Bear a Wee Grudge by Meg Macy: Review & Giveaway!

Bear A Wee Grudge

About Bear A Wee Grudge

Bear a Wee Grudge (A Shamelessly Adorable Teddy Bear Mystery)

Teddy bear shop manager Sasha Silverman must step fast to find a murderer before an upcoming Scottish festival . . .

It’s springtime in Silver Hollow, Michigan, and Sasha is looking forward to the village’s inaugural Highland Fling weekend. Plans are underway for a Kilted 5K, athletic competitions, dancing, live music, and even a Hurl-the-Haggis contest. Meanwhile, Sasha’s staff is busy crafting custom teddy bears in kilts for the Silver Bear Shop’s vendor booth. But trouble’s brewing behind the scenes, as the obnoxious Teddy Hartman, former owner of a rival teddy bear company, sows seeds of discord about town, targeting Sasha’s family and their business.

Things go from plaid to worse when—just a week before the festival kicks-off—the disgruntled gossip is found murdered with an ax buried in his back. Sasha’s dad is arrested, since he’s a champion ax-thrower. But she doesn’t give a dram what it looks like—Sasha knows that despite the old business rivalry with Hartman, her father is innocent. So with a spot of help from her friends, Sasha must bag the real killer before her first Fling also becomes her last.

My Thoughts

Bear a Wee Grudge by Meg Macy is the 5th A Shamelessly Adorable Teddy Bear Mystery series.  It can be read as a standalone if you are new to the series, but I recommend reading this cute series in order.  Sasha Silverman manages the family’s teddy bear shop in Silver Hollow, Michigan.  She is looking forward to the upcoming Highland Fling weekend.  It is a first for their cozy village.  The only bone of contention is the obnoxious Teddy Hartman who is determined to make life difficult for the Silverman’s.  The family is checking out the festival grounds where people are practicing for the highland competitions.  When Sasha’s father, Alex and Gil are hunting for a missing weapon, they find Teddy dead with an axe in his back.  Detective Phil Hunter arrests Alex before forensics is even collected.  Sasha must work quickly if she is to prove her father’s innocence.  I thought Bear a Wee Grudge was well-written with developed characters.  The pacing is a little slower in this story, but the mystery kept me interested.  I like the setting of Silver Hollow.  It is a charming small town with quaint shops and friendly residents.  I love all their festivals and activities.  I enjoy the teddy bear theme and camaraderie at the factory.    The whodunit was a fun one to solve.  There are a number of suspects to consider and clues along the way to help solve the crime.  Sasha actively investigated the murder, and she asks good questions.  There is humor in the story along with plenty of warm moments with family, friends, and Sasha spending time with her kind beau.  Bear a Wee Grudge is a craicing good time with Highland Fling fun, tartan teddy bears, an axed antagonist, an indolent detective, a frustrated family, cruel chatter, a mean Morkie, and a sleuthing Sasha.

Bear a Wee Grudge is available from Amazon,  B&N, Kobo, Google Play, and Apple BooksYou can find the other novels in A Shamelessly Adorable Teddy Bear Mystery series here.

Wedding Bear Blues by Meg Macy: Review and Giveaway!

Wedding Bear Blues

A Teddy Bear Mystery

by Meg Macy

About Wedding Bear Blues

When a heartless killer ruins a Valentine's Day wedding, teddy bear shop manager Sasha Silverman vows to solve the crime . . .

At the Silver Bear Shop and Factory, Sasha will be selling plenty of bride and groom teddy bears come springtime. But this Valentine's Day weekend, she'd take any of those silent, stuffed couples over the real thing. Sasha and her sister Maddie are bridesmaids at Cissy Davidson’s upcoming wedding in Silver Hollow. Cissy is fuming over the worst choice of best man—the jerk who broke her sister Debbie's heart—and the groom-to-be won't budge in his decision. At the rehearsal dinner you could cut the tension with a wedding cake knife.

That is, until best man Dylan is found dead, impaled with an ice pick. Although jilted Debbie is the most likely suspect—the blood on her dress doesn't help her case—the bride begs Sasha to prove her sister's innocence. If anyone's going to walk down the aisle, Sasha will first need to find the cold-hearted killer who iced Dylan . . .

