Truth of the Matter by Jamie Beck

Truth of the Matter (Potomac Point Book 2) by [Jamie Beck]
Book Summary

Truth of the Matter by Jamie Beck has Anne Sullivan Chase starting over after being married for seventeen years.  Her husband, Robert has found a newer model.  Anne buys her grandmother’s home in Potomac Point which will give herself and her daughter, Katy a fresh start. Anne spent many happy summers with her grandparents in this charming beach community. Her contractor, Dan Foley finds a recipe box when doing demolition in the master bedroom.  It contains some unusual items that belong to her grandmother, Marie who has dementia.  Anne decides to learn more about the mysterious items and how they relate to her grandmother’s past.  Anne is also dealing with a remodel while living in the house, but she wanted to get them settled as soon as possible.  The upheaval has not been good for her sensitive teenage daughter whose anxieties have gotten worse.  Anne needs to find a way to help Katy.  Anne turned to art when she was younger to help express her emotions and she wonders if that would work for herself and Katy.  She has Dan remodel a shed in their backyard into an art studio.  It will allow Anne to get back to painting and for Katy to find her a creative as well as emotional outlet.  Will Anne and Katy find a way to move forward in Potomac Point?

My Thoughts

Truth of the Matter by Jamie Beck is the 3rd novel in the Potomac Point series.  This book can be read on its own.  I thought this story was well-written with the point-of-view alternating between Anne, Katy, and Anne’s grandmother, Marie.  I like the author’s writing style which made the story easy to read.  Anne’s husband asked for a divorce after finding a new woman who has two children.  The family home is sold which allows Anne to buy her beloved grandmother’s home in Potomac Point.  Anne enjoyed the summers she spent with her grandparents in the seaside town.  She knows that herself and her daughter, Katy need a fresh start and where she will not see Richard with his new family.  We get to see how Anne and Katy struggle with the divorce as well as settling into a new town and school.  Katy begins having issues and we see how Anne deals helps Katy.  She is a strong woman who is compassionate and kind.  I liked the mystery surrounding the grandmother, Marie.  There are a couple of items found in an old recipe box that the contractor uncovered.  Marie’s story unfolds over the course of the book.  Truth of the Matter deals with some sensitive topics (drugs and cutting for example). I thought the topics were handled well.  I like that we see Anne rediscover her artistic passion.  There is a lot of soul searching and reflection on Anne’s part as she deals with everything going on in her life.  Truth of the Matter does move at a slower pace, but it goes with the emotional issues in the story (such topics cannot be rushed).  Truth of the Matter is a poignant, multigenerational tale.

First Class Killer by Tonya Kappes

First Class Killer (A Mail Carrier Cozy Mystery #5)
Book Summary

First Class Killer by Tonya Kappes has Bernie Butler a happy grandma.  She loves spending time with her six-month old granddaughter, Clara.  Sugar Creek Gap, Kentucky residents are excited when they hear the old mill has been turned into a bookstore, and Piddy Linn Satterly is the manager.  Bernie is delivering mail at Sugar Creek Gap Nursing Home when she hears that Stella Jane Clark has written a book titled “Beyond Boundaries” and she dedicated it to Bernie’s son, Grady who encouraged her.   The grand opening of the new bookstore is packed as people grab copies of Stella Jane’s book.  Iris Peabody, Bernie’s best friend, is stunned when she finds the affair between her husband and Piddy are in the book.  Grady encouraged Stella Jane to write what she knows which apparently is the secrets of the townspeople.   When Piddy ends up dead, Iris is at the type of the suspect list.  Bernie works with Iris and newly returned Revonda Gail to unravel the crime.
My Thoughts

