I like how everyone (family, friends, co-workers, and even a soon-to-be ex-wife) came together for the couple’s wedding.  There was a wrinkle or two during the day, but it was overall a wonderful wedding day which Lucy and Connor deserved.  The murder of Aunt Joyce’s plus one casts a shadow on the wedding weekend.  I know Lucy was enjoying her wedding weekend, but I have a feeling that a murder was icing on the cake (she loves solving a whodunit).  The force’s newest detective, Detective North, is not happy with Lucy’s sleuthing and is vocal in expressing his displeasure to Detective Sam Watson.  The mystery was straightforward.  It is a whodunit that can easily be solved early in the book.  I did, though, enjoy following Lucy as she questioned people and searched for clues.  I love Charlie’s role in the takedown.  I could envision the scene in my head and it had me laughing.

Eva Gates has created a great cast of characters for this series.  I like Lucy’s curiosity.  She has questions and Lucy likes to get answers.  Lucy is a natural born sleuth.  It is also what makes her a good librarian.  I like how the characters are there for each other.  Bertie may be Lucy’s boss, but she is also a friend.  The same goes for the rest of Lucy’s coworkers.  I understand Lucy’s motivation for wanting to help Bertie’s plus one, Eddie.  I enjoyed the beautiful descriptions of Nags Head, Lucy and Connor’s new home, and Bodie Island Lighthouse Library.  I like how the author likens the library to the TARDIS.  There is no way the lighthouse could be big enough to house the library and Lucy’s Lighthouse Aerie (now Louise Jane’s).  It gives readers a chance to use their imagination (I see this regular lighthouse on the outside with a beautiful, big library on the inside).  Death Knells and Wedding Bells is the tenth A Lighthouse Library Mystery.  It can be read as a standalone, but new readers will struggle in the beginning (gets easier the further you get into the story).  I did find the pacing a little slow at times, especially in the beginning.  In addition, there is repetition of information (case details, background on suspects and victim). Overall, though, I enjoyed my latest trip to the Outer Banks, and I am looking forward to my next visit.   There is humor sprinkled throughout the story.  Louise Jane provides several mirthful moments.  I enjoyed the book club discussions about Edgar Allan Poe’s stories (A Tell-Tale Heart is my favorite).  I like how the death of Aunt Joyce’s plus one related to The Cask of Amontillado.  Death Knells and Wedding Bells takes readers to the Outer Banks with beautiful beaches, jovial nuptials, a snuffed out plus one, an absent date, a single-minded detective, and a probing bride.

My Thoughts

Digging Up Daisy by Sherry Lynn takes us to Harborside, Maine.  I enjoyed the descriptions of the coastal town of Harborside, Aunt Tilly’s bed and breakfast and the grounds of the Salty Breeze Inn, and the lovely plantings created by Kinsley.  The author brought the cliffs and sea to life.  We get to know Kinsley, Kinsley’s bestie, and Aunt Tilly.  Aunt Tilly is a sweet, hardworking woman.  I can understand why Aunt Tilly and Kinsley enjoy living on that property.  The views sound amazing.  I could envision living in Kinsley’s cozy cottage with the ocean breeze and the sound of the ocean lulling me to sleep (it would be a peaceful place to read). 

The mystery started off in a unique way with Kinsley finding a recently murdered woman’s shoe under a plant while sprucing up the landscaping on the grounds of the Salty Breeze Inn.  The last thing Kinsley wants is to bring unwanted publicity to her aunt’s bed and breakfast with the annual parade of homes, The Walk Inn fast approaching.  Kinsley is also worried that her aunt will be a suspect in what has been dubbed the Cinderella Murder.  Kinsley, with help from her best friend, Becca begins investigating.  I like that Kinsley shares information with Detective Rachel Hayes.  There are several suspects in the crime.  There are clues to help readers solve the whodunit.  Digging Up Daisy is the first of A Mainely Murder Mysteries.  This gives the author an opportunity to make changes.  Digging Up Daisy is a floral fiesta with an unearthed shoe, sea breezes, plant problems, an amazing aunt, a planted threat, and a lurking killer.
