My Thoughts

The Island Bakeshop by Roseanna M. White is a delightful, heartfelt story that transports readers to Avon, North Carolina. I loved the author’s descriptive writing style, which vividly brought both the setting and the characters to life. The historical chapters blended beautifully with the main storyline and added extra depth to an already charming novel. Harper and Beck were absolutely wonderful together, and I thought they were perfect for each other. Their banter was fun and engaging, and I especially loved the nicknames they came up with for one another. There is also a terrific cast of secondary characters, including Kennedy and Lara from The Island Bookshop, the first book in The Island Shop series. It was such a treat to catch up with Lara, Kennedy, and their friends. 

A subtle thread of faith runs through the story, and there is just the right touch of mystery to keep things even more interesting. Roseanna M. White skillfully weaves romance, drama, mystery, and faith into an engaging, well-paced story that kept me eagerly turning the pages. The Island Bakeshop can definitely be read as a standalone. I finished this book with a smile on my face and a craving for ginger fairings.

My Thoughts

The Island Bookshop by Roseanna M. White is a delightful diversion.  I like the author’s descriptive writing style which brought the setting and characters to life.   I was surprised by the historical chapters, but they were a great addition. The letters give the sisters a glimpse into the past as well as a teentsy mystery.  Those chapters added another layer to the story, and I like how everything tied together. The sister’s strong relationship added to the story.   I loved the sister’s charming bookstore. I enjoyed the references to some of my favorite childhood books.  The romance was sweet, especially with it being centered around the bookstore which is brimming with  books. I found the authenticating of old books to be fascinating. Faith is beautifully woven into the story.  The Island Bookshop made me want to hop into my car and head to the Outer Banks.

Book Summary

A Portrait of Loyalty by Roseanna M. White has Zivon Marin, a high-ranking Russian cryptographer, fleeing Russia with his brother.  A train wreck in France separates the two brothers with Zivon finding employment in England with Admiral Hall.  Lily Blackwell uses her photography skills to alter photographs for the government intelligence division.  Lily’s father got her the position and they are careful to keep it a secret from her mother who does not approve of the propaganda.  Mr. Blackwell invites Lt. Theo Clarke and Zivon to dinner where they meet his daughters, Lily and Ivy.  Friendship develops between ZIvon and Lily, but it soon blooms into more.  Lily always has her camera with her and likes to photograph Zivon.  When she develops her photos, Lily discovers that someone is following Zivon.  Zivon wonders if the Bolsheviks have found him.  An inflammatory newspaper article calls Zivon’s loyalty to England into question.  Lily works with others to prove Zivon’s innocence and learn who is beyond the matter.  What does the future hold for Zivon?

My Thoughts

A Portrait of Loyalty Roseanna M.White is the 3^rd novel in The Codebreakers.  It can be read as a standalone, but I believe you will have a better reading experience if the series is read in order.  I thought A Portrait of Loyalty was well-written with developed characters.  Ms. White takes readers back to 1918 in London where they are diligently fighting the Germans.  The point-of-view switches between several characters including Zivon and Lily.  It was fascinating learning about the work Lily did for the war effort.  The author really brought Lily’s characters and the work she did to life.  The way they would take photos and alter them was intriguing.  Lily also took plenty of photos with the camera she carried everywhere with her.  I could tell the author did her research for this story.  The information about the Bolsheviks, espionage, breaking codes, and the Spanish flu are all included.  There was just the right amount of detail.  The author managed to walk that fine line between not enough and too much.  The pace of the story picked up near the end as well as the tension.  I was eager to see how the story would finish.  The romance was sweet and will make you smile.   A Portrait of Loyalty is an emotional story (joy, hope, grief, sadness, and despair).  I liked how Lily helped Zivon regain his trust in God.  He wondered how God can let so much violence.   Zivon needed help in renewing his faith.  I was happy to catch up with the characters from On Wings of Devotion and The Number of Love.  A Portrait of Loyalty is a charming historical novel that provided a good ending to The Codebreakers.

On Wings of Devotion by Roseanna M. White

Happy Easter!  I hope you and your loved ones are having a special day with plenty of sweet treats.  