First Class Killer by Tonya Kappes is the 5th A Mail Carrier Cozy Mystery.  It can be read as a standalone as all the background information a new reader needs to know is included.  This lively tale has Tonya Kappes’ trademark writing style.  It reminds me of talking with an old friend.  I was quickly drawn into this engaging cozy mystery.  Sugar Creek Gap, Kentucky is a cozy Southern town with friendly residents and charming shops.  Bernie Butler just loves her grandbaby.  She talks about her to anyone who will listen and shares pictures that she has taken with her 35 mm camera.  Gertrude, one of the Front Porch ladies, gets news that her daughter, Revonda Gail is coming to town.  She ends up renting Mac’s rental next door to Bernie and the pair become friends.  Revonda Gail has a colorful past much to Bernie’s surprise.  Stella Jane Clark has written “Beyond Boundaries” and thanks Grady Butler, her high school English teacher, for encouraging her to write.  His advice to Stella Jane was to write what she knew, and she certainly did much to many residents’ dismay.  The book has people up in arms including Bernie’s best friend, Iris Peabody.
When a murder occurs, Iris is at the top of Angela Hafley’s suspect list.  Bernie, of course, must investigate.  They use the big write-on/wipe-off board at Iris’s bakery to keep track of clues and suspects.  Revonda Gail gets in on the act.  She is a great addition to the book and the investigation.  I hope the author continues to have her help Bernie.  The Front Porch ladies take a back seat in this book, but we do learn more about Gertrude.  First Class Killer is my favorite book in this series.  The time flew by as I read First Class Killer.  I just love the humor in the story that had me chuckling.  I like that Bernie is an older protagonist.  She is going through menopause and I agree with Bernie when she said that “menopause is awful on the body”.   First Class Killer is a delightful cozy mystery with bawdy book, a bounty of baked good, gossip galore, a grinning grandma, a busy bookstore, a profusion of photographs, and a mystifying murder.

First Class Killer releases on September 26.  It can be pre-ordered from Amazon*.  You can find the other four novels in A Mail Carrier Cozy Mystery series here.  All the book in the series are available on Kindle Unlimited.  You can find Tonya Kappes' other novels here.  Tonya's next release is Gears, Grills, and Guns which releases October 27.  It is the 13th A Camper & Criminals Cozy Mystery.  Thank you for stopping by today and reading my review.  Next time I am featuring Truth of the Matter by Jamie Beck.  It is the 2nd book in Potomac Point series.  I hope you have a magical day.  Take care, be king, and Happy Reading!

Before the Crown by Flora Harding

Before the Crown
Book Summary

Before the Crown by Flora Harding has Princess Elizabeth at Windsor Castle in 1943 with her family.  Two years prior, Princess Elizabeth had seen Prince Philip when he attended an event hosted by her parents.  She was captivated by him and Princess Elizabeth has been writing to him ever since.  They meet again at Christmas when Princess Elizabeth is seventeen and she is hoping that Prince Philip will see her in a new light.  Prince Philip is being urged by his Uncle Dickie to pursue Princess Elizabeth.  It would be a good match for him since he is a prince without a country or an inheritance.  Princess Elizabeth’s parents, though, are not keen on Prince Philip.  Princess Elizabeth will need to stand her ground if she wishes to marry the man she desires.
The four royal pantos were staged during the war after the future Queen and her younger sister were evacuated from Buckingham Palace at the conflict (pictured Elizabeth and Margaret during Aladdin in 1943). The pair stayed at the Royal Lodge, in Windsor, until 1945. Their parents King George VI and Queen Elizabeth stayed in London during the week and returned to them at weekends. The idea to stage a panto came after the two young princesses appeared in a concert with children from the Royal Scho
Queen Elizabeth & Princess Margaret dressed for Aladdin
My Thoughts

Before the Crown by Flora Harding allows readers to get a behind the scenes look at the courtship between Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip.  I found the book easy to read, but I did feel it had slow pacing and it lacked depth.  Before the Crown seemed to be aimed at a younger audience.  The point-of-view alternates between Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip.  We get to see what each one thought and how they felt as the relationship progressed.  We get to see different moments of their relationship.  It is small snippets of time.  I was disappointed that their original meeting was not included.  The story builds up to the wedding, but the actual event is not included.  I found the ending to be dissatisfying.  I like how it made Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip, and the other members of the royal family seem like real people.  Queen Elizabeth is so confident and poised, but she was not always this way.  I liked seeing how she felt about being queen and dealing with her shyness.  There is some mild foul language in the book.  It is wise to remember that this is a fictionalized account of events.  It would have been helpful if the author had added an afterward on what was fact and what was fiction.  Before the Crown is a book that will appeal to those who are fascinated by the royal family and enjoy watching “The Crown”.
People will say we're in love.
Before the Crown is available from Amazon* (plus Barnes & Noble, iBooks, Kobo, Chapter's, Waterstone's).  Thank you for stopping by today.  Tomorrow I am featuring First Class Killer by Tonya Kappes.  It is the 5th A Mail Carrier Cozy Mystery.  I hope that you have a spirited day.  Take care, be kind, and Happy Reading!

