Personal chef and caterer Allie Catt combines her love of fiction with her love of food in the scenic North Carolina mountains—but amid her latest themed event, based on Dickens’s beloved classic, A Christmas Carol, a rare-book expert’s goose is cooked…

In the charming town of Bramblewood, not far from Asheville, Allie’s preparing for a special seasonal soiree: a literary-themed dinner party that’s a tribute to Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol. It’ll take place at the Amber Lantern, the quaint inn recently opened by her best friend’s mother, Noeline—and the holiday spirit has even led a Scroogelike local businessman to lend his prized first edition of the nineteenth-century novella for the event.

With the voices of carolers ringing in the air and the community theater staging a special performance, it looks like it will be a happy Christmas—until the priceless book disappears and someone murders the expert who authenticated it. And if the police have their way, Allie’s lawyer friend Freddy will be dragged away in chains like Marley’s ghost…

The crime has also cast a shadow over Noeline’s fledgling business, so Allie feels doubly obliged to find the real killer among the gathered guests and local visitors—and put an end to this nightmare. It’s time to investigate them all, every one . . .

My Thoughts

Deck the halls, gather the suspects, and prepare for a delightfully Dickensian mystery! In A Classic Case of Murder by Daryl Wood Gerber, Allie Catt is ready to cry “Bah, humbug!” when a man is murdered during her Charles Dickens–themed A Christmas Carol literary dinner. Light, festive, and character-driven, the story weaves its literary theme throughout, with passages from A Christmas Carol opening each chapter and references to Dickens’s life and works adding fascinating historical tidbits. The mystery offers a merry surplus of suspects—excuse me, guests—and everyone seems to have a motive, leaving them quick to point fingers. Allie and her friend Tegan must work quickly to solve the crime before it sinks the Amber Lantern.

With a sizable cast, the character list at the beginning is especially helpful, while the delectable treats Allie bakes for her clients are sure to make mouths water. As the third installment in the Literary Dining Mysteries, the book can be enjoyed as a standalone, though reading the series in order provides a richer introduction to the characters, town, and featured literary classics. Brimming with holiday charm, tempting culinary delights, colorful characters, and a satisfying small-town puzzle, A Classic Case of Murder serves up a cozy Christmas mystery worth raising a cup of cheer to!

Pull up a chair for an A Christmas Carol literary dinner—where the holiday spirit is on the menu and mystery is the uninvited guest! A Classic Case of Murder is available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org, Kobo, and Mysterious Galaxy. For another helping of bookish mystery, check out the first two books in the A Literary Dining Mystery series: Murder on the Page and Murder by the Millions. Ready for a little giveaway cheer? You could win your choice of Murder on the Page or Murder by the Millions, plus a $15 gift card to Bookshop.org. I’ll return on Wednesday, November 4, with Chasing Daniel's Daughter by Mindy Steele, the third book in the Daniel's Daughters series. These Ancient Bones by Heather Graham

These Ancient Bones
Book Summary

The X-Files meets Dan Brown in this suspenseful tale of dark magic, ancient curses, and modern murder, as two agents with unusual talents investigate a series of sensational crimes in the historic city of St. Augustine, Florida.

The case is sensational. Whistle-blower investigative journalist George Maynard has been killed in his St. Augustine home, his body so badly burned the morgue is needed to verify his identity. Paranormal investigator Shelly Mahoney has been transferred to a special unit to help law enforcement. Off the books, the unit is called the Krewe of Hunters and deals with “strange” cases.

At the murder scene with federal agent Grant Markham, Shelly makes an odd discovery: a stone etched with what appears to be a curse that invokes flames. If Shelly can use her ability to summon the dead—providing they have remained behind—she may unearth what happened.

Grant, too, has an unique ability. By holding the hand of the recently deceased, he can see what has happened to them. Yet in this case, neither of their gifts is of any help. As they set out to question those who might have had a motive, they also study ancient “curse tablets”—often used in the Greco-Roman world to cause death or warfare.

What ensues is a shocking discovery by the medical examiner and a search that takes the team to Italy where a similar murder may reveal the creators of the mystical tablets—made deadly with a little human assistance. But soon, the danger is closer than ever—because the target is Shelly . . .

My Thoughts

Beware: These Ancient Bones may lure you into the shadowy streets of St. Augustine and keep you happily haunted until the final page. Heather Graham delivers a wonderfully atmospheric mystery filled with ancient curses, creepy old cities, helpful ghosts, and a twisty murder investigation. The setting comes vividly to life through rich descriptions, city history, and recognizable landmarks, giving history-loving readers plenty to savor while adding depth and texture for anyone who enjoys an immersive backdrop.