My Thoughts

Wedding Bear Blues by Meg Macy has Sasha Silverman and her sister, Maddie as bridesmaids in their friend, Cissy Davison’s wedding.  It is a busy week leading up to Valentine’s Day for Sasha at the Silver Bear Shop and Factory with everyone searching for the perfect gift for their Valentine.  Sasha also has a tour to give and they are hosting a Chocolate Bear Bar on Sunday for Chocolair, the new chocolate shop in town.  At the rehearsal dinner, Maddie and Sasha enter the ladies’ room to find groomsman, Dylan Campbell dead in one of the stalls.  With Debbie Davison in the hot seat with the police, Cissy begs Sasha to help.  Sasha, of course, cannot resist a mystery.  Wedding Bear Blues is the 4th A Teddy Bear Mystery.  It can be read on its own if you are new to the series.  I thought this charming cozy was well-written with developed characters and adorable teddy bears.  I enjoyed all the cozy elements that make up this entertaining tale:  Sasha’s family, her pets, the community, chocolate, teddy bears, food, and Sasha’s beau.  These elements make for a rich and lively story.  The mystery was appealing.  There is a dead groomsman with multiple suspects.  I am amazed that a group of people did not get together to off this man sooner.  There is a secondary mystery (of sorts) involving mystery men who wish to purchase a certain type of teddy bear.  Sasha is certain they are up to no good.  I enjoyed the humor scattered throughout the story (who doesn’t love a book that makes them laugh).  Wedding Bear Blues is a beartastic cozy with wedding woes, seamingly innocent bear sales, doggie doo doo overload, a beastly bridezilla, a tiny terror, and tasty chocolate teddy bears.

Wedding Bear Blues is available from AmazonB&NKobo, and Google Play.  You can find the other three A Teddy Bear Mysteries hereBearly Departed, the first novel in the series, can be borrowed through Kindle Unlimited.  As part of the tour, Meg Macy is hosting a giveaway.  You can win all four A Teddy Bear Mysteries (sorry, but U.S. Only).  You can click here to enter or use the Rafflecopter form below.  Good Luck!  I had fun with the images today.  I especially liked the big chocolate teddy bear holding the tray (yum).  This was inspired by the Valentine's Day Chocolate Bear Bar event in the book.  Thank you for visiting today.  I will return on Monday with Artistic License to Kill by Paula Darnell.  It is the first A Fine Art Mystery.  I hope that you have a thoughtful day.  Take care, be kind, and Happy Reading!

Bear Witness to Murder: A Shamelessy Adorable Teddy Bear Mystery

Bear Witness to Murder by Meg Macy is the second book in A Shamelessly Adorable Teddy Bear Mystery series.  Sasha Silverman manages her family’s Silver Bear Shop & Factory.  Silver Hollow is kicking off their Octobear Fest with the Cranbeary Tea Party hosted by the Silver Bear Shop at the new Queen Bess Tea Room.  Sasha is surprised that Holly Parker (her old high school nemesis) is attending the event with her shop assistant and publicity guru, Gina Lawson.  Holly has opened Through the Looking Glass which sells Alice in Wonderland themed items along with teddy bears and storybooks.  For the Octobear Fest Bears on Parade event, Maddie is creating an adorable Polka Bear and is assisting her new boyfriend, Kip O’Sullivan with his Hippie Bear.  Kip keeps trying to perfect his creation and he might not get it completed on time (Maddie has her hands full with this one).  Sasha is out walking Rosie early the next morning and stumbles across an individual with a knife sticking out of their back in the alley behind Fresh Grounds.  At first Sasha believes it is Holly because of the jacket.  The victim is later identified as Gina Lawson.  When Mayor Cal Bloom on the suspect list, Judith Silverman wants Sasha to clear his name.  The suspect list is lengthy due to Gina’s attitude and it includes Sasha’s ex-husband, Flynn Hanson.  Can Sasha identify the killer before she becomes the next victim?

I thought Bear Witness to Murder was well-written and engaging.  It has a steady pace and a conversational writing style which made the story easy to read.  While this is the second tale in the series, it can be read alone.  I like the Silverman family, though, I am puzzled by Sasha’s mother, Judith.  I do not understand why she keeps trying to push Sasha and Flynn back together and it was never explained.  Sasha is lucky to have escaped the cheating louse.  She is fortunate to have a supportive father and sister.  I enjoyed the humor provided by Eve and Ross.  There are delightful descriptions of teddy bears (stuffed and resin) in Bear Witness to Murder along with teddy bear related facts.  I thought it was clever to have Oktobear Fest (a great play on words).  Silver Hollow would attract families with their theme.  Silver Hollow is a charming small town with, for the most part, friendly residents and cute shops.  Gossip spreads like wild fire in Silver Hollow which is helpful in gathering information on the suspects.  The mystery was well-crafted and I believe many readers will be surprised by the killer’s identity.  There are several suspects, red herrings, and well placed clues.  While Sasha looks into the murder, she does not let it consume her like some amateur sleuths.  There is some romance sprinkled through the story as Sasha gets to know Jay Kirby.   I found Bear Witness to Murder more enjoyable than Bearly Departed (first book in the series).  My rating for Bear Witness to Murder is 4 out of 5 stars (I liked it).  Join in on the Oktobear Fest festivities in Bear Witness to Murder.

