 Overdue or Die

Overdue or Die (A Haunted Library Mystery) by Allison Brook

About Overdue or Die

Overdue or Die (A Haunted Library Mystery)

Cozy Mystery

7th in Series

Setting - Connecticut

Carrie Singleton has a wedding to plan, a killer to catch, and a conspiracy to uncover in this charming seventh novel of Agatha Award-nominee Allison Brook’s Haunted Library mysteries.

Carrie Singleton has more than her fair share on her plate: her job at the Clover Ridge Library, preparing for her wedding to Dylan Avery, and hoping that the local art gallery doesn’t steal away one of her part-time employees. Her fiancĂ© Dylan accompanies her to the beautiful home of Victor Zalinka—art collector and successful businessman—to select paintings for an art show at the library. While Carrie muses that Victor's home would be the perfect wedding venue, Dylan spots a forgery among the paintings in Victor's collection. Then Martha Mallory is found murdered in her art gallery. With the assistance of Evelyn, the library ghost; the resident cat, Smoky Joe; and the office manager of Dylan’s private investigation company, Carrie comes up with a suspect list long enough to rival the size of an encyclopedia. During her investigation, Carrie stumbles across a terrible truth: Martha’s murder was part of something far bigger and more dangerous than she could have ever imagined. And it all leads back to the art gallery. How far will Carrie go to find the killer and uncover the truth? If the killer finds her first—will Carrie finally be taken out of circulation?

My Thoughts

Overdue or Die by Allison Brook has readers journeying to Clover Ridge, Connecticut where Carrie Singleton is busy scheduling events for the library and making decisions about her wedding.  Carrie is particularly excited about the opening of the new addition at the Clover Ridge Library.  In Overdue or Die we get to follow Carrie as she goes about her day-to-day activities.  Carrie gets her nose out of joint when she learns that her boss and the children’s librarian have planned for an animal circus to be hosted in the new event space (can you imagine the mess).  Carrie is protective of the new event space.    The murder of the local gallery owner has Carrie perplexed.  When a local art collector, Victor becomes the prime suspect, he asks Carrie for her assistance.  There are several suspects along with a red herring or two.  There is an incident or three to keep things interesting.  The case is neatly wrapped up at the end.  Evelyn makes a couple of appearances, but I did not feel she was part of the investigation.   Overdue or Die is the seventh A Haunted Library Mystery.  It can be read as a standalone for those new to the series.  The ending will leave readers smiling.  Overdue or Die is an eventful tale with a celebration crasher, a bludgeoned gallery owner, designer duds, interesting artwork, house hunting, Mick the mobster, and engagement party planning.

Overdue or Die is available from Amazon, B&N, Bookshop.org, Kobo, and Penguin Random House (has links to many sellers).  You can find the other A Haunted Library Mysteries here.  As part of the tour, the author is hosting a giveaway.  Four lucky people will win a paperback or ebook copy of Overdue or Die (US Only).  To enter, click here or use the Rafflecopter form below.  Leave a comment for an extra entry.  Good Luck!  Thank you for joining me today.  I will return on Tuesday, October 17 with my thoughts on The Amish Matchmakers by Beth Wiseman.  This is a story that will make you laugh and smile often.  I hope that you have a relaxing weekend.  Do not forget to enter the giveaway!  Take care and Happy Reading!

Baking Spirits Bright by Sarah Fox

 Baking Spirits Bright

Book Summary

In a cute new culinary cozy from USA Today bestselling author Sarah Fox, budding chocolatier Becca Ransom must solve a murder before she meets a sticky end.

Winter has arrived in Larch Haven, Vermont, bringing with it holiday cheer, lots of snow, and freezing temperatures. Becca Ransom is squeezing in time to skate on the frozen canals and drink hot chocolate by a roaring fire while also whipping up new creations for her family’s chocolate shop and experimenting with holiday flavors like eggnog, gingerbread, and peppermint. At the same time, Becca is preparing for the Baking Spirits Bright holiday baking competition, a popular annual event. She’s planning to enter an edible model of Larch Haven, with a mountain backdrop made of cake, gingerbread cottages, and chocolate gondolas on sugar-glass canals.
Professional bakers and a local food blogger are also participating in the event and they aren’t about to go down without a fight. The competition quickly heats to a boiling point, with flaring tempers and mysterious happenings. When one of the entrants is found dead, stabbed with Becca’s chocolate chipper, Becca tries to salvage the season by finding the killer. But the heat is on, and Becca is in danger of getting burned.

