My Thoughts

Sisters by the Sea contains four novellas written by Wanda E. Brunstetter, Jean Brunstetter, Richelle Brunstetter, and Lorine Brunstetter Van Corbach.  We get to travel to Sarasota, Florida to spend time with Leora Lambright and her sisters, Violet, Francine, and Alana.  I liked that the stories were set in nearby Sarasota.  I was familiar with some of the places mentioned, especially Siesta Key (a beautiful beach).  I liked the characters, but I wish they had been fleshed out more (I know that is hard to do in a short story).  The characters are realistic and relatable.  I thought the authors gave us a realistic look at women who have grown up Amish and are at a crossroads.  They need to decide whether to be baptized or not as well as where they would like to live.  I like that a spotlight is shown on SAD (seasonal affective disorder).  There are good life lessons and encouragement in each tale.  I enjoyed the descriptions of the beaches.  I could envision the beautiful blue ocean and feel warm sand between my toes.  I liked how faith was incorporated into each story and I appreciated that the romances were clean (there was some kissing).   Sisters by the Sea transports you to sunny Sarasota with a seashell cake, a persistent suitor, beautiful beaches, artistic sisters, stunning sunsets, and supportive parents.

My Thoughts

Return to the Big Valley contains three Amish tales by Wanda E. Brunstetter, Jean Brunstetter, and Richelle Brunstetter.  The stories are Wilma’s Wish, Martha’s Miracle, and Alma’s Acceptance.  We are taken back to Big Valley, Pennsylvania which we visited in The Brides of Big Valley.  Each story can be read as a standalone.  I thought the stories were well-written with good life lessons.  There is good dialogue and pacing as well.  Each story gives us a different look at Amish life.  They are heartwarming and realistic stories.  I could understand Wilma’s hesitancy at suddenly becoming a mother to five mischievous boys who were making life difficult.  It was definitely a situation where a person needed to step back and re-evaluate the situation.  Martha Yoder is a unique Amish woman.  She prefers to be outdoors, and Martha enjoys hunting and fishing.  It is hard to find an Amish man who will accept her (who does not want her to change).  I liked that we get to see an Amish woman in a non-traditional role.  Alma becomes a widow after a year of marriage.  Her friend suggests she visit her in Big Valley where she reunites with an old friend and someone she had developed feelings for as a teen.  She wonders if it is too soon to find love again.  I enjoyed all three tales that deal with grief, caring parents, romantic tension, relationship obstacles, love, and humor. We get to enjoy everyday life in the community. I appreciated the epilogues that nicely wrapped up each novella. There is a recipe after each story.  Return to the Big Valley has three sweet Amish tales that are a relaxing way to spend an afternoon.

Book Summary

The Blended Quilt by Wanda E. Brunstetter and Jean Brunstetter has Sadie Kuhns deciding to create a unique quilt that combines an Amish pattern and a traditional Hawaiian pattern.  She wants a quilt to remind her of the special trip she made to the Hawaiian Islands with her friends over four years ago.  Sadie his being courted by Wyman Kaufman and would love to marry him someday.  She is worried, though, about his ability to provide for a wife and family because he cannot settle at a job.  Wyman gets bored easily and switches jobs frequently.  When Sadie finished the blended quilt hanging, her friend Ellen suggests that she write a book. Sadie is intrigued by the idea, but the cost of self-publishing the book is out of her reach at this time.  Then Sadie receives unexpected news that changes her life and those close to her.  What does the future hold for Sadie?