A murdered journalist, a mysterious stone etched with an ancient curse, and two investigators with special abilities make for an irresistible setup. The investigation moves along with steady momentum, offering twists, turns, and multiple suspects that kept me guessing. The supernatural elements add an extra shiver of charm, while the quick-blooming romance brings a lively spark to the suspense. As the second book in The Crows series, These Ancient Bones still works well as a standalone, making it easy for new readers to jump right in. Fans of atmospheric history, ghostly chills, and twist-filled mysteries will find plenty to love here. Step carefully—once this ghostly mystery has you in its grip, you may not want to escape.

Ready to curl up with These Ancient Bones and maybe keep one light on? You can find it on Amazon and at other major booksellers. If you’re new to The Crows series, the first book, The Witching Hours, is available to read for free with Kindle Unlimited—perfect for a little spooky binge-reading. And if your book stack could use a cozy, crafty detour with plenty of seaside charm, be sure to check out Danger Looms by Betty Hechtman. I’ll be back on Tuesday, September 1, with Sarah Addison Allen’s Paper Ghosts. Until then, grab a cozy blanket, guard your bookmarks, and may your next read rattle the teacups in all the best ways!

Emma Brennan always knew that her idyllic California hometown of Carmel-by-the-Sea would be the perfect place to open her very own spa. The success of her Aroma Wellness Spa, gift shop, and café has proved her right. But while the business is located in the Courtyard of Peace, Emma finds herself privy to events that are far from serene—like murder . . .

With its soothing décor and tempting treatments, customers are flocking to Aroma Wellness for more than just facials and massages. Lately, Emma has been booking private events, from spa parties to bridal showers and birthdays. Next on her calendar is something really unique: A “Happily Divorced” party.

After eight years of marriage, Addison Lacey is divorcing her husband, whom she claims convinced her he was Mr. Nice Guy when he was really Mr. Controlling Guy. To kick off her journey toward becoming a better version of herself, Addison wants to celebrate, bigtime. Her wealthy mother, Gianna, a former model turned difficult diva, is footing the bill. . . . But when Emma goes to Gianna’s home to pick up the final payment, she and Addison find her dead in her bed amid the aroma of lavender, with an herbal-infused pillow from the party nearby.

Soon, Addison is a prime suspect. But Emma knows there are plenty of others Gianna rubbed the wrong way, including her soon-to-be ex-son-in-law. Once again, with the help of her cousin, her nana, and her trusted Birman cat, Vivi, Emma is determined to sniff out a killer—whether the police like it or not . . .

My Thoughts

Murder in a Lavender Daze by Daryl Wood Gerber takes us back to Emma Brennan’s Aroma  Wellness Spa (plus gift shop and café) in charming Carmel-by-the Sea, California.  I always enjoy returning to Carmel-by-the-Sea.  It is a lovely setting with kind residents, great shops, and delightful fairies. I enjoyed catching up with Emma and the other characters including a couple from A Fairy Garden Mysteries.

The author's vivid descriptions made the setting easy to picture.   I thought having a divorce party was a wonderful idea (put the past behind you and start your next chapter with positivity).  Of course, in this town, a divorce party is bound to go awry.  The mystery was enjoyable, with well-placed clues. The ending left me smiling.  There are recipes at the end including one for double chocolate chip cookies.  Murder in a Lavender Daze can be read as a standalone.  Murder in a Lavender Daze is a merry mystery with a gift shop skirmish, an uplifting facial, a murdered mother, calming lavender, a planted pillow, a cute cat, and helpful fairies.

Recipe for Banana Protein Muffins

Good for You!

All my mystery series to date include recipes. The Cheese Shop Mysteries feature a lot of cheese recipes. The French Bistro Mysteries feature French food. The Cookbook Nook Mysteries have a wide variety of choices. The Fairy Garden Mysteries tend to be tea party type recipes. The Literary Dining Mysteries feature recipes from the era that pertains to the book club book. Some of the recipes I share are good for your health and some are simply tasty.

In my Aroma Wellness Series, the chef for the café is serious about providing food that is beneficial for her customers. Eating the right food, according to Sierra, is vital to one’s stamina.

I can’t disagree. I’m a cook and baker, and I’ve done a lot of research on ingredients that are used in recipes. I like to know which ones are supplying which vitamins or protein or both.

Banana Protein Muffins, a recipe included in Murder in a Lavender Daze, are delicious and good for you. According to Healthline: whey protein may help promote muscle growth, support weight loss, and manage conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and inflammatory bowel disease, among other benefits.  Protein also provides energy throughout the day. Bananas provide essential vitamins B6 and C, which support blood cell production, immunity, and the nervous system’s health.

Isn’t it nice to know you’re eating something yummy and good for you? Don’t you feel exonerated from guilt? I know I do.  Enjoy!

Banana Protein Muffins

(Gluten-free version of Banana Protein Muffins)

(Yield: 10–12 muffins)

Ingredients:

2 bananas, mashed

2 eggs

¼ cup honey

2 tablespoons water

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

½ cup almond flour

½  cup sweet rice flour

½ cup protein powder, vanilla flavored

2 teaspoons baking powder

1 tablespoon whey powder

½ teaspoon cinnamon

¼ teaspoon salt

½ cup chocolate or carob chips

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line a muffin tin with 12 liners and set aside. I like to spray the liners with oil because the protein powder (or any gluten-free batter) can stick to the liners.