My Thoughts

Baking Spirits Bright by Sarah Fox takes readers back to Larch Haven, Vermont where Becca Ransom is entering the Third Annual Baking Spirits Bright competition.  Larch Haven is a unique town.  It is a cross between a cozy Vermont town and Venice with the canals.  I would love to skate on the canals in the winter and then warm up with a delicious cup of hot chocolate.  Becca is getting the hang of being a chocolatier.  The luscious descriptions had my mouth watering (had me heading to the pantry where I keep my chocolate stash).  Competition brings out the bad side in individuals.  Irma, the perpetually grouchy owner of the local bakery, is found dead before the final round in the competition.

Becca switches her Tam O'Shanter for a deerstalker cap and begins sifting through the clues.  Becca needs to be careful, or she could get burned.  I figured out the mystery before Irma was murdered.  I felt that there needed to be more clues along the way to help lead readers to the guilty party.  I would have loved a twist.  There is some action to spice things up.  The whodunit is neatly wrapped up at the end.  One of my favorite characters is Lolly, Becca’s grandmother.  She is a sweet, warmhearted woman.  There is some romance as well.  It seems that Becca’s old schoolgirl crush might finally reciprocate her feelings.  I could have done with less repetition.  The author captured the chilly climate of Vermont in the winter.  I could feel Jack Frost nipping at my nose.  Baking Spirits Bright is the second book in A True Confections Mysteries.  It can be read as a standalone for those new to the series.  Baking Spirits Bright is a merry mystery with chocolate confections, a butchered baker, a distinctive stranger, taking a tumble, gossip girls, and enlightening notes.

Baking Spirits Bright is available from *.  The first A True Confections Mystery is Six Sweets Under.  You can follow Sarah Fox on Amazon in order to receive an email when she has a new book release.  Thank you for dropping by today.  Tomorrow I am a stop on the Great Escapes Virtual Book Tours for Overdue or Die by Allison Brook.  It is the seventh A Haunted Library Mystery.  I am off to complete the Halloween display in my front yard.  The final piece has finally arrived.  I hope that you have a tranquil day.  Take care and Happy Reading!

Sugar Plum Poisoned by Jenn McKinlay

 Sugar Plum Poisoned

Book Summary

It’s Christmastime, and this holiday season, things are heating up for the bakers at Fairy Tale Cupcakes, in the newest Cupcake Bakery Mystery from New York Times bestselling author Jenn McKinlay.

When up-and-coming singing sensation Shelby Vaughn arrives in town for two weeks of concert dates, she hires her old friend Angie and the rest of the bakery crew to supply cupcakes for the VIP guest lounge every night.

After overhearing Shelby in a heated argument with her manager, Mel is concerned, but she and the crew decide to make the best of their time working with the star. Just as the bakers fall into the rhythm of the job, Shelby’s manager is found dead, clutching a bit of fabric from a Santa suit and a cupcake. With the bakery crew and Shelby’s backup dancers all dressed in similar Santa costumes, it’s impossible to say who is the killer. When all suspicions lead back to Shelby, Mel and Angie stand up for their friend, determined to prove her innocence before she’s frosted for a crime she didn’t commit.
My Thoughts

Sugar Plum Poisoned by Jenn McKinlay takes us to Fairy Tale Cupcakes where Mel, Angie, and the gang are getting ready for the holidays.  I always enjoy my visits with the bakery crew.  A blast from Angie’s past, Shelby Vaughn is in town to perform Christmas concerts and she wants Fairy Tale Cupcakes to provide holiday cupcakes for the VIP guest lounge.  The descriptions of holiday cupcakes will have your mouth watering.  Unfortunately, Shelby has a controlling manager that brings out the mama bear in Angie.  When the manager ends up dead, Shelby ends up a suspect.  Mel and Angie don their sleuthing caps so they can solve the crime before Santa rides into town.  I was able to solve the whodunit early in the book.  I did enjoy following the duo as they asked questions and searched for clues.  I kept hoping, though, that there would be a twist (something unexpected to surprise me).  The crime is wrapped up in time for everyone to have a happy holiday.