My Thoughts

The Blended Quilt by Wanda E. Brunstetter and Jean Brunstetter is a lovely story.  It is a continues the story of the four girls who took a cruise to the Hawaiian Island four and a half years ago in The Hawaiian Quilt.  The Hawaiian Discovery is the sequel to The Hawaiian Quilt and it tells Ellen’s story.  While The Blended Quilt could be read as a standalone, I believe it is best to read the books in order.  It will allow you to have a better understanding of the characters and their situations.  I thought this was a unique Amish book with our main character having an unusual occupation.  Sadie Kuhns is the only one of the four friends who is still unmarried.  She would love to marry beau, Wyman Kaufman, but he cannot seem to settle into a permanent job.  Wyman gets bored with a job, quits, and then moves onto another one.  Sadie worries that Wyman could not provide a steady life for a wife and family.  Sadie is a gifted quilter who sometimes creates her own patterns.  She decides to commemorate her trip to Hawaii with a quilted wall hanging that blends Amish and Hawaiian patterns.  The quilt sounded lovely when finished and unique.  This quilt leads to the suggestion that Sadie write a book.  I thought Sadie and Wyman were developed characters.  I liked Sadie who is a sweet, compassionate woman.  I was not fond of Wyman was immature and selfish.  I kept hoping that a new love interest would appear for Sadie.  I liked that we got updates on Mandy, Barbara, and Ellen.  We get to spend time with Mandy and Ken in Kauai as they suffer life’s ups and downs.  The point-of-view alternates between Sadie, Wyman, and several other characters.  I like getting a female and male perspective on situations. We get to see the characters face a series of challenges.  Life is not smooth sailing even in fiction.  I did wonder, though, why the author chose not to have the bishop or elders help the characters in their time of need.  It would have added another touch of realism to the story.  There were times when the Kuhnses and Kaufman families could have used some expert guidance and advice.  I did feel the ending was a little rushed.  I felt the changes were too sudden.  I appreciated the epilogue that nicely wrapped up this sweet story.  I enjoyed reading The Blended Quilt. It provided me with a lovely break from reality which I desperately needed.  The Blended Quilt is a heartwarming Amish tale with quaint quilts, ennui employment, an astonishing abundance, faithful friends, a bored beau, and an unforeseen opportunity.

Book Summary

Twice as Nice Amish Romance Collection by Wanda E. Brunstetter and Jean Brunstetter contains The Lopsided Christmas Cake and The Farmers’ Market Mishap. 

                                                         

The Lopsided Christmas Cake has Elma and Thelma Hochstetler inheriting their grandparent’s home and store in Topeka, Indiana.  The twins arrive to find the home in a deteriorated condition.  The house is going to need a lot of work to bring it up to snuff plus they have a mice problem.  While shopping in Shipshewana, Thelma notices a flyer for a cooking show.  Each item will be demonstrated, and the final product auctioned off to benefit the community medical fund.  Thelma, without Elma’s knowledge, enters them to make their grandmother’s Christmas cake.  They will have to use the wood stove which neither of the ladies are used to using. 

Thelma meets Joseph Beechy who owns a harness shop is LaGrange while Thelma runs into Delbert Gingerich a woodworker. Elma, Delbert, Thelma, and Joseph see each other again at the cooking demonstration and auction.  Joseph has Delbert bid on the twins’ cake which turned out a little lopsided.  The four of them start spending a lot of time together getting to know each other.  It would be perfect if each girl found the right man at the same time.  Will it be happily ever after for the four of them? 

The Farmers’ Market Mishap is the sequel to The Lopsided Christmas Cake.  Elma Hochstetler is thirty-four years old and has been living alone since her twin sister, Thelma married Joseph Beechy.  Elma has a busy life with taking care of their general store, home, garden, and chores in the barn.  But it does get lonely and Elma wonders if she will end up an old maid.  Thelma is worried about her sister and keeps pushing her towards Delbert Gingerich.  Delbert and Elma used to court, but they were not suited.  Thelma hopes that her sister will change her mind.  Thelma and Joseph are excited about their first child.  It means, though, that Thelma cannot work as many hours in the store, and Elma must take on more responsibility.  Ben Wagler lives in Grabill with his widowed mother, Dorothy.  Dorothy has taken a booth at the Shipshewana farmer’s market to sell some of her excess produce and her lovely flowers.  Ben decides to look around before the market opens and encounters Elma at her stand where he proceeds to knock over some of her produce.  Elma and Ben are attracted to each other, but they live about fifty miles apart.  Elma tried a long-distance relationship in the past and it did not work out.  Plus, she has responsibilities and would never consider moving away from her sister especially now that she is becoming an aunt.  Is there a chance for a happily ever after for Ben and Elma? 

My Thoughts

Twice as Nice Amish Romance Collection contains two light-hearted Amish romances that I enjoyed reading.  Both tales are well-written and have engaging characters.  The Lopsided Christmas Cake is such a cute story.   I liked Thelma who is outgoing, friendly, and full of life.  Elma was a little harder to like, but she does grow on you.  The writing style made this charming tale a breeze to read. The Farmers’ Market Mishap has a good pace, it is just the right length, and it has a satisfying ending.  I especially liked the addition of Hunter/Freckles.  He is a smart and loving dog that accomplishes what the humans could not.  Each story can be read as a standalone, both I heartily recommend both of these charming Amish stories.  This collection of books is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.  Twice as Nice Amish Romance Collection will leave you smiling.

