Wedding Day and Foul Play by Duffy Brown: A Book Blast with Giveaway!

Wedding Day and Foul Play (A Consignment Shop Mystery) by Duffy Brown

Wedding Day and Foul Play (A Consignment Shop Mystery)

Wedding cake on top of the table, a dead body underneath and a favorite auntie accused of putting it there is no way to start a marriage.

It’s been one-hundred-and-eighty-three days and fourteen hours since Reagan Summerside tripped across yet another dead body but hopes of her Savannah wedding to Walker Boone going off without a hitch are dashed, when a corpse is found under the cake table and Auntie KiKi is accused of putting it there. Can Reagan and Walker find the killer without him finding them first, or will their new address be Bonaventure Cemetery?

Smugglers on the hunt, a police chief on the run, lost loot and a dead wedding planner have the Mackinac Island regulars riding in circles.  After solving two murders, bike shop owner Evie Bloomfield thought life on Mackinac Island would settle into boredom until she finds out Nate Sutter, island police chief and once-upon-a-time under cover cop is on the run. Some badass guys from Nate’s Detroit days think he stole money from them in a champagne smuggling operation and now they’re headed to the island to get their loot. Evie is determined to help Nate because he’s a good cop, Nate is determined to keep interfering Evie and island locals out of harms way, and the crooks are determined to get their money.

To add to the island’s problems there’s a dead guy on the dock and the new wedding planner is more interested in playing bedroom bingo than ordering bridal bouquets.  With the help of Fiona, Evie’s BFF and local newspaper editor, Evie is determined to prove Nate innocent, figure out how champagne smuggling, bodies on the dock and a bad wedding planner are tied together and not wind up taking a long walk off a short pier herself.

My Thoughts

Tandem Demise by Duffy Brown sends us to Mackinac Island where Evie Bloomfield co-owns Rudy’s Bikes.  Evie and her friend, Fiona are down at the pier to pick up a delivery of kites when they find a dead man with a bottle of champagne in his arms.  Nate Sutter, the chief of police, arrives on the scene and seems to recognize the dead guy.  Evie has had success solving the last two murders on the island, and she does not hesitate to begin investigating this one.  Wedding planner, Bladen Powers is causing disruptions because he is more focused on bedroom hopping than the details of his clients’ nuptials.   Evie finds herself sleuthing without her sidekick, Fiona who has become preoccupied with Detroit cop, Finn McCabe.  Finn is worried that an old smuggling case of Nate’s from when he worked undercover in Detroit is coming back to haunt him.  The men involved believe Nate stole their money and they want it back.  Nate has other worries when Bladen is killed, and the murder weapon belongs to Nate.  Someone is framing Nate and Evie has no intention of letting him take the fall.  With the islander’s help, Nate goes into hiding and Evie sets out to prove his innocence.  Can Evie discover who is framing Nate before he is caught and arrested?
Braking for Bodies (A Cycle Path Mystery)                                                                                               Geared for the Grave (A Cycle Path Mystery)
Tandem Demise is a humorous and engaging cozy mystery.  I do not recommend reading Tandem Demise as a standalone.  You do need to read the books in A Cycle Path Mystery series in order (or you will be lost).  Duffy Brown has writing style that I classify as easy breezy.  It is light, has humor, good dialogue and steady pacing.  Evie Bloomfield finds herself co-owning Rudy’s Bikes, but she cannot ride a bike (she has the scabs, scars and bruises to prove it).  Evie, though, is a whiz at coming up with unique designs for the bikes and creating them.  I loved the description of her Nancy Drew bicycle (I want it).  The island is filled with quirky characters and charming shops (lots of fudge shops—yum).  I enjoyed the banter between Evie and Nate.  They are cute together and he is fully aware of her shenanigans.  The mystery was interesting with smuggling, murder, good clues, a handful of suspects and misdirection.  Avid cozy mystery readers, though, will have no problem in identifying the guilty party.  Evie is determined to investigate the case and she is not about to let locks stand in her way.  Thankfully, she has Angelo to teach her the fine art of lock picking.  I had a hard time with Evie breaking into the evidence locker.  This destroys the chain of custody if discovered and a guilty person could get away with the crime (I know it is fiction, but Mackinac Island is not a fantasy world).   Settle into a cozy chair and prepare to laugh as read Tandem Demise.  Duffy Brown fans will enjoy this fetching cozy mystery.

The first two book in A Cycle Path Mystery series are Geared for the Grave and Braking for Bodies. Would you like to win one of Duffy Brown's tote bags?  Duffy has agreed to give away two of the Tandem Demise tote bags.  Become a follower of my page (via email, Twitter, or Google+) and leave a comment with your email address so I can contact you if you win. The contest ends on December 9 at 11:59 p.m.  and is only open to those in the United States. Good Luck!  Visit the other stops on the tour for opportunities to win a tote bag and see what they thought about Tandem Demise (schedule below).  Thank you for visiting today.  I will be featuring The Body in the Attic by Judi Lynn tomorrow.  It is the first novel in The Body in Book series.  I hope you have a splendid day.  Take care and Happy Reading!

Lethal in Old Lace: A Consignment Shop Mystery

Lethal in Old Lace by Duffy Brown is the fifth book in A Consignment Shop Mystery series.  Reagan Summerside is stunned and thrilled when Walker Boone proposes to her.  She barely gets to enjoy the moment when Aunt Kiki disrupts them.  Elsie and Annie Fritz Abbot are lacking mourners at Willie Fishbine’s wake (if you knew him, you would not mourn him either).  The Abbot sisters are professional mourners and need every cent of their income since they lost their savings in a get rich quick scheme.  The next day, Reagan and Aunt Kiki get a visit from Fishbine’s grandson.  He witnessed Aunt Kiki stealing a candy bar from his grandfather’s coffin.  He wants it replaced and for them to find out who killed Mr. Fishbine.  The death was ruled accidental, but the young man has a different theory.  Then BW (Reagan’s dog) finds a body partially buried in the Abbot sister’s vegetable garden.  Bonnie Sue and Willie Fishbine were both residents of Sleepy Pines Retirement Center.  Is someone killing off the residents?  With the Abbot sister’s the primary suspects in one of the crimes, it is up to Reagan and Aunt Kiki to get answers.

A Consignment Shop Mystery series is best read in order.  I am happy that Regan and Boone are engaged.  I just hope Regan gets the wedding she desires (her mother has gone into overdrive).  The book contains good writing and a fast pace.  The characters are established (well developed), and I just love the setting of Savannah.  Duffy Brown provides beautiful descriptions of the area.  There are several characters with various quirky traits like Aunt Kiki.  Boone is a saint to put up with Regan and her family (he is a nice balance to Reagan).  Reagan and Aunt Kiki remind me of Lucy and Ethel in I Love Lucy (screwball comedy).  The mystery will lead readers on a merry chase.  I do wish there had been a little less action.  There needed to be some calm moments in between the frenetic ones.  Lethal in Old Lace was different from Iced Chiffon (first book in the series).  The author seemed to have ramped up the zany antics and quirk factor in Lethal in Old Lace.  My mother laughed continually while reading Lethal in Old Lace (she thought it was hilarious). I loved the reference to Gilmore Girls in the book (my favorite show).  There are various martini recipes included.  Lethal in Old Lace is an entertaining cozy mystery that will have readers in stitches and perplexed over the killers’ identity. My mother read the series last week, and chuckles could be heard emanating from her bedroom.
