My Thoughts

The Christmas Spirit by Debbie Macomber is a heartwarming Christmas story.  I like the way this story was told.  A grandmother is telling two of her grandchildren a story.  The tale she tells takes place in 1977.  There are chapters in the present with the grandmother and the kids plus the chapters in the past.  This is a cute story.  I liked the characters.  Hank and Pete are the main characters.  They have been friends since elementary school.  They are having lunch and each one is complaining about their job.  It is a busy time for both of them with Christmas only a week away.  One of them proposes they switch jobs for the week.  Pete, a pastor, will run Hank’s bar while Hank will handle Pete’s pastoral duties.  Hank will have the added task of dealing with Pete’s sister and church secretary, Grace Ann who is not Hank’s biggest fan.  It is an enlightening experiment for both men.  

Snowball Cookies

There is plenty of humor.  I laughed often while reading The Christmas Spirit.  There is a scene with Pete, a biker gang, and darts that tickled my funny bone.  There is romance for Pete and Hank as well.  Miracles do happen during the holidays.  I like Debbie Macomber’s writing style.  It is conversational and friendly.  I felt like grandma was telling me a story.  I just loved the ending.  This is one book that you will want to read straight through (make sure you have your hot cocoa and cookies nearby).  The Christmas Spirit is a cheerful Christmas tale with a job swap, scrumptious snowballs, a dripping roof, a mulish mule, a biker challenge, a striking server, straightlaced secretary, a dour donor, and party planning.

My Thoughts

Flora's Travelling Christmas Shop by Rebecca Raisin is a story full of Christmas spirit.  Flora loves everything about Christmas.  She has Christmas clothing, purses, shoes, and pajamas (I want the jammies).  When Flora is at her lowest, her best friend brainstorms with her to come up with the perfect job.  It also solves Flora’s living situation.  She suggests Flora have a travelling Christmas shop.  Before you can say jingle bells, Flora is off to Sweden to buy a camper van.  She then heads to Lapland to pick up her stock and join the Christmas market.  Flora’s new life gets off to a bumpy start.  The one person Flora hoped to never see again happens to be in charge of the Christmas market.  Will Flora’s story have a happy ending like the holiday Hallmark movies that she loves?

Flora has an over-the-top personality.  She says what she thinks, dresses creatively, has a tendency to find herself in awkward situations, and she is very focused on Christmas.  Flora is kind, compassionate, amusing, spirited, and totally unpredictable.  There is humor all throughout the story.  I am just amazed at the situations Flora gets herself into.  The story is chockfull of all things Christmas related.  Christmas trees, ornaments, hot cocoa, wreaths, snow, and so much more.  Connor (aka the Viking God) is the exact opposite of Flora.  He is a by the rules type of person.  He is ecofriendly (a little over-the-top about it) and lacking in the humor department.  Connor and Flora clash from the moment they meet (they have a humorous meet cute).  I loved the descriptions of Lapland.  I could understand why Flora was in awe the first time she witnesses the aurora borealis.  It was interesting learning about the camper van shop community.  I did feel that some of the repetition could have been eliminated along with the long phone calls between Flora and her bestie, Livvie (they went on for pages).  There is mild foul language in the book.  If you like to watch romantic comedies, then you will enjoy Flora’s Travelling Christmas Shop.  Flora’s Travelling Christmas Shop is a charming Christmas tale with work woes, seasonal nightclothes, Reindeer name requests, a giant gingerbread house, a hot spot in the sauna, and a cheerful Christmas.

My Thoughts

A Quilt for Christmas by Melody Carlson is a charming Christmas novella.  I started reading A Quilt for Christmas, and I did not want to put the book down.  The story has friendly, relatable characters.  I like Melody Carlson’s writing style.  It is engaging and draws the reader into the story.  I really liked the theme of the book.  The various strangers came together to help someone in need.  A little girl wants a special Christmas quilt for her mother.  The various characters work together to create Christmas magic.  They make a difference in a family’s life and in each of their own lives.  The Christmas spirit is at work in this sweet story.  A Quilt for Christmas is about forgiveness, helping others, love, and Christmas.  It is a simple but heartwarming novella.  I look forward to reading Melody Carlson’s latest Christmas book each year.  This Christmas novella is one of my favorites by this author (in the top three).  It is a story that makes you feel good and put you in the mood for Christmas (with plans to help a few neighbors).  A Quilt for Christmas is an uplifting tale with an unwell neighbor, a daughter’s request, an effective flyer, conflicting characters, a rewarding romance, a gratifying gift, and the Christmas spirit.  

Excerpt

“Can you make a quilt for Mama?” Fiona asked eagerly.

“I—uh—I don’t know.”

“She wants one so bad.” Fiona’s eyes brightened with hope. “I can help you make it. We’ll make a quilt for Mama to make her better.”

Vera didn’t know what to say but hoping to distract Fiona from thoughts of death and sickness, she slowly nodded. “I might be able to quilt your mother something.” She imagined a small project . . . something that would distract her from feeling sorry for herself during the holidays. “Maybe a pillow. Or even a small lap quilt.” She held her hands a couple of feet apart. “You know, like this.”

“No, Mama needs a big patchwork quilt,” Fiona insisted. “For her big bed. Can you do it, Mrs. Swanson? Please—please! Mama would be so happy. I promise to help.”

Vera didn’t know what to say.

“And we will give it to her for Christmas,” the precocious child continued.