Amish Front Porch Stories by Wanda E. Brunstetter, Jean Brunstetter & Richelle Brunstetter

Happy Sunday!  Abraham by Jennifer Beckstrand*  comes out on November 26 along with An Amish Wedding Feast on Ice Mountain by Kelly Long.  The Amish Wedding Promise by Laura V. Hilton releases on December 17.  If you are looking for something steamier, check out A Witch for Mr. Holiday by Deanna Chase.  It is first book in Witches of Christmas Grove series.  

Amish Front Porch Stories by Wanda E. Brunstetter, Jean Brunstetter & Richelle Brunstetter contains eighteen short tales of simple faith and wisdom.  These short stories take us to Amish country where each woman is going through a struggle. I like that each story teaches us a life lesson.  Simple Actions takes us to Berlin, Ohio where Anna Hostettler lives next to Lucy who is a chronic complainer. What is the best way to handle Lucy?  Cardinal at the Window in Seymour, Missouri has Esther Stutzman struggling with depression while being overwhelmed with raising her seven children.  How can Esther find joy once again?  Nina’s Struggle has Nina Miller uncovering the truth about her father.  I enjoyed each of these uplifting stories.  We get to see these Amish women have problems just like us.  Just because they choose to live differently, does not mean they do not have struggles.  Depression, loneliness, pride, feeling awkward, lacking confidence are problems all of us face.  These stories allow us to learn a new way to overcome these various issues.  There is a scripture that go along with each story.  I found myself writing down many of them to contemplate later.  I feel that Amish Front Porch Stories would make a lovely gift especially to an individual who has trouble overcoming depression.  Finding joy in a humdrum life can be hard, but there were some great tips provided.  You can read one, two or all eighteen of the short tales in Amish Front Porch Stories.  I enjoyed these well-written, heartwarming tales.  This is one of those books that I will be find myself visiting often.

The Brides of the Big Valley by Wanda E. Brunstetter

Greetings!  It is the first day of June.  There are some wonderful new books coming out this month.  They include The Book Supremacy by Kate Carlisle, The Right Sort of Man by Allison Montclair, The Farmer's Bride by Kathleen Fuller, A Crafter Hooks a Killer by Holly Quinn, Bite Club by Laurien Berenson, Love of the Witch by Deanna Chase and Down in Flames by Cheryl Hollon.  

The Brides of the Big Valley by Wanda E. Brunstetter, Richelle Brunstetter and Jean Brunstetter contains three Amish romance stories set in an area called The Big Valley in Pennsylvania.  Three different Amish communities live here, and they are distinguished by the color of their buggy tops:  yellow, white and black.  Deanna’s Determination by Wanda E. Brunstetter has widow Deanna Speicher getting engaged to Elmer Yoder.  Her son, Abner has Down’s syndrome and he adores Elmer.  But then a tragic accident threatens to take away their future.  Rose Mary’s Resolve by Jean Brunstetter features Rose Mary Renno who has just begun working at her father’s furniture shop, Renno’s Furniture Shop.  Rose Mary has been dating Tom Yoder who is encouraging her to jump the fence, which is not in Rose Mary’s future, so she breaks up with him.  But then someone unexpected enters her life and Rose Mary is torn.  What path will Rose Mary take?  Leila’s Longing by Richelle Brunstetter has the artistic, Leila Fisher managing the card shop and the house as her mother’s pregnancy advances in the yellow top community.  Leila is an introvert who has difficulty communicating with people and making friends.  She meets Aden Troyer at a singing in the black top community and they begin courting.  Then a tragedy occurs that could derail their plans for their future. 

 

The Brides of the Big Valley contains three charming Amish stories.  I thought the stories were well-written with steady pacing.  I like that there is a common thread throughout the three books.  All three feature the same community and the Renno family.  We also get updates on Elmer and Deanna in Rose Mary’s Resolve and Leila’s Longing.  Wanda has an engaging writing style.  I immediately became absorbed in Deanna’s Determination.  Jean and Richelle are accomplished writers who provided enriching novellas.  I thought the various characters in The Brides of the Big Valley were realistic and it was interesting to learn about the three diverse Amish communities.  They are all Amish and in the same valley, but they have various differences (not just the color of their buggy tops).  My favorite was Deanna’s Determination.  It is a story that touched my heart and I found myself rooting for Deanna and Elmer. I really liked the cardmaking in Leila’s Determination and the fact they had a shop selling the handmade cards plus cardmaking supplies.  The phrase I wanted to share with you comes from Leila’s Longing and is “His presence provides us with contentment” (that makes me feel loved and peaceful).  All three authors provided inspiring and enticing tales.  There is a recipe included from each story.  The Brides of the Big Valley are heartwarming stories about love, family, and faith.

