My Thoughts

On the Lamb by Tina Kashian has Lucy Berberian enjoying a bonfire with her friends until a scream rings out.  They find Melanie Haven, the local candy maker, standing by the prone body of Gilbert Lubinski.  Melanie and Gilbert had a small altercation earlier in the evening which puts Melanie at the top of the detective’s suspect list.  Melanie asks that Lucy use her sleuthing prowess to find the guilty party.  Gilbert was not liked in the community, not even by his aunt who he was trying to oust from her home.  Lucy has her work cut out for her if she is to prove Melanie’s innocence.  On the Lamb can be read as a standalone for those new to A Kitchen Kebab Mystery series.  Everything a new reader needs to know is included in On the Lamb.  Lucy has been working hard at the family’s Mediterranean restaurant which she manages and is looking forward to evening with her friends enjoying the first bonfire of the season.  I like the descriptions of Ocean City, New Jersey.  I especially enjoy hearing about the boardwalk, the tram and the various shops.  The word imagery brings the scenes alive in my mind.  There is a nice balance between mystery and time spent with Lucy, her friends, family and boyfriend.  The main characters are established, and a unique new character is introduced.  Lucy finally moves into her own apartment.  It is right on the beach much to her delight.  Her new landlord, Eloisa Lubinski is delightful with her eccentric clothing and zest for life.  Eloisa is hoping having Lucy live there will keep her nephew, Gilbert from pestering her about moving into an assisted living facility.  Of course, Gilbert ends up dead.  Lucy, with assistance from her best friend, Katie Watson, sets out to find the real culprit.  They talk to numerous suspects, verify alibis, and do a little illegal searching (when the opportunity strikes, you cannot pass it up).  It will depend upon your sleuthing level on whether you solve this whodunit.  The clues are there for you to find.  Lucy is trying to bring the family restaurant into the twenty-first century, but her father is stubborn (if it has worked for thirty years, why change it now is his philosophy).  It is a good thing that Lucy is equally tenacious.  Her romance with Azad is moving forward (personally, I prefer Michael).  I enjoyed the mouthwatering descriptions of the food and there are recipes included at the end of the book.  On the Lamb is a charming cozy mystery that will have you wanting to visit the Jersey shore.  On the Lamb has terrific taffy, a blazing bonfire, a snappy shih tzu, mouthwatering meals, a ghastly landlord, surfeit of suspects, and a conniving killer.

One Feta in the Grave (A Kebab Kitchen Mystery Book 3) by [Kashian, Tina]

My Thoughts

One Feta in the Grave by Tina Kashian takes us back to Ocean Crest, New Jersey on a hot August day.  Lucy Berberian is the manager of her family’s Mediterranean restaurant, Kebab Kitchen.  It is the opening day of a weeklong beach festival which begins with the sand sculpture contest.  Unfortunately, Archie Kincaid, owner of Seaside Gifts, is not playing by the rules and Katie Watson must ask him to step down from his judging duties.  Lucy is the organizer for the food and wine event in which Kebab Kitchen has a tent with mouthwatering delicacies from their head chef, Azad Zakarian.  Lucy decides to cool off in the afternoon with a walk on the beach where she discovers Archie shot dead under the boardwalk.  Detective Calvin Clemmons is in charge of the investigation and Officer Bill Watson, Katie’s husband, finds himself booted off the case.  Katie is at the top of Detective Clemmons suspect list after a loud altercation with the victim at city hall over a denied business license.  Lucy is not about to let her best friend be railroaded by the antagonistic detective.  Plus, Clemmons has shut down the beach festival and store owners are losing much needed income.  Archie managed to anger several townspeople and was known for the shouting matches with rival store owner, Harold Harper.  Lucy delves into the victim’s life in the hopes of uncovering the killer.  Lucy narrows her sights onto her target, but can she catch him.
A Kebab Kitchen Mystery (3 Book Series) by Tina Kashian