Murder in the Bayou Boneyard by Ellen Byron

Murder in the Bayou Boneyard

A Cajun Country Mystery

by Ellen Byron

About Murder in the Bayou Boneyard

Publisher: Crooked Lane Books (September 8, 2020)
Hardcover: 304 pages
ISBN-10: 1643854607
ISBN-13: 978-1643854601
Digital ASIN: B082H3BT6F
Maggie Crozat has the Halloween heebie-jeebies in USA Today bestselling and Agatha Award-winning author Ellen Byron's howlingly funny sixth Cajun Country mystery.

Maggie Crozat, proprietor of a historic Cajun Country B&B, prefers to let the good times roll. But hard times rock her hostelry when a new cell phone app makes it easy for locals to rent their spare rooms to tourists. With October--and Halloween--approaching, she conjures up a witch-crafty marketing scheme to draw visitors to Pelican, Louisiana.

Five local plantation B&Bs host "Pelican's Spooky Past" packages, featuring regional crafts, unique menus, and a pet costume parade. Topping it off, the derelict Dupois cemetery is the suitably sepulchral setting for the spine-chilling play Resurrection of a Spirit. But all the witchcraft has inevitably conjured something: her B&B guests are being terrified out of town by sightings of the legendary rougarou, a cross between a werewolf and vampire.

When, in the Dupois cemetery, someone costumed as a rougarou stumbles onstage during the play--and promptly gives up the ghost, the rougarou mask having been poisoned with strychnine, Maggie is on the case. But as more murders stack up, Maggie fears that Pelican's spooky past has nothing on its bloodcurdling present.

My Thoughts

Murder in the Bayou Boneyard by Ellen Byron is the 6th A Cajun Country Mystery.  Maggie Crozat came up with “Pelican’s Spooky Past” to help draw customers to the local bed-and-breakfasts.  It runs the month of October with various activities including a play in the Dupois cemetery.  The Crozat family are also getting to meet a distant cousin and her family who will be arriving from Canada.  One night they hear a guest screaming outside.  She claims to have seen the legendary Rougarou.  Maggie writes it off as a prank until guests from other bed-and-breakfasts have similar sightings.  Maggie is watching the “Resurrection of a Spirit” in the cemetery when a Rougarou stumbles onto the stage and collapses.  When the mask is removed, it turns out to be Maggie’s new cousin, Susannah MacDowell who is now dead.  Maggie and her family come under suspicion because of a recent altercation with the victim. When a second death occurs, Maggie knows she needs to solve this case quickly before Pelican turns into a ghost town.
Things to Do: Haunted Places and Ghost Locations Around Louisiana | Louisiana Travel
I thought Murder in the Bayou Boneyard was well-written with developed characters.  I always enjoy visiting Pelican, Louisiana.  There is nothing better than to be there at Halloween.  I enjoyed the spooky happening and learning about the Rougarou.  I just loved that this was a double mystery.  There are spooky sightings, a pesky police detective, a chatty parrot, and various suspects.  This was a fun mystery to solve. Murder in the Bayou Boneyard had plenty going on in it which made the story zip by so quickly.  There were some quirky characters including bird who lands Maggie in hot water.  Maggie and Gran are both engaged.  They are going to have a double wedding.  Gran has taken over the wedding planning for the extravaganza.  She is particularly enjoying the cake tastings.  I just loved the screaming doorbell at the Crozat Bed and Breakfast (I want one for my house).  Murder in the Bayou Boneyard can be read as a standalone. I recommend reading this entertaining series in order.  It will allow you to know the characters, their relationships, and the town.  The ending was delightful.  There is a bounty of food in this story (had my stomach growling).  There are recipes at the end for some of the items featured in the book including Ninette’s Holy Trinity Chicken and Cajun Pecan Cookie Fingers.  Murder in the Bayou Boneyard is an entertaining cozy mystery with a creepy cemetery, a wrathful Rougarou, a determined detective, a prolix parrot, multiple murders, a bold bridezilla, and problematic property line polemic.