On Wings of Devotion by Roseanna M. White has Arabelle Denler working as a nurse at Charring Cross Hospital in London of February of 1918.  The young ladies volunteering at the hospital gather each evening to watch Phillip “Black Heart” Camden walk from the Admiralty building where he works to his residence.  Many people believe Phillip should still be in prison for what he did to his squadron.  It does not help that Phillip receives threats daily from the wife of one of the deceased pilots.  Phillip’s mother comes to London needing his assistance.  It seems his sister, Cassandra has gotten herself into a pickle with a fellow.  He would like to marry her, but he is already betrothed.  Phillip decides to intervene in his own unique way and meets the heiress Arabelle Denler.  Phillip becomes Arabelle’s protector and Arabelle realizes she is meant to help him heal.  Philip is surprised when a woman approaches him one day outside the Admiralty.  He can tell she is up to something, and it is up to Phillip to uncover the truth.  On Wings of Devotion is the second novel in The Codebreakers series.  It can be read as a standalone if you have not read The Number of Love featuring Margot De Wilde.  Arabelle Denler and Phillip Camden are great characters.  Arabelle is a Christian woman who believes God put Phillip in her life for a reason.  Phillip wishes he died with the rest of his squadron in The Incident (as he calls it).  He is a strong man with a big heart.  You can tell that Phillip loves his family and will do what it takes to help them.  He also has a fun loving side which rarely comes out.  The two of them complement each other which makes for an entertaining story.  The author has a wonderful writing style which draws the reader into her story and holds them until the end.  Roseanna M. White captured the time period and made me feel that I was there with the characters.  I loved the intrigue surrounding our mystery woman and I could not wait to see how this thread would playout.  I liked that Margot De Wilde and her fiancé (from The Number of Love) are in the story along with Barclay Pearce and his family from Shadows Over England series.  On Wings of Devotion is a story of forgiveness and redemption.  The author combined romance, humor, mystery and intrigue along with complex characters into one entertaining story.

When I told my best friend and critique partner what book I was pitching next to my publisher, her response was something along the lines of, “That sounds awesome. Also, you’re crazy, and I do not envy you writing that one.”

I laughed…and knew exactly what she meant. Because I was setting out to write a heroine who was a mathematician—which I am definitely not. A heroine who was utterly indifferent to love and marriage—which makes for a difficult story when one writes romance. A character who had an unshakeable faith—which has to be shaken at least a bit in order to make for growth throughout the story. And more, a character who has “issues,” let’s call it, that those familiar with such things will recognize…and which those who aren’t will probably think are quirks.

I was setting out to write a story that would be challenging for me, every step of the way. And the result is a book I’m incredibly in love with and so happy to share with the world.

The Number of Love is all about Margot, who thinks and even prays in numbers. Born and raised in Belgium, she and her family fled to England in 1914 when the Germans invaded her homeland. Thanks to her remarkable abilities with numbers and patterns, she’s now employed at Room 40, the Admiralty’s secret codebreaking branch. But as I was contemplating what sort of man could ever win Margot’s heart, I knew he had to be very different… someone active where she’s still. Someone outgoing where she turns inward. Someone who sees in her what she never can, and who believes she can grasp the dreams that society tells her are unbefitting a woman. This is how Drake was born—a field agent employed by Room 40.

I can honestly say this is the only book I’ve ever written that required me to borrow my daughter’s algebra book while I was writing it, LOL. And though every single scene was a challenge, it was one I thoroughly enjoyed. I hope you’ll join me on the journey that Margot and Drake are on, which answer the question my husband cheekily asked more than once as I was writing it: what is the number of love?

My Summary

The Number of Love by Roseanna M.White is the first novel in The Codebreakers series.  Margot De Wilde works as a cryptographer in Room 40 in the Old Admiralty Building in London where she concentrates on breaking the enemy’s codes so they can decipher their intercepted communications.  The Great War has been raging in Europe for the last three years and England has an extensive intelligence network working to gather information to thwart the enemy.  Lt. Drake Elton encounters Margot when his sister applies for a secretarial position.  He likes her unique humor, but he is departing for Spain where he will be working undercover.  Margot loses someone close to her and the grief causes the numbers that run through her head to become quiet.  Drake returns to England after he is injured, and a deadly enemy follows him.  He spends time with Margot who has become his sister’s best friend.  But Margot has plans for after the war and they do not involve love.  Drake needs to convince Margot that sometimes it is good to follow one’s heart and not one’s mind.  Can love blossom amid espionage, encrypted correspondence, biological warfare, and a deadly enemy intent on revenge? 

 

My Thoughts

The Number of Love is powerful historical novel.  Roseanna M. White produced a well-crafted and thoughtful novel with strong, complex characters.  Margot De Wilde is a brilliant mathematician whose education was interrupted by the war.  She utilizes her talents by breaking the enemy’s codes.  Numbers are constantly running through her head and some of them are vitally important.  She relies on facts instead of emotions and pours herself into her work. Drake Elton is a naval lieutenant whose background makes him a perfect field agent for the intelligence services.  Drake has a big heart and Margot is never far from his thoughts since the moment they met.  Drake has an enemy following him who performs missions, but he also has his own agenda.  The author did her research for this book.  I like how she incorporated the historical information from the Great War along with Room 40 with the codebreakers and the work of the field agents.  Faith was an integral part of the story and our character’s lives.  I appreciated that Barclay, Willa, Lukas and other characters from Shadows Over England series were included in the story.  The vivid and detailed descriptions allowed me to visualize the characters and scenes.  I would have liked a little more action which would have added a little more spark to the story.  The Number ofLove is an intriguing and captivating historical novel with suspense, romance, friendship, mystery, faith and family.

