My Thoughts

The Unexpected Caller by Shelley Shepard Gray is a charming and heartwarming debut for The Amish Widows Club series. I truly enjoyed getting to know Leanna Mast, along with Evan Keim and his family. Evan’s son, Jeremy, quickly became a favorite of mine. Though he is only seventeen, he offers wise advice, shows remarkable kindness, and has such a big heart. Leanna’s puppy, Bumble, is an adorable addition who brings extra sweetness to the story. I also loved the idea of the Amish Widows Club itself. It is a wonderful way for widowed women to find companionship, receive help when they need it, meet new people, and step into fresh adventures. 

Shelley Shepard Gray’s engaging writing style pulled me easily into the story, and I appreciated the gentle humor sprinkled throughout. The epilogue was especially satisfying, wrapping things up in a lovely and thoughtful way. Faith is beautifully woven throughout the novel, adding depth and encouragement. My favorite quote is, “. . . I know that the Lord had already determined our futures. Because, one way or another, the Lord always provides, Jeremy. He holds us in His arms and guides our futures. That is how it is. It is how it will always be.” I am already looking forward to the next The Amish Widows Club novel, which will feature Jenna. This is the kind of story that leaves you smiling, uplifted, and eager to return to this wonderful circle of friends.

My Thoughts

D is for Daisy by Shelley Shepard Gray is a charming and heartwarming Amish story with delightful characters and an uplifting message. Daisy quickly won me over with her lively spirit and unconventional ways. Unlike many Amish women, she feels most at home in the barn rather than in the house, and her deep love for animals makes her especially endearing. Kyle is a wonderful match for her, and I enjoyed watching their story unfold. I also found Kyle’s bosses, Mr. and Mrs. Miller, to be entertaining additions to the story as they enthusiastically buy a farm without having any real idea how to run one. Their situation adds humor and warmth to the book. 

This sweet story blends hope, friendship, family, romance, and faith in a way that feels sincere and encouraging. Although D is for Daisy is the fourth book in the Amish ABC’s series, it can easily be read as a standalone. With its lovable characters, gentle humor, and heartfelt message, D is for Daisy is a sweet Amish romance that blooms with hope from beginning to end.

Hardy Anderson is always ready to help his social worker sister, Bev--which now includes hiding an Amish woman until a killer can be brought to justice. Surely if they dress her in English clothing, Hardy can hide her at the sprawling ranch where he works. But the killer is desperate--and there's no telling what lengths he will go.

My Thoughts

Unshaken by Shelley Shepard Gray captured my attention right away.  I felt for Stephanie who is scared and on the run after witnessing a murder.  Hardy is a sweet guy, but he is protective of Stephanie.  Hardy’s sister asked him to keep Stephanie safe, and he takes this task seriously.  I also liked Hardy’s sister, Bev and his boss, Carter.  The author’s picturesque descriptions allowed me to envision the setting.  I enjoyed the suspense and action which had me quickly turning the pages to see what would happen next.  I like the thread of faith that was stitched through the story.  I loved the epilogue which nicely wrapped up the story. I closed the book with a happy sigh and a satisfied smile on my face. Unshaken has a well-crafted plot that blends suspense, romance, and faith along with great characters into one gripping tale.

My Thoughts

Their Surprise Reunion by Shelley Shepherd Gray is a sweet story.  I enjoyed getting to know Kayla, Sean, and Jackson.  We get to meet some delightful characters including Edna who runs Loaves of Love, a local food bank.   I think that it is a wonderful organization, and I wish there were one in every city.  I like the growth we get to see in the characters, especially Kayla.  Sean’s son, Jackson is a sweetheart, and he adds humor to the story.  I enjoyed this heartwarming story.  I finished Their Surprise Reunion with a smile on my face.  I am looking forward to the next A Matchmaker Knows Best Romance. Their Surprise Reunion is an uplifting tale with a helpful food bank, an understanding soul, a thoughtful teacher, a caring child, baking bread, an intimidating manager, a shameful secret, and a hopeful future.

My Thoughts

B is for Bonnet by Shelley Shepard Gray is a story about Jonny Schrock who is straddling two worlds.  Jonny is trying to decide whether or not to become Amish when he has a health scare.  B is for Bonnet is an easy story to read.  The point-of-view switches between various characters including Jonny and Treva Kramer, a woman who, with the help of her family, turned the barn into a coffee shop (Trailside Café) with delectable baked goods.  We also get to spend time with Matt Schrock, Johnny’s father and Kennedy, his new love interest.  I like that we get to catch up with Johnny’s siblings and his grandparents (Jonny’s grandparents are sweet, kind, and patient).  It was interesting learning about e-bikes and that the Amish have taken to using them as a mode of transportation.  I had no idea that a well-known motorcycle company now produces electric bicycles.

