Bruce Hammack, a native Texan, began his professional writing career in the tenth grade when the local Rotary Club sponsored a writing contest for students in civics class. To the amazement of students and teachers alike, he won the prize of a twenty-five-dollar savings bond.

My Thoughts

Miami’s shadows have never looked so irresistible. Magic City Murder by Bruce Hammack is a fast-paced, well-crafted suspense novel packed with sharp twists, engaging dialogue, and memorable investigators. Hammack brings Miami vividly to life, blending the city’s glamour, danger, and gritty underbelly into a mystery that feels both authentic and exciting. From missing persons and murder to organized crime, red herrings, and hidden motives, the plot keeps the pages turning and the suspects shifting. I especially enjoyed how the story balances traditional detective work with emotional depth, giving it heart without ever slowing the suspense. The surprise ending is satisfying, clever, and well earned. Although Magic City Murder is the sixteenth installment in the A Smiley & McBlythe Mystery series, it works equally well as a standalone. Magic City Murder is the kind of mystery that grabs you early and keeps you guessing to the very last page.

It wasn’t long before the police detective returned and spoke in a firm, somber tone. “A car registered to Daniella Cutter is in a canal on the north side of the city. There’s a body in it.” Kate let out a gasp, her knees buckled, and she eased herself down to the floor. 

Steve turned his attention to Detective Ruiz. “No mention of a second body in the car?”

“Only one, believed to be a woman. I asked.”

“We’ll stay with Kate until we hear from you.”

“Thanks. You know the drill. I’ll need to talk to Ms. Bridges if it’s Daniella Cutter in the car.”

After seeing Manny to the door, Heather returned to the living room in time to see Rasheed helping

Kate off the floor. Steve wrestled a chair from the kitchen table. “Heather, help Rasheed. Put Kate next to the recliner and bring a chair over for you.” Kate took a long drink of water and seemed to rally. “Is this when the questions start?”

My Thoughts

After sixty-three books, the In Death series still knows how to deliver a pulse-pounding ride—and Fury in Death is no exception. J.D. Robb brings readers back into Eve Dallas’s world with the familiar mix of suspense, sharp characterization, and emotional warmth that makes this long-running series feel like a reunion with old friends. Eve, Roarke, Peabody, and the rest of the gang continue to grow and evolve, and it is always a pleasure to catch up with them. Of course, Galahad deserves his own spotlight: that chubby scene-stealer adds just the right touch of charm and humor whenever he appears. 

This installment takes a slightly different approach by revealing the culprit’s identity and motive early on, which gives the story a fresh, tension-filled angle rather than a traditional whodunit structure. While I usually enjoy puzzling out the mystery alongside Eve, this format lets the focus shift to the why, the how, and the race to bring everything together. The case itself is intriguing and clever, with intense moments that underscore just how high the stakes are. Some of the darker details are vivid, but they also reinforce the urgency of Eve’s work and the strength it takes to face such brutality head-on. Watching the pieces fall into place was deeply satisfying, and Fury in Death ultimately delivers another gripping, character-rich entry in the series. Best of all, newcomers can jump in and enjoy this book as a standalone—though longtime fans will find even more to love.

My Thoughts

I, Spy by L.M. Kemp is a fun and fast paced spy story.  This was an original take on a spy story.  I thought the interactions between Kendall and Rosie were sweet. Kendall is clever and capable (watch out bad guys).  The side characters were engaging and droll.  I enjoyed the twists and turns which kept things lively along with the action.  I loved all the humor.  The author left room for a sequel or series.  I am looking forward to Kendall’s next adventure.

My Thoughts

Accidental Murder by Daryl Wood Gerber is an intriguing tale.  The story is well written with a peppy pace.  The mystery is well plotted. Kayla must stay vigilant if she wants to discover the truth and stay ahead of person trying to kill her (I bet Kayla wishes she had paid more attention to fashion—fake it till you make it). There is danger, nefarious activities, a missing friend, secrets, a conspiracy, cyber talk, and more.  I enjoyed the mystery (I love solving them).  There are hints that will lead to the guilty party (if you pay close attention).  Accidental Murder is a stimulating story that had me up until the wee hours, so I could see how the story concluded.

I'm sorry that I had to cut things short last week. I am finally starting to feel a little better.  It turns out that I was having an allergic reaction to cobalt.  I had been given a shot of B12 by my rheumatologist, and I had started taking B12 to help boost my energy levels.  When itching and a rash developed on all my limbs, I did a little research into B12.  I learned that it contains cobalt which I am allergic to along with other metals.  I wish that it had stated on the bottle that it contained cobalt.  Instead of boosting my energy level, it created a fibromyalgia flare up.  The itching and rash are finally starting to subside (thank heavens).  Please return tomorrow when I am a stop on the Great Escapes Virtual Book Tours for Exposing Lethal Secrets by Deena Alexander.  Don't forget that Amazon Prime Days start today.  There are some great deals (a great time for me to complete my Christmas shopping).  I hope that you have a delightful day.  Take care and Happy Reading!