Last year, as I finished up the writing of An Hour Unspent, my great-grandmother passed away at the age of 103. As I sat at her funeral service and listened to the heartfelt memorial raised up to her by her kids and grandkids, I realized anew that this woman had been a matriarch in the truest sense of the word. She’d taught my family for generations how to love the Lord and each other, how to serve the Lord and each other, and how to trust the Lord and each other. Grandma Seward was, in so many ways, the one who instilled in me my idea of what family really is.

That idea—that it’s those knit together by love more than blood, and that faith is the strongest foundation—is what I built my unusual family of thieves upon in the Shadows Over England series. And strange as it is to liken my twenty-something reformed-thief hero to my 103-year-old-grandmother, Barclay Pearce is very much to his family what Maxine Seward was to mine.

The founder. The caregiver. The leader.

I knew as I began the series that I would write about Barclay in book three, and as I got to know him better throughout the series, I grew so excited to share his story! This is a man who led his family first into and then out of a life a crime, always for the right reasons—so he could provide for the children under his care. All he ever wanted to do was give them what he himself had lost. To show them love. To prove to them that they were worth any sacrifice.

It was truly a blessing for me to get to write the story in which Barclay found someone to come alongside him, to appreciate and learn to understand him. To finally share what started him down this path. I loved the idea that only a reformed thief could steal the time another family needed to overcome their own trials.

There are many historical items in the book that were such fun to explore—watchmaking of the era, the suffrage movement in England, technological advancements of the war—but at the heart, this isn’t a story about any of those.

It’s a story about how far people should go for love. I hope you enjoy Barclay’s story as much as I did!

My Thoughts

An Hour Unspent by Roseanna M. White is the third book in Shadows Over England series.  Barclay Pearce has given up a life of crime and now uses his talents to help his country win the war.  Barclay’s latest assignment is clockmaker, Cecil Manning who has an invention that would give England’s flying men an edge over Germany’s pilots.  On the way to the Manning residence, Barclay saves a woman from a mugging.  The woman turns out to be Evelina Manning, the clockmaker’s daughter.  Barclay is intrigued by the independent woman and perplexed by the identity of her mugger.  Evelina is shocked when her fiancé, Basil ends their engagement three weeks before the wedding and learns that he has enlisted in the army.  Basil tells Evelina that she lacks warmth and the last thing he wants is a marriage like their parents.  Evelina never thought that standing up for a woman’s right to vote and for safe working conditions would drive away Basil.  She dreads telling her mother about the broken engagement.  Barclay works with Mr. Manning on his invention in the evenings and makes a point of arriving early to spend time the clockmaker’s fiery daughter.  It seems that someone else is interested in Mr. Manning’s device, and they will go to great lengths to acquire it.  Barclay will need to dig deep into his bag of tricks if he is to complete this assignment and keep the Manning family safe.

An Hour Unspent is an intriguing novel.  It begins in May of 1915 when England is at war with Germany.  I recommend reading the books in Shadows Over England series in order.  Each book builds upon the previous one and it will provide you a better understanding about the family and its members.  The characters from A Name Unknown and A Song Unheard appear in this installment along with the rest of Barclay’s family.  I enjoyed getting to know more about Barclay who is the head of his family.  He has given up a life of crime, has become a Christian and is reading the Bible.  When he is asked to acquire an item, he has a moral dilemma.  There is only one way to get it and it is not legal.  Barclay’s faith continues to grow as does his character. Barclay is issued a new challenge to steal an hour from Big Ben and the solution is unique (and practical).  Barclay decides to follow the mysterious Mr. V one evening.  Readers get to know a little more about enigmatic man.  I thought An Hour Unspent was well-written and researched.  The author captured the time-period with the character’s speech, clothing, items available, conveyances, books, music and the environment (descriptions of Poplar, the buildings).  Ms. White provides detailed descriptions that brings the scenes to life.  I wish, though, that the pace had been a little peppier (it drags along sometimes).  Unique historical events are included in the story and it was fascinating to learn the origins of Rolex.  Wrist watches were considered a newfangled idea that would not catch on. The mystery is captivating with its many twists and turns.   I was happy the author provided an epilogue. An Hour Unspent combines a thought out plot along with great characters, drama, suspense, humor, romance, friendship, family, and faith.