Sugar Plum Cupcake

I enjoyed the humor sprinkled throughout the story.  I had no idea that Marty knew how to twerk, and Ray should never be allowed near the Christmas decorations.  Of course, they should have known better to involve Ray.  We only get to see a smidgen of Oz.  I miss him being in the bakery.  There is some repetition (preparing the cupcakes, the VIP lounge each night, details regarding Shelby as well as her former manager and the dead manager’s ex-wife).  Of course, it would not be A Cupcake Bakery Mystery without movie quotes from Mel, Angie, and Tate.  I felt bad for Mel who is going to host Christmas dinner for the family for the first time.  I believe Mel understood by the end of Christmas day why her mother was willing to give up the hosting duties.   Sugar Plum Poisoned is the fifteenth A Cupcake Bakery Mystery.  The author provides enough background information that it can be read as a standalone for those new to the series.  Sugar Plum Poisoned is a sweet treat with a sociable singer, a manipulating manager, killer cupcakes, a swaying Santa, a decoration dilemma, a burgeoning dinner, and Christmas cheer.

Sugar Plum Poisoned is available from Amazon*.  You can find the other A Cupcake Bakery Mysteries here.  The sixteenth A Cupcake Bakery Mystery is Fondant Fumble which will be out on June 4, 2024.  You can find Jenn McKinlay's other novels here.  Thank you for stopping by today.  Tomorrow I am featuring Baking Spirits Bright by Sarah Fox. It is the second book in A True Confections Mysteries.  I am almost done with the Halloween display in my front yard.  I am just waiting for one last item to arrive.  I will share pictures once it is complete.  The cemetery is hopping as everyone joins in for a night of musical entertainment.  I hope that you have a delightful day.  Take care and Happy Reading!

Second Act by Danielle Steel

 Second Act

Book Summary

In this gripping novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Danielle Steel, a top Hollywood executive seeks a new beginning when his career takes an unplanned turn.

As the head of a prestigious movie studio for nearly two decades, Andy Westfield has had every conceivable professional luxury: a stunning office on the forty-fourth floor, a loyal assistant who can all but read his mind, access to a private jet and company cars. The son of Hollywood royalty, Andy always put his career before his marriage, and now, besides his daughter and young grandchildren, it’s the only thing he truly loves.

But then Andy’s world is upended. The studio is sold, and the buyer’s son demands the top seat. Out of a job and humiliated, Andy spirals. When his head clears, he decides to get as far away from Los Angeles as possible until the dust settles and he can find a new way forward.
Andy signs a six-month rental agreement for a luxurious home in a tiny, forgotten coastal town two hours from London. When he arrives, he hires a local woman to help get his affairs in order. A former journalist, Violet Smith is at a crossroads as well, and this temporary job is exactly what she needs to tide her over. But when Violet leaves the manuscript of her unfinished novel behind after work one day, Andy lets his curiosity get the best of him and is captivated by a story that begs to be adapted for the big screen. Could this be the miracle they’ve both been looking for?

In
Second Act, Danielle Steel presents a heartening tale of how challenging times give way to opportunities and an original outline does not always contain the perfect ending.

My Thoughts

Second Act by Danielle Steel provides an escape from reality for a couple of hours.  I found the story to be easy to read.  The characters are developed.  I liked that there were not too many.  I was able to envision the characters from the author’s vivid descriptions.  The glowing depictions also allowed me to visualize the settings including Andy’s California home and the unique house he rents in England.  It is a story about staring over and self-discovery.  Sometimes it takes hitting bottom for someone to realize that family is more important than power or money.  At one time, if a person lost their job and they were in their 50s, it would be challenging for them to get another position.  Now, you can begin a new chapter of your life by going to college or changing career paths.  I could understand Andy struggling after losing his position especially since he did nothing to warrant the loss of it.  The author captured the feelings of humiliation, lack of self-worth, and anger.