In a large bowl, whisk together the mashed bananas, eggs, honey, water, and vanilla extract.

Add in the almond flour, sweet rice flour, protein powder, baking powder, whey powder, cinnamon,  and salt. Mix well.

Stir in the chocolate chips or carob chips.

Scoop the batter into the liners, filling each about 3/4 of the way up. Bake 18–22 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.  Remove from the oven and cool on a rack for at least 20 minutes.

*If you want to make these using regular flour, simply swap out the almond flour and sweet rice flour for regular flour. Measure for measure. Enjoy!

Murder in a Lavender Daze is available at Amazon, B&N, Kobo, Bookshop.org, and Website. The first An Aroma Wellness Mystery is Essence of Foul Play.  If you wish to be notified of Daryl Wood Gerber upcoming releases, follow her on Amazon.  Are you ready for a giveaway?  The prize is a $20 Book.org Gift Certificate and your choice of Essence of Foul Play (first book in An Aroma Wellness Mystery), Murder on the Page (A Literary Dining Mystery #1), or Murder by the Millions (A Literary Dining Mystery #2).  I have given you three ways to enter. Truffle Trouble by Amanda Flower

Truffle Trouble

Book Summary

Combining the sugar rush of candy making with a fascinating look at Amish life, a quirky whodunit, and a sweet romance between chocolatier Bailey King and Sheriff Aiden Brody, Amanda Flower’s USA Today bestselling Amish Candy Shop Mysteries continue, as summer wedding season comes to the village of Harvest, Ohio…

Horror d'oeuvres

Summer is finally upon the village of Harvest, Ohio, nestled in picturesque Amish Country, and folks are abuzz over their very own Bailey King’s upcoming June wedding. The Amish Candy shop owner and star of TV’s Bailey’s Amish Sweets is marrying Holmes County Sheriff Aiden Brody. To sweeten the occasion will be a scrumptious giant chocolate truffle wedding cake, made especially for the happy couple by Bailey’s New York City mentor, Jean Pierre. Other than the risk of the ring bearer, Jethro the pig, taking a bite out of the confection, what could go wrong?
As it turns out, a food-related disaster does befall the day. But with Bailey in the mix, it’s nothing so pedestrian as a peckish pig. At the reception, a wedding guest dies after sampling the hors d'oeuvres. Café owner and new caterer Darcy Woodin, who made all the food except the desserts, is pegged by police as the number one suspect. Even more incriminating, the victim is one of Darcy's ex-boyfriends . . .

Still, Bailey is friends with Darcy, and she’s certain the young woman is innocent. Even before the first dance with her new husband, Bailey’s on the case. Can she help solve it in time for her honeymoon—or will a killer try to end her happily ever after before it’s even begun . . .?

Recipe included!

My Thoughts

Truffle Trouble by Amanda Flower is a cute tale.  I love visiting Harvest, Ohio to check in with  Bailey as well as her family and  friends.  Bailey and Aiden are finally (it is about time) getting married.  Everyone in Harvest is invited (English and Amish) including Jethro.  Of course, it would not be Bailey’s wedding without a snafu or a murder (or both).  I just love the characters in this series.  Lois is a hoot (I want to be like her at that age), and she seems to have caught the eye of a wedding guest.

The whodunit has Bailey asking questions and searching for clues. Aiden should really put her on the payroll.  Bailey finds herself with extra activities to do since she cannot seem to say no (she is too nice).  Jethro, the polka dotted pig, spends quite a bit of time in Bailey’s company.  He shares Nutmeg’s bed at Swissmen Sweet’s (Bailey needs to invest in a larger pet bed). I laughed often while reading Truffle Trouble. It is a lighthearted, fun story.  Truffle Trouble is the tenth An Amish Candy Shop Mystery, and it can be read as a standalone. Personally, I recommend reading this entertaining series from the beginning.  Truffle Trouble is an amusing story with a long-awaited wedding,  a precocious polka dotted pig, an incredible chocolate cake, a flirtatious Lois, a murdered man, a determined Margot, and, hopefully, the happy couple departing on their honeymoon.

Truffle Trouble can be obtained from Amazon*.  You can find the rest of The Amish Candy Shop Mysteries here.  If you enjoy The Amish Candy Shop Mysteries, you should check out The Amish Matchmaker Mysteries (they are delightful).  You can find Amanda Flower's other cozy mysteries here.

Thank you for stopping by today.  I will be sharing my thoughts on Feuding with the Amish Farmer by Anne Blackburne on Thursday, April 2.  I am off to get some work done outside.  I am trying to get all the outside work done before the heat and humidity descend on Florida.   I hope that you have a wonderful Wednesday.  Take care and Happy Reading!
