Personal chef and caterer Allie Catt combines her love of fiction with her love of food in the scenic North Carolina mountains—but amid her latest themed event, based on Dickens’s beloved classic, A Christmas Carol, a rare-book expert’s goose is cooked…

In the charming town of Bramblewood, not far from Asheville, Allie’s preparing for a special seasonal soiree: a literary-themed dinner party that’s a tribute to Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol. It’ll take place at the Amber Lantern, the quaint inn recently opened by her best friend’s mother, Noeline—and the holiday spirit has even led a Scroogelike local businessman to lend his prized first edition of the nineteenth-century novella for the event.

With the voices of carolers ringing in the air and the community theater staging a special performance, it looks like it will be a happy Christmas—until the priceless book disappears and someone murders the expert who authenticated it. And if the police have their way, Allie’s lawyer friend Freddy will be dragged away in chains like Marley’s ghost…

The crime has also cast a shadow over Noeline’s fledgling business, so Allie feels doubly obliged to find the real killer among the gathered guests and local visitors—and put an end to this nightmare. It’s time to investigate them all, every one . . .

My Thoughts

Deck the halls, gather the suspects, and prepare for a delightfully Dickensian mystery! In A Classic Case of Murder by Daryl Wood Gerber, Allie Catt is ready to cry “Bah, humbug!” when a man is murdered during her Charles Dickens–themed A Christmas Carol literary dinner. Light, festive, and character-driven, the story weaves its literary theme throughout, with passages from A Christmas Carol opening each chapter and references to Dickens’s life and works adding fascinating historical tidbits. The mystery offers a merry surplus of suspects—excuse me, guests—and everyone seems to have a motive, leaving them quick to point fingers. Allie and her friend Tegan must work quickly to solve the crime before it sinks the Amber Lantern.

With a sizable cast, the character list at the beginning is especially helpful, while the delectable treats Allie bakes for her clients are sure to make mouths water. As the third installment in the Literary Dining Mysteries, the book can be enjoyed as a standalone, though reading the series in order provides a richer introduction to the characters, town, and featured literary classics. Brimming with holiday charm, tempting culinary delights, colorful characters, and a satisfying small-town puzzle, A Classic Case of Murder serves up a cozy Christmas mystery worth raising a cup of cheer to!

Pull up a chair for an A Christmas Carol literary dinner—where the holiday spirit is on the menu and mystery is the uninvited guest! A Classic Case of Murder is available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org, Kobo, and Mysterious Galaxy. For another helping of bookish mystery, check out the first two books in the A Literary Dining Mystery series: Murder on the Page and Murder by the Millions. Ready for a little giveaway cheer? You could win your choice of Murder on the Page or Murder by the Millions, plus a $15 gift card to Bookshop.org. In a beautiful mountain community near Asheville, North Carolina, caterer and personal chef Allie Catt serves up mouthwatering, literary-themed dinner parties inspired by her clients’ favorite books. Her next event is sure to be a roaring success—if a murderer isn’t a killjoy . . .

If it were true that the best thing a girl can be in this world is a fool, then Allie Catt would be out of luck. Fortunately, Allie’s business is a smashing success. And following her Pride and Prejudice event, grander plans await . . .

Feast for the Eyes bookstore manager and Allie’s best friend, Tegan, is hosting a book club soiree and wants it to be a glittering affair based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s iconic Jazz Age-set novel, The Great Gatsby. Soon, Art Deco table settings and visions of flappers are dancing the Charleston in their heads. Even Tegan’s prickly sister, Vanna, is on board. And surely, Allie’s tuxedo cat, Darcy, thinks it’s the cat’s meow. Amid the planning, charismatic developer Jason Gardner arrives in town to buy some historic buildings on Main Street. He, too, has plans: to create a modern mall. Allie is more than concerned. She even wants to protest. But when Jason invites her to cater a lavish party, she finds him surprisingly likable. Then she’s summoned to his estate for a meeting—and finds him dead.

Once again Allie’s landed in the middle of a crime scene. Worse, one of her earrings is later discovered near the body. And when police learn she was upset about the mall, she’s suspect #1. Allie’s blossoming sleuthing skills once cleared Tegan’s name, but can she save herself—before a killer writes her a not-so-great Gatsbyesque ending . . .

My Thoughts

Murder by the Millions by Daryl Wood Gerber has Allie Catt and Allie’s best friend and partner in the bookstore, Tegan, planning a Great Gatsby themed party.  Unfortunately, a murdered real estate developer put a crimp in their plans especially when the evidence points to Allie as the killer.  I have read every book that Daryl Wood Gerber has written, and I always look forward to her new releases.  I like the author’s friendly writing style which makes her stories easy to read.  There is a quote from The Great Gatsby before each chapter,  and I liked seeing similarities to the story.  Allie is a likeable character as is Tegan and Chloe, their bookstore clerk.  We get to learn what goes into planning a themed party.  I loved the descriptions of the clothes that Lillian, a local boutique owner, obtained for the guests to wear to the party (there are some beautiful gowns).  Allie researched the foods that were popular in the 1920s  and she talks about the delectable treats she is  going to whip up for the guests (recipes for some of the items at the end of the book).