The Hawaiian Discovery: The Hawaiian Series

Happy June 1.  A couple of new books out today include Mulberry Lane Babies by Rosie Clarke, The Foyles Bookshop Girls by Elaine Roberts, and Confound It by Maggie Toussaint.

The Hawaiian Discovery by Wanda E. Brunstetter and Jean Brunstetter is the sequel to The Hawaiian Quilt.  Ellen Lambright is back home in Middlebury, Indiana working at Mandy and Ken Williams bed and breakfast.  One day Mandy and Ken receive a call that his father his ill and they quickly fly to Hawaii.  When Ken’s father passes away, they are needed to stay on in Hawaii to assist his mother with the farm and they must sell their bed and breakfast. While looking for a new job, Ellen works at her father’s shoe store with Ezra Bontrager.  Ezra wishes to go out with Ellen, but he is fearful of rejection.  A few months later, Ken is in a horrible accident, and Ellen quickly flies to Hawaii to be with Mandy.  Ellen assists the Williams employee, Rob Smith with their organic chicken farm.  As Ellen spends more time with Rob, she can feel herself falling in love with him.  However, Ellen has been baptized into the Amish church and would not hurt her family by leaving.  Is there a possibility of a future between Rob and Ellen?  Rejoin Ellen and Mandy in The Hawaiian Discovery.

I thought The Hawaiian Discovery was well-written and had a steady pace.  I do recommend reading The Hawaiian Quilt before you begin The Hawaiian Discovery.  The characters are nicely developed with the realistic foibles.  We get beautiful descriptions of Middlebury and Hawaii.  The plants and sights in Hawaii sounded amazing along with the pleasing weather.  I cannot imagine working or running a chicken farm.  The smells described had me wrinkling my nose in distaste, and I could imagine the noise caused by so many birds (my neighbors have some chickens and they are a noisy flock).  It was nice to revisit Mandy, Ellen and the other ladies.  The Christian elements are masterfully woven into the story.  Forgiveness from others and of oneself being the biggest theme in The Hawaiian Discovery.  Guilt from an event can weigh a person down and change the course of their life.  Forgiveness is a healing balm.  In The Hawaiian Discovery, we see the importance of family, friendship, loyalty, faith, prayer and patience.  The Hawaiian Discovery is a special story that will linger with you and the ending will leave you with a smile on your face. The Hawaiian Discovery will be released on June 5 (the release date changed from June 1).

Brunstetter and Jean Brunstetter is the sequel to The Lopsided Christmas Cake.  Elma Hochstetler is thirty-four years old and has been living alone since her twin sister, Thelma married Joseph Beechy.  Elma has a busy life with taking care of their general store, home, garden and chores in the barn.  But it does get lonely and Elma wonders if she will end up an old maid.  Thelma is worried about her sister and keeps pushing her towards Delbert Gingerich.  Delbert and Elma used to court, but they were not suited (Elma found him set in his ways and disliked his various quirks).  Thelma hopes that her sister will change her mind (she wants her to stay close by).  Thelma and Joseph are excited about their first child.  It means, though, that Thelma cannot work as many hours in the store, and Elma must take on more responsibility.  Ben Wagler lives in Grabill with his widowed mother, Dorothy.  Dorothy has taken a booth at the Shipshewana farmer’s market to sell some of her excess produce and her lovely flowers.  Ben decides to look around before the market opens and encounters Elma at her stand where he proceeds to knock over some of her produce.  Elma and Ben are attracted to each other, but they live about fifty miles apart.  Elma tried a long-distance relationship in the past and it did not work out.  Plus, she has responsibilities and would never consider moving away from her sister especially now that she is becoming an aunt.  Is there a chance for a happily ever after for Ben and Elma?

The Farmers’ Market Mishap is a light-hearted Amish romance that I enjoyed reading.  It is well-written and has engaging characters.  The Farmers’ Market Mishap has a good pace, it is just the right length, and it has a satisfying ending.  I especially liked the addition of Hunter/Freckles.  He is a smart and loving dog that accomplishes what the humans could not. The Farmers’ Market Mishap is a sequel to The Lopsided Christmas Cake, but it can be read alone. I give The Farmers’ Market Mishap 4 out of 5 stars.  The story has an expected ending, but I was still pleased with the story.  The Farmers’ Market Mishap is the perfect book to read on a hot afternoon.  You can get an extended preview of The Farmers' Market Mishap for free (Amazon and Barnes and Noble).