Thank you for visiting today.  I will feature Plain Everyday Heroes by Rachel Good, Laura Hilton and Thomas Nye tomorrow.  I hope you have an enlightening day.  Take care and Happy Reading!

Bearly Departed: A Teddy Bear Mystery

Welcome!  I hope you are enjoying your Saturday on this Memorial Day weekend. Return to Huckleberry Hill by Jennifer Beckstrand will be released on Tuesday, May 30.  It is a delightful addition to The Matchmakers of Huckleberry Hill series.  Anna and Felty Helmuth are such sweet and humorous characters.

Bearly Departed by Meg Macy is the first book in A Teddy Bear Mystery series.  Sasha Silverman is the manager of The Silver Bear Shop and Factory in Silver Hollow, Michigan.  The business was started by Sasha’s grandfather, and she took over the running when her father retired.  Will Taylor, their salesman and public relations expert, is trying to force changes on the business.  He wants to export production overseas to China and oust Uncle Ross who oversees the factory.  Will has just returned early from a trip and immediately called a meeting.  Will states that he has Alex Silverman’s approval to proceed with his plan’s.  Uncle Ross is angry and makes some threats against Will’s life (you can see where there is leading).  Later that evening, Sasha and her sister, Maddie are returning home and are almost hit by a car squealing out of their parking lot.  They notice Will’s car still in the lot and go inside the factory.  Sasha finds Will dead next to the stuffing machine with his mouth full of the material.  Detective Mason is assigned the case.  He insists on closing the factory and store while he investigates.  Uncle Ross quickly becomes the prime suspect in Will’s death.  Sasha knows Uncle Ross did not commit the crime.  She quickly dons her investigator cap and starts looking for other suspects.  Can Sasha find the real killer, clear Uncle Ross and get their shop reopened before it is too late?

I found Bearly Departed to be nicely written, and I liked the premise of a teddy bear shop and factory.  It was interesting to read about the different steps to building a bear and it was cute that the shop had a teddy bear hospital.  Bearly Departed starts out at a good pace and then slows down considerably (especially since we get detailed descriptions of each person Sasha encounters along with their businesses).  I thought there were several cozy mystery clichés in this novel.  The cop is rude and impatient, the person who would be killed was foreseeable, and the killer’s identity was unsurprising. Sasha babbles, stumbles, is forgetful, misplaces things, a gossip, impulsive and seems to take her dog with her everywhere. Since Sasha is the manager of a store, I was hoping for a competent, smart, and confident woman as the main character (it would have been a nice change).  I give Bearly Departed 3 out of 5 stars.  The mystery was slightly complicated, but the identity of the culprit was not.  There is a side plot in the book that acts as a red herring.  Personally, I felt that the author tried to stuff too much into this first book.  There was just one incident after another.  I thought that there were too many characters.  Readers are introduced to the Silverman family, the workers in the factory, owners of the shops on their street, townspeople, etc.  I quickly tired of reading about Rosie’s (Sasha’s dog) bathroom habits.  The author added in Sasha’s ex-husband who is (of course) a cheating louse who ends up returning to town.  Was this really needed?  Information about the case is repeated several times throughout the novel (like filler). I was also curious why when Sasha has a teddy bear picnic (a company event) that they do not use bears from their own shop.  They had bears from other designers (Winnie-the-Pooh and Boyd’s Bears for example) and generic bears present.  Since people are paying to attend the event, it would be better advertising to have their own bears dressed up for the picnic (and then have them for sale).  Bearly Departed was just okay for me.  The premise is unique, but otherwise I was underwhelmed.  If you prefer to read lighter cozy mysteries (that have more of the cozy element), than check out at Bearly Departed

I am off to relax and enjoy my day.  I am currently reading One Fete in the Grave by Vickie Fee.  I hope all of you have a nice, peaceful Saturday.  I will be back on Sunday with my review of Amish Brides by Amy Lillard, Jennifer Beckstrand, and Molly Jebber.  Take care and Happy Reading!