The romance between Treva and Jonny progresses slowly until the end when it was rushed.  I am glad that we got to meet Jonny’s mother, and I hope we get to know her better in the next installment in the series. Forgiveness is one of the messages in the story.  Sometimes the one that needs forgiveness the most is yourself.  While B is for Bonnet is the second book in the Amish ABCs series, it can be read as a standalone. I am looking forward to reading C is for Courting when it comes out.  B is for Bonnet is a sweet story with delectable coffee, a cholesterol scare, a hurt heart, parent problems, bossy siblings, great grandparents, and a benevolent bishop.

My Thoughts

Unforgiven by Shelley Shepard Gray is a story that draws you in.  It starts off slow, but it arouses your curiosity about Seth Zimmerman and Tabitha Yoder.  The story is well-written.  The characters are developed and realistic.  The secondary characters add additional depth to the story.  Seth’s sister, Melonie added humor.  She is a nosy parker. Unforgiven is an emotional tale (have a box of tissues nearby).  Seth and Tabitha have both faced challenges.  Tabitha is on edge wondering if the danger from her past has found her.  The main themes in Unforgiven are trust, guilt, and forgiveness.  It is hard to trust after you have been severely hurt.  Time and patience are required by both parties.  It is hard to forgive someone that has wronged you (I struggle with this one myself) and it is even more challenging to forgive yourself.  Of course, God is always ready to forgive us (we just have to ask).  The story reminds us that that God is always with us (we are not alone).  Unforgiven is one of those stories that will linger with you long after you finish it.

My Thoughts

Her Secret Hope by Shelley Shepard Gray has Lilly Kurtz returning to Pinecraft for a fresh start. It has been two years since her first visit to the unique Amish and Mennonite town.  Lilly was adopted as a baby and her family never kept it a secret.  Actually, it seems one of the first things Mrs. Kurtz’s tells people (heavens knows why).  Lilly also did not feel accepted by the children at school.  Mary Margaret, Betsy, and Esther are the first true friends Lilly had had in her life.  I know what it is like to feel that you do not fit in and to have people judge you.  Lilly may be in a new city, but she has still has to learn to let people get to know her.  It seems that Lilly keeps a protective a shield around her.  The characters are realistic and developed.  I like that we get to catch up with Mary Margaret, Betsy, Esther, and their husbands.  

Lilly gets a job at bed and breakfast that is run by Nancy (the place the young women stayed on their first visit to Pinecraft).  I like that we get to catch up with Nancy and her friendly chef.  Lilly may believe that she is destined to remain single, but it seems God has other plans for her.  Of course, Lilly needs to be willing to let down her barriers and be happy with who she is.  I just love November Byler.  She is a spirited character.  I hope I am as lively and quick witted at that age.  I did feel that the story moved a little slow in places and there was a repetition of details.  The author captured Pinecraft and Siesta Key.  I understood why Lilly liked going to Siesta Key beach, it is a beautiful beach (it is my favorite beach).  Her Secret Hope is the third and final book in A Season in Pinecraft series.  It can be read as a standalone, but I recommend reading the series in order.  It will allow you to get to know the characters and their stories.  There are good life lessons in Her Secret Hope including that God is in control.  Her Secret Hope is a touching tale with a returning friend, a spirited grandmother, a bored farmer, a flirtatious chef, an alarming allegation, and a gracious God.

My Thoughts

Her Only Wish by Shelley Shepard Gray takes us back to Pinecraft, Florida.  Betsy Detweiler is returning with a list that she wishes to complete during her monthlong visit.  She calls it a life list.  Health issues as a child have prevented Betsy from doing normal child and teen activities.   Asthma does prevent you from doing normal physical activities, especially if you live in colder climates (I know from experience).  I thought Betsy was brave to try new activities.  It is not something that comes easy to people who are shy or who have been ill.  I enjoyed getting to know Betsy.  She meets some good people who help her complete her list.  Betsy encounters August Troyer at the Snow Bird Golf Course which is an Amish owned golf course.  August is smitten with Betsy from the very beginning.  August is lucky to have such a loving and caring aunt and uncle.  August’s parents are dedicated to their mission work but for the wrong reasons.  They acted like children at times instead of adults.  Betsy makes a difference in the lives of those she meets.  An example is Annie and Danielle who help Betsy learn to swim.  It gets you to think about your own life list.  

We also get to see that while you may want to learn an activity, you may not be good at that activity.  It is amazing to see what determination and hard work can do.  I enjoyed the beautiful descriptions of Pinecraft and nearby beaches (Siesta Key is my favorite beach).   I am looking forward to reading Lilly Kurtz’s story in Her Secret Hope.  Her Only Wish is the second book in A Season in Pinecraft series.  While Her Only Wish can be read as a standalone, I recommend reading Her Heart’s Desire.   I like that we get to catch up with Mary Margaret and Jayson from Her Heart's Desire.   Her Only Wish is an uplifting Amish tale with a thoughtful friend, golf lessons, beautiful beaches, protective parents, swimming sisters, and a life list.