One Feta in the Grave is the third installment in A Kebab Kitchen Mystery series and each book can stand on its own.  I thought One Feta in the Grave contained good writing with steady pacing.  Lucy finds herself roped into helping at the beach festival courtesy of her best friend, Katie Watson who is responsible for the event.  Unfortunately, Archie Kincaid and his rival, Harold Harper manage to cause trouble right from the beginning.  Tina Kashian gives readers lovely descriptions of the town, the beach, and the various shops which brings the setting alive.  Lucy has left behind her career as an attorney to run Kebab Kitchen and she has rekindled her romance with head chef, Azad Zakarian.  Michael, who manages the bicycle rental shop for his uncle, is interested in Lucy and takes her out for long rides on his motorcycle.  I must admit that I am partial to Michael over the hot-headed, jealous Azad.  I like the various characters in the series as I find them likeable and relatable. I am especially fond of Lucy’s cute niece.  There are luscious descriptions of the food cooked and served at Kebab Kitchen.  Readers get to learn more about the food related to the Armenian culture.  The mystery intrigued me since it could not be solved immediately (I love a good puzzle).  There are multiple suspects who have good motive for harming Archie (at least in their eyes).  There are recipes at the end of the book for lentil soup, date stuffed cookies, and Greek salad with feta cheese.  One Feta in the Grave is a fun, light cozy mystery that will have you longing for a sunny day at the beach.  Join Lucy at the Jersey shore in One Feta in the Grave.

Lucy Berberian has taken over her family’s Mediterranean restaurant on the Jersey Shore after an unsatisfying stint at a Philadelphia law firm. It’s great to be back in her old beach town, even if she’s turning into a seasoned sleuth . . .
Catering a high-society wedding should bring in some big income for Kebab Kitchen—and raise its profile too. But she doesn’t give a fig what the cops think. He may have killer looks, but he’s no murderer. She just needs to prove his innocence, before he has to go on the lamb . . .

My Thoughts

Stabbed in the Baklava by Tina Kashian is the second A Kebab Kitchen Mystery.  Lucy Berberian is now the manager of her family’s restaurant, Kebab Kitchen in Ocean Crest, New Jersey.  Lucy is surprised when Philadelphia socialite, Scarlet Westwood asks Kebab Kitchen to cater her wedding in two weeks.  It is a tight timeline for the restaurant, but it would be excellent publicity.  Two weeks later they arrive at Castle of the Sea prepared to wow the wedding guests with their cuisine.  Preparations are going well until a drunken Henry Simms, local banker, stumbles into the kitchen and ends up in a verbal disagreement with Azad Zakarian, Kebab Kitchen’s head chef.  After extricating Henry from the kitchen, the rest of the meal goes off without a hitch.  Henry is later found in Kebab Kitchen’s van with a shish kebab skewer thrust through his neck.  Detective Calvin Clemmons, unfortunately, is assigned the case and he has narrowed his sights on Azad.  Lucy, at the urging of her parents, works to prove Azad’s innocence and unveil the killer.  Accompany Lucy on her campaign to decipher the clues and spot the individual who skewered the banker like a shish kebab!

Stabbed in the Baklava contains good writing and a nice steady pace which makes for an easy to read cozy mystery.  While Stabbed in the Baklava is the second book in series, it can be read alone.  The author provides Lucy’s backstory and summarizes the mystery from Hummus and Homicide.  Lucy has settled into managing the restaurant and is learning how to cook as well.  There are some luscious food descriptions that will have readers craving Mediterranean food.  Her attempts at making improvements at the restaurant have met with limited success.  Lucy has two love interests which include her old boyfriend, Azad Kazarian who has her parent’s approval and the handsome motorcycle riding Michael Citteroni.  While a cozy mystery needs to have some romance (it is expected), I prefer it to play out softly in the background and I am tired of love triangles.  The murder mystery was ingenuous.  I identified the victim and killer before the victim was skewered.  Lucy needs to work on how she asks suspects questions.  She lacks subtlety and her questions come across as accusatory (I am sure she will get better in time).  I hope the author introduces a new detective in a future book.  Detective Clemmons is the cliché nasty detective with a grudge because of an incident that occurred in high school.  I appreciate Lucy’s best friend, Katie Watson.  She is a lively character with an upbeat personality.  Katie is always up for adventure and has inside intel thanks to her police officer hubby.  I did feel that there was too much time devoted to Lucy speculating on the crime and I could have used less repetition of key details (like Lucy’s lack of cooking skills).  Stabbed in the Baklava is an undemanding cozy mystery with a quaint small town, charming characters and food descriptions that will have you salivating.  The next book in the series is One Feta in the Grave which will be published on February 26, 2019.