The whodunit has Allie at the top of the suspect list.  Allie with help from her “Clue Crew” set out to identify the real killer.  There are a handful of suspects, pointed clues, some twists and turns, and a red herring or two.  There is a good reveal that nicely wraps up the whodunit. I love solving mysteries (keeps the brain sharp).  I identified who I thought was the guilty party early in the story, and I could not wait for the reveal to see if I was right (my mother says that I have read too many mysteries).  I enjoyed my visit to Bramblewood, and I was sorry when it came to an end.  Murder by the Millions is a delectable cozy with party planning, a dead developer, flapper fashions, curious clues, tasty tidbits, a maddening detective, and a book bash.

Murder by the Millions comes out October 28 and can be ordered from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Bookshop.org, Kobo, and Mysterious Galaxy.  The first book in A Literary Dining Mysteries is Murder on the Page. Daryl Wood Gerber has A Jingle of Justice, A Fairy Garden Mystery Novella, coming out December 1 (you can read it for free if you are a member of Kindle Unlimited). Murder in a Lavender Daze will be out on April 28, 2026 and it is the second book in An Aroma Wellness Mysteries.  If you follow Daryl Wood Gerber on Amazon, they will send you an email when she has a new book release.

Are you ready for the giveaway?  The prize is your choice (pick one) between book one (Murder on the Page) or two (Murder by the Millions) of A Literary Dining Mysteries plus a tote bag of swag. You can enter using the form below or click here.  Good Luck!  Thank you for dropping by today.  I will return on Wednesday, October 22 with Snowbound Threat by Lisa Phillips, Mary Alford, and Jessica Ashley. I am off to work in my garden and visit with the ducks.  My yard and carport have become the ducks hangout.  At dusk, they waddle off to snooze by the lake (it is so cute to see them waddling off single file).  I hope that you have a swell day!  Take care and Happy Reading!

Featuring twin hooks that cozy readers can’t get enough of—classic books and delicious food—this new series from the Agatha Award-winning, nationally bestselling author of several much loved series, including the Fairy Garden Mysteries and the French Bistro Mysteries, is a delicious treat for mystery lovers, especially fans of Ellery Adams, Krista Davis, and Lauren Elliott.

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that a genuinely top-notch party must be in want of a theme. Allie Catt, caterer and personal chef in the beautiful mountain community of Asheville, North Carolina, has devised a winning formula by using her clients’ favorite books as inspiration. Her first themed event is based on Pride and Prejudice (Allie’s cat, Darcy, approves), and it’s so popular that soon she has grand ideas for future parties based on Rebecca, The Great Gatsby, Babette’s Feast and more.

Business is booming, and a rival catering company is fuming. But there’s a sting in the tale when the aunt of one of Allie’s clients and best friends, Tegan, is murdered. Tegan is the victim’s sole heir, and quickly becomes the main suspect. Allie has no doubts about her friend’s innocence, but how to prove it?

Once again, her love of literature comes to the rescue, and with some guidance from her favorite fictional detectives, including Hercule Poirot and Sherlock Holmes, Allie sifts through the clues.

With a little luck—and the kind of pluck that would make Elizabeth Bennett proud—she may be able to stop a killer from serving up a second course of murder . . .

My Thoughts

I sat down eager to read Murder on the Page by Daryl Wood Gerber which is the debut of A Literary Dining Mysteries. There are a number of characters introduced in the beginning and it took me a while to keep them all straight.  Allie Catt is a talented chef and avid reader.  The mystery was interesting, but Allie needs to work on her sleuthing techniques (it is her first murder).   There were plenty of clues to help readers solve the crime.  We get a play-by-play of Allie’s daily activities, how she made each dish, and what each person wore (down to their boots). These details felt like filler since they did not contribute to the story (you may find yourself envying a pair of boots). The food descriptions will have your mouth watering.  Pride and Prejudice fans will enjoy the references to that tale as well as the quotes. The beginnings of a romance between Allie and a certain someone lacked believability.  We will have to wait and see what happens in the next A Literary Dining Mystery.  Murder on the Page is a curious culinary cozy with busy bookstore, gastronomic triumphs, a dead friend, a rival caterer, a cold detective, curious clues, a revealing will, and a plucky chef.

Murder on the Page is available from  AMAZON, BARNES AND NOBLE, BOOKSHOP.ORG,  KOBO, and MYSTERIOUS GALAXY.  You can find Daryl Wood Gerber's other novels here. Daryl Wood Gerber has Essence of Foul Play coming out March 25, 2025.  It is the debut of An Aroma Wellness Mysteries. Would you like to win a copy of Murder on the Page along with some swag?  Click here to enter.  Good Luck!  Thank you for stopping by today.  I was not sure that I would be able to do this post.  Hurricane Milton was extremely destructive and my home was not spared.  I was certainly grateful when our power was restored.  Our carport, storage shed, and screened in porch suffered damage as well as our roof (it looks like the edge of our roof was pried up). Naturally, that means water has gotten inside and caused damage.  Thankfully, my mother and I are okay as well as our neighbors.  I am lucky to live in such a caring and helpful community.  I will return tomorrow to feature A Christmas Duet by Debbie Macomber.  Do not forget to enter the giveaway!  Take care and Happy Reading!