My Thoughts

Kill Them with Canvas by Bailee Abbott is the second A Paint by Murder Mystery.  We travel to Whisper Cove, New York where siblings, Chloe and Izzie Abbington own Paint with a View.  The story is easy to read.  I enjoyed the descriptions of the town and its shops.  It is nearing Halloween and the town goes all out to decorate.  They also have a haunted legend (the Lady of Chautauqua Lake).  The sisters seem more confident in this book.  Their business is doing well, and they did successfully solve one investigation.  I do wish that Chloe’s name had been mentioned earlier in the book (makes it easier for new readers).  Her name is not mentioned until I was a tenth of the way into the book (around the 11% mark).  The mystery has Chloe and Izzie’s aunt, Constance at the top of the suspect list.  She was heard arguing with the victim, Viola Finnwinkle at the painting event.  There is some physical evidence as well.  It does not help that Constance will not provide a proper timeline for the police.  Chloe and Izzie agree to help their aunt when she requests their assistance.  There are a limited number of suspects plus a red herring or two.  I liked how the author had me doubting who I thought was the killer.  Kill Them with Canvas can be read as a standalone, but it will take you just a bit to catch up.  Kill Them with Canvas is a colorful cozy with a painting party, a local legend, a collapsing Constance, a minty menace, costumed canines, evident evidence, and a fingered ferryman.

About the Author

I was born in Los Angeles, lived in Connecticut for a few years, and finally moved to Texas. After living in the Dallas area most of my adult life, my husband retired, and we relocated 80 miles northwest of Austin. Now that we’ve enjoyed small-town life for a dozen years, we can’t imagine living anywhere else. Our adult children are close enough to visit, our yard is often filled with white-tailed deer, neighbors' wave when they drive by, and everyone knows our dogs.

I received my associate's degree directly after high school but didn’t finish my college work until I was a single mom in my 30s. I earned both my BA and MA degrees in English from the University of Texas at Arlington. Though I had always been an avid reader, it was while pursuing those degrees that I discovered a love of language and began pursuing publication. While teaching at the middle school, high school, and collegiate levels, I began to write part time. I published over 100 articles in Christian family magazines and received over two dozen awards from Romance Writers of America chapter groups before I published my first novel in 2010. I’m now represented by Steve Laube of the Steve Laube Agency, and in 2020 I published my 33rd novel.

My Thoughts

An Amish Proposal for Christmas by Vannetta Chapman is a sweet story.  I thought the story was well-written with steady pacing.  I liked the characters in the story.  I enjoyed getting to know Becca, Gideon, Amos, and the other four Yoder sisters.  Becca’s sisters are quite a bunch.  I am looking forward to Eunice’s story (she is a unique Amish woman).  I loved the descriptions of the Shipshewana Outdoor Market ran by Becca’s father, Amos.  It sounds like a great place to shop especially at Christmastime.  I like that Gideon and Becca became friends before a romance developed between them.  There are good life lessons in the story.  It is important to pray about a decision before making it.  Being homesick is not just for children.  It can happen to anyone at any age.  

One of my favorite lines from An Amish Proposal for Christmas is from Nathan, “Give love when you can, respect when you should, and always—always—put first things first.”  Love, respect, and priorities is what Nathan means. I enjoyed learning a little about the Mennonite Disaster Services (MDS).   An Amish Proposal for Christmas is the first book in the Indiana Amish Market series.  I am looking forward to the next installment which features Becca’s sister, Bethany (she loves to knit).  An Amish Proposal for Christmas is an uplifting tale with bouncy buggy races, an amazing Amish market, scrumptious pretzels, travel zeal, singular sisters, and a charming Christmas market.

My Thoughts

The High Notes by Danielle Steel is about Iris Cooper who was gifted with a magical voice.  Her father decided to cash in on his daughter’s talent.  Iris was twelve when her father got her a job in a local bar.  He kept them moving all through Iris’s childhood with her spending her evenings and weekends singing for their supper.  When Iris was seventeen, father dearest signed her up with a slimy promotor to tour for five years.  It was a grueling five years.  Unable to find work after the tours, Iris signed up with a different promoter for another five years.  This man liked to surprise his singers at concerts and degrade them.  When the slime ball slapped a singer, Iris had enough.  Iris changed the color of her and disappeared.  She was fortunate to encounter a good band in Jackson’s Hole, Wyoming.   Boy, a member of the band, and Iris became friends.  When the band breaks up, Iris and Boy head to New York.  Iris had been given the phone number of an agent who could make her a star.  Clay signs Iris and Boy.  Their careers are soon on the rise.  A tragic event has Iris making a few changes to her life.  

The High Notes is what I call a rags-to-riches story.  I like Danielle Steel’s writing style.  It is casual and friendly.  The story moved along at a steady pace.  I liked Iris Cooper.  She had a terrible childhood, but it never affected her outlook.  Iris is a kind person with a magnificent voice.  Iris had a rough road to hoe, and she deserved something good to happen to her.  There was plenty going on this book.  I found myself quickly drawn into the story.  It is a book that can be finished in a couple of hours.  It is the perfect book to read before a cozy fire or while lounging on the beach.  I just loved the description of Rosebud.  She is a cutie.  There is some foul language as well as some graphic violence.  Key backstory details are repeated frequently.  The High Notes has hope, disappointment, perseverance, friendship, and love.  The High Notes is a touching tale with barroom ballads, truck tunes, taxing tours, punishing promoters, a big break, a moving melody, and a special surprise.