The author is giving away two copies of Stabbed in the Baklava (digital or print--winner's choice).  Click here to go to the giveaway form or use the form below.  Do not forget to leave a comment on my blog for an extra entry.  Please take the time to visit the other stops on the Great Escape Virtual Book Tour (see schedule below rafflecopter form).  There are spotlights, character guest posts, and author interviews. I will be featuring Goodbye Cruller World by Ginger Bolton tomorrow.  I hope you have a mesmerizing day.  Take care and Happy Reading!

Hummus and Homicide: A Kebab Kitchen Mystery

Welcome!  Clues in the Sand by Terry Ambrose is the second novel in A Seaside Cove Bed and Breakfast Mystery series.  It is a charming cozy mystery and will be published on March 15.  Plain as Day by Laura Bradford is An Amish Mystery short story that will be available to readers on March 13.

Hummus and Homicide by Tina Kashian is the first story in A Kebab Kitchen Mystery series.  Lucy Berberian is returning home to Ocean Crest, New Jersey after quitting her job as a patent attorney in Philadelphia.  Lucy’s parents own Kebab Kitchen and can certainly use her help in the restaurant since they are down a waitress. Lucy is happy to reconnect with her friend Katie Watson.  Lucy is staying with Katie and her police officer husband, Bill while she is in town.  Lucy is surprised to learn that her parents are contemplating selling the restaurant.  They already have three potential buyers that include Lucy’s former boyfriend, Azad Zakarian.  The one thing marring Lucy’s enjoyment at being home is Heather Banks.  Heather was the mean cheerleader girl in high school, and now she is the new health inspector.  She quickly learns that Heather has not changed one iota since high school.  Heather comes to do an inspection of the premises before the restaurant can be listed for sale and, despite the cleanliness of the facility, she lists nitpicky (and bogus) violations.  The next day Heather returns to eat from the new hummus bar (which she criticized the day before).  After Heather departs, Lucy takes the trash outside and finds Heather dead in the back-parking lot.  Detective Clemmons is assigned the case, but he holds a grudge against the Berberian family (thanks to Lucy’s sister).  Raffi, Lucy’s father, wants her to investigate Heather’s death and find the culprit before their business is ruined.  Lucy, with help from Katie, retraces Heather’s steps the day she was killed and delves into Heather’s life looking for suspects.  Who disliked Heather enough to murder her?  The bike shop owner, a restaurateur, the mob boss, the suspense author who was dating Heather, or the loan shark?  Join Lucy in her investigation in Hummus and Homicide.

Hummus and Homicide is nicely written and has a steady pace.  I like that the author sets the stage for the series by giving us Lucy’s background and introducing us to her family and friends.  The mystery was interesting, but the killer can easily be discerned early in the book (one detail is the key).  There are some interesting suspects that Lucy questions.  I just wish that there had been more action.  If Lucy is going to continue to be a sleuth, she needs to work on her questioning technique.  Her queries sounded more like accusations.  Lucy also has a temper (triggers easily) and loose lips.  You can tell that Tina Kashian (aka Tina Gabrielle) has written romance novels.  We have Lucy’s ogling her romantic interests.  She admires the attractive and handsome Azad (many times) and appreciates Michael Citteroni’s physique.  The family kept pushing Lucy and Azad together trying to rekindle their romance.  I prefer romances that progress slowly over the course of a series and for it not to overshadow the mystery element.  As usual, there was repetitive information (Cooking Kurt’s show was mentioned five times for example).  Hummus and Homicide was a typical cozy mystery where the main character returns home, someone dies, she investigates and solves the crime, there are love interests, potential sidekick, the amateur detective is inept in her questioning, and the main character realizes she likes being home and is going to stay.   There are some nice cozy moments in the book.  You can tell that Lucy’s family loves her and the mother is especially happy that her daughter has returned to Ocean Crest.  My rating for Hummus and Homicide is 3 out of 5 stars.  I will check out Stabbed in the Baklava when it releases in August.  Hummus and Homicide is just the first book in the series, and I hope Tina Kashian ups her game in the next book in A Kebab Kitchen Mystery series.  There are recipes (hummus) at the end of Hummus and Homicide

I appreciate you visiting today.  I am off to make a special birthday dinner for my daughter, Betsy.  She turned the big 30 today.  I will return tomorrow with my review of Who Moved My Goat Cheese? by Lynn Cahoon.  I hope one of your wishes comes true today.  Happy Reading!