While I enjoyed reading Second Act, I was not a fan of the repetition.  I really do not need the same details repeated ten times (Andy not being around for his daughter while she was growing up, how Andy got his position at the studio, Alana was only with Andy to help her career).  The plot twists can be anticipated (such as Andy being fired).  There is mild foul language along with the consumption of copious quantities of alcohol.  I can always count on Danielle Steel to provide a relaxing read (which is what I needed).  Second Act is a touching tale with a surprise termination, a UK hideaway, a pretty assistant, a captivating tale, career change, and a singular romance.

Second Act is available from Amazon*.  Danielle Steel has Upside Down coming out January 2, 2024.  You can find the author's other novels here.  Thank you for dropping by today.  I will be back on Tuesday, October 10 with Sugar Plum Poisoned by Jenn McKinlay.  It is the fifteenth A Cupcake Bakery Mystery. My clumsiness has me injury once again.  I ended up tripping over a rope on one of the inflatables in my front yard.  I ended up spraining my right foot (the big toe swelled to twice its size).  Just as it was beginning to heal, I went down the stairs to outside and tripped over a package on the bottom step (I did not see it).  I will be spending the weekend with my foot propped up (it will give me a chance to catch up on my reading).   I hope that you have a delightful weekend.  Take care and Happy Reading!

On Moonberry Lake by Holly Varni

 On Moonberry Lake

Book Summary

Cora Matthews's life is a mess. A broken engagement and the unexpected death of her mother have left her wondering if things will ever return to normal. Whatever "normal" is.

It certainly isn't what she finds at Moonberry Lake. After she receives her family's dilapidated lakefront lodge as an inheritance--with a surprising condition attached--Cora finds her life overrun by a parade of eccentric neighbors who all have something to say and something to teach her.

As Cora works to put her life back together, she must decide if she is willing to let go of the past, open her heart to love, and embrace the craziest version of family and home she could ever have imagined.
My Thoughts

On Moonberry Lake by Holly Varni has Cora Matthews inheriting her grandparent’s lodge after her mother’s death.  Cora is surprised since she was estranged from her mother at the time of her demise.  The lodge is in serious need of repair.  Cora needs to adjust to living in a small town where everyone knows your business.  On Moonberry Lake is a character driven story.  In the beginning, we are introduced to one character after another (there are so many of them).  The people that live around the lodge are a quirky lot.  I had to laugh at Kitty’s gnome collection because I have a large number in my garden as well.  I was not able to connect with Cora or any of the characters.  I liked the humor sprinkled throughout (Widgy provides many entertaining moments).  I found that the story moved slowly (which made it hard to continue reading).  There are some heartwarming scenes in the latter part of the story.  There were some encounters with the Moonberry Lake residents there were repetitive (Widgy showing up at the crack of dawn each day for example).  The author’s vivid descriptions allowed me to envision Moonberry Lake, the town, and the lodge.      The Christian element is light.  I was surprised by the New Age statements and beliefs.  The romance is clean.  On Moonberry Lake has a feel-good ending.  Would I want to visit Moonberry Lake again?  I would admire the scenery, but I would keep on driving.

On Moonberry Lake is available from Amazon*.  I do suggest you download a sample of On Moonberry Lake so you can check it out for yourself.  Thank you for stopping by today.  I will return tomorrow with Second Act by Danielle Steele.  I hope that you have a joyful day.  Take care and Happy Reading!

Alana tries to tamp her anxiety to try the activities but fails and feels like it pushes James away. Can they each deal with the heaviness in their pasts to embrace a future together?

My Thoughts

Sisters by the Sea contains four novellas written by Wanda E. Brunstetter, Jean Brunstetter, Richelle Brunstetter, and Lorine Brunstetter Van Corbach.  We get to travel to Sarasota, Florida to spend time with Leora Lambright and her sisters, Violet, Francine, and Alana.  I liked that the stories were set in nearby Sarasota.  I was familiar with some of the places mentioned, especially Siesta Key (a beautiful beach).  I liked the characters, but I wish they had been fleshed out more (I know that is hard to do in a short story).  The characters are realistic and relatable.  I thought the authors gave us a realistic look at women who have grown up Amish and are at a crossroads.  They need to decide whether to be baptized or not as well as where they would like to live.  I like that a spotlight is shown on SAD (seasonal affective disorder).  There are good life lessons and encouragement in each tale.  I enjoyed the descriptions of the beaches.  I could envision the beautiful blue ocean and feel warm sand between my toes.  I liked how faith was incorporated into each story and I appreciated that the romances were clean (there was some kissing).   Sisters by the Sea transports you to sunny Sarasota with a seashell cake, a persistent suitor, beautiful beaches, artistic sisters, stunning sunsets, and supportive parents.