My Thoughts

Overkill by Sandra Brown has Zach Bridger, a former MVP quarterback, forced to make a difficult decision.  His ex-wife, Rebecca Pratt has been in a coma after a night of overindulgence and abuse with bad boy, Eban Clarke and two of his friends.  Rebecca left all medical decisions to Zach.  Four years have passed since Rebecca became incapacitated and Eban is out of jail early for good behavior (and some arm twisting from his father’s lawyer).  Kate Lennon, a state prosecutor, is determined to put Eban away for a long time.  She can only charge Eban with murder after Rebecca has died.  Kate visits Zach to see if he is willing to remove life support.  Zach acquiesced to Rebecca’s parents four years ago.  The Pratt’s put Rebecca in a long-term care facility where she is being kept alive by machines.  Zach will need to decide what action to take while Eban works to keep his freedom.  

The blurb for Overkill made it sound like an exciting book.   After reading Overkill, I have to wonder if the person who wrote the blurb read the book. The romance element overrode everything else.  There is sexual tension between Zach and Kate.   If you like stories that are steamy (this book is one step away from erotica), then you will enjoy Overkill.  I found there to be a significant amount of foul language, sexual innuendoes, and intimate relations (consensual and not).  I do not like reading about sexual assault.   The ending goes with the rest of the book, but I found it a turn off.  There is a distinct lack of action (except for what was happening in Zach’s pants).  The story rehashed whether or not Zach should take Rebecca off life support.  I understood the dilemma, but I did not need it to be repeated ad nauseum.  The characters lacked development.  I found the characters to be exaggerated.  Eban Clarke is the spoiled rich frat boy who has no intention of growing up and behaving properly.  Zach is the strong, sporty guy who broods and is rude.  Kate is an eager, petite lawyer who wants to get justice (she is the type that men like Zach want to protect).  I wanted suspense and action (there is some near the end).  I thought Overkill was way too long (416 pages).   You can skip chapters and not miss a thing.  Overkill wraps up with a tidy yet steamy ending.  As you can tell, Overkill was not my type of book.  If in doubt, download a sample to judge for yourself.   Overkill is a lackluster tale with the evil Eban, a persistent prosecutor, the robust quarterback, the devout dad, and a coma conundrum.

My Thoughts

The Hidden One by Linda Castillo is the fourteenth novel in the Kate Burkholder series.  It can be read as a standalone as the author provides Kate’s background information for new readers.  You will be missing out though if you do not read this series from the beginning.  Kate travels from Painter’s Mill, Ohio to Belleville, Pennsylvania where elders from an Amish community paid her a visit.  Kate’s first love, Jonas Bowman has been arrested for murder.  Ananias Stoltzfus, the bishop of the community, disappeared eighteen years ago.  His remains were found two months ago in a farmer’s field along with a gun.  The gun belongs to Jonas.  Jonas and Ananias had been at odds at the time of the bishop’s disappearance.  Kate travels to Pennsylvania to see if she can prove Jonas’ innocence. 

I thought The Hidden One was well-written with realistic, developed characters.  I like that we get to learn more about Kate’s past.  I did miss Painter’s Mill and Kate’s significant other, John Tomasetti.  I like how the author portrays the Amish people.  We see them as they are (not sugarcoated).  There are explanations for the way they live and how they do things.  The mystery was intriguing (I love solving the mystery before the reveal) and well-plotted.  It is a cold case which makes it more of a challenge.  I liked all the action in the story.  Someone did not want Kate to find out the truth.  You can tell that they do not know Kate (she is tenacious).  There are clues to help readers solve the crime (if you pay close attention).  People were judging Jonas for his past actions and not the man he is now.  There was one piece of the puzzle that gave me the answer to this clever mystery.  I enjoyed the suspenseful reveal.  The books ending was sweet.  I enjoyed reading The Hidden One. This is one of my favorite books in the series.  I am looking forward to Kate’s next adventure.  The Hidden One is a revealing suspense novel with a confusing cold case, an old love in jail, a beau’s birthday, meaningful memories, perilous incidents, and one curious Kate.

My Thoughts

Six Graves by Angela Marsons is the sixteenth book in the D.I. Kim Stone series.  While you can read Six Graves as a standalone, I believe it is best to read this series in order.  It will allow you to get to know the characters, their backstories, and their relationships.  This series contains realistic, complex characters.  Detective Inspector Kim Stone has had a rough life.  She does not let people get close to her.  Her best friend is her dog, Barney.  Kim may be rough around the edges, but she cares for her team.  She is also dedicated to her job.  Of course, this dedication has led to an escaped killer (Symes) trying to get ahold of her and end her.  Six Graves is well-written with fast pacing.  I like that the chapters are short.  There are chapters from the killer’s point-of-view.  He is a nasty piece of work.  While trying to avoid the killer, Kim and her team are busy with a new case.  In order to keep working, Kim’s boss insists that she have a bodyguard and it is the last person Kim would like to follow her every move.  I had to laugh at some of the lines between Kim and Leanne.  Those two are so much alike (probably why they do not get along).  The mystery is well-plotted and complex.  I was surprised that I was able to solve this one (I loved the challenge).  Angela Marsons gives us multifaceted mysteries that are challenging, dark, and twisty.  Be prepared to stay up late to finish this suspenseful tale.  I do want to warn readers that there is detailed violence and foul language.  Six Graves is full of twists that will have you quickly turning the pages to discover how it ends.  I cannot wait for the next book in this gripping series.  Six Graves is a twisty tale with an escaped slayer, unsolicited shadow, a troublesome team dynamic, a curious crime, and one determined detective.