Sisters by the Sea is available from Amazon*.  The third book in the Friendship Letters series, Letters of Wisdom will be out March 1, 2024.  Wanda Brunstetter's Amish Friends Life Hacks is available for preorder.  You can find Wanda Brunstetter's other novels here.  Thank you for joining me today.  Tomorrow I am featuring On Moonberry Lake by Holly Varni.  Has fall arrived in your area?  Our temperatures have been in the high 80s during the day and low 70s at night.  There has been too much wind (my Halloween decorations are taking a beating).  I am longing for cool weather.  I hope that you have a relaxing day.  Take care and Happy Reading!

Lost and Found by Suzanne Woods Fisher

 Lost and Found
Book Summary

Trudy Yoder shares a passion for birding with Micah Weaver--and she has an even greater passion for Micah. Their friendship is finally turning romantic when Micah abruptly grows cold. Worse still, he wants to leave Stoney Ridge.

Micah Weaver thought he was over Trudy's older sister. A year and a half ago, Shelley had broken his heart when she ran away from Stoney Ridge to pursue a singing career in Nashville. Then, out of the blue, she's started to leave distressing phone messages for him.
When the bishop asks for volunteers to scout out a possible church relocation in Tennessee, Micah is the first to raise his hand. Despite scant details, he's confident he can find Shelley. After all, his reputation as a field guide is based on finding birds that don't want to be found.

What Micah doesn't know is that what you're looking for isn't always what you find.
My Thoughts

Lost and Found by Suzanne Woods Fisher takes us back to Stoney Ridge, Pennsylvania.  I always enjoy returning to Stoney Ridge to catch up with the characters.  I feel bad for Bishop David Stoltzfus who needs to come up with a solution for the community.  Families are leaving left and right.  They do not want their children to be influenced by the Beachy Amish who are more progressive than their Old Order Amish community.  Just when Micah Weaver is finally taking notice of Trudy Yoder, he becomes distant.  Poor Trudy has no idea what is going on with Micah.  The characters are developed with each one having a unique personality.  Hank manages to keep up on the latest gossip and makes sure others in the community are up on the latest events.  I do not know how his wife puts up with the volume of his voice (you would think he had hearing troubles from the way he shouts, but his hearing is excellent much to the bishop’s dismay).

Birding is featured throughout the story.  It is an unusual theme for an Amish story.  I can tell the author did her research on birding (it is educational).  I enjoyed Trudy’s bird watching entries at the end of each chapter which include Biblical references.  I did not know there were so many bird references in the Bible.  I like how the bird is compared to an individual in the story.  There is someone new in the Stoney Ridge permit office (there is a reason she was sent to work alone in this one-person office).  She is quite a character, and it turns out that she is a bird watcher as well.  In Lost and Found, we see that you never know who might be suffering from a mental illness.  When a family member has a mental illness, it affects the whole family.  Lost and Found can be read as a standalone for those new to the series.  I have enjoyed every story set in Stoney Ridge.  It has allowed me to get to know the characters and the setting.  I loved the humor sprinkled throughout the story.  You can always count on Hank for entertainment.  Lost and Found is a special story with families taking leave, mystifying messages, a land dilemma, romance miseries, a special fowl sighting, trip troubles, and happy people.

Lost and Found is available from Amazon*.  A Season on the Wind is the first book in the Stoney Ridge birdwatching series.  You can find Suzanne Woods Fisher's other novels here.  Thank you for joining me today.  I am heading outside to continue working on my Halloween display.  I have to get the lights up next.  Then, I will move on to the side yard display (it faces a side street).  Are you decorating for Halloween? I will return on Tuesday, October 3 with Sisters by the Sea by Wanda E. Brunstetter, Jean Brunstetter, Jean Brunstetter, and Lorine Brunstetter Van Corbach.  I hope that you have a fun weekend.  Take care and Happy Reading!