The Christmas Swap by Melody Carlson

The Christmas Swap
Book Summary

The Christmas Swap by Melody Carlson has Emma Daley spending Christmas with the Landers’ family.  Mr. Landers has swapped his Scottsdale, Arizona home for one in snowy in Breckinridge, Colorado.  Emma is a substitute English teacher and spends the remainder of her time performing at local venues.  She has never seen snow before and is looking forward to a white Christmas.  West Prescott, a musician and in-demand songwriter, got roped into swapping his home for the holidays by his mother.  He was at the airport when he remembered that he left his leather case with the music he is working on back at home.  He pretends to be the caretaker when he is caught by Gillian Landers, Emma’s friend.  West finds himself attracted to the kindly Emma which has him changing his holiday plans.  West and Emma are enjoying each other’s company until Gillian figures out that West is famous and rich.  Gillian decides she wants West for herself which results in misconceptions and mayhem.
Breckenridge, Colorado
My Thoughts

The Christmas Swap by Melody Carlson is a lighthearted Christmas romance novella.  I look forward to reading Melody Carlson’s Christmas novella each year.  There have been some that are just magical (The Christmas Bus, Christmas at Harrington’s, The Christmas Shoppe--links for these books below).  The Christmas Swap is easy to read with steady pacing.  I liked the premise of swapping houses for Christmas. Unfortunately, there are some terrible characters in the story.  The griping, backbiting, and the manipulating did not make this an entertaining Christmas story.  I liked Emma Daley and West Prescott.  West’s mother was a sweet woman who loves her family and is supportive of West.  Mr. Landers was a nice man who has a terrible family.  Gillian is pushy, annoying, and scheming.  Mrs. Landers was irritating with her constant litany of complaints.  I wanted Emma to stand up for herself. I can understand being grateful for being included in the families Christmas plans and wanting to be helpful.  However, there comes a time when you need to quit being a doormat. If I were Emma, I would need a vacation to unwind from the trip with the Landers family. I enjoyed the descriptions of Breckenridge, West’s home, the mountains, and the beauty of snow.  I could imagine Emma staring in wonder when she sees the clean, fresh snow for the very first time.  I missed the feeling of Christmas and humor that is normally present in Ms. Carlson’s Christmas novellas.  The romance was minimal.  Just when I was starting to smile and enjoy what was occurring, the story was over.  The Christmas Swap needed an epilogue.  I hope that Melody Carlson gets her mojo back in time for next years Christmas tale.
The Christmas Swap is available from Amazon* as well as other major booksellers (Barnes & Noble, BAM, Kobo, Chapter's, Waterstone's).  You can find Melody Carlson's other novels here.  My favorite Christmas books of Ms. Carlson's are The Christmas Bus (available through Kindle Unlimited), Christmas at Harrington's, and The Christmas Shoppe.  Thank you for joining me today and reading my review.  Murder in the Bayou Boneyard by Ellen Byron is scheduled for tomorrow as part of the Great Escapes Virtual Book Tour.  It is the 6th A Cajun Country Mystery.  I do hope that you have a tranquil day.  Take care, be kind, and Happy Reading!

The Librarian of Boone's Hollow by Kim Vogel Sawyer

The Librarian of Boone's Hollow
Book Summary

The Librarian of Boone’s Hollow by Kim Vogel Sawyer transports readers back to 1936.  Addie Cowherd is completing her junior year at the University of Kentucky.  Then she learns that she cannot finish the semester because her tuition has not been paid in three months.  Addie discovers that her father lost his job at the bank and has been unable to locate another position.  Addie is determined to help her parents who are currently living in one room at a boarding house.  She is fortunate to get a job as a horseback librarian in Boone’s Hollow as part of Kentucky Pack Horse Project created by Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt.  This small community is wary of outsiders.  Superstitions and grudges go back centuries.  Addie encounters unexpected difficulties because she is boarding with the kindly Nanny Fay.  Addie becomes determined to overcome the locals’ animosity and prejudice.
These librarians would adventure through muddy creeks and snowy hills just to deliver books to the people of these isolated areas.

Emmett Tharp is the first person in Boone’s Hollow to attend and graduate from college.  He is surprised at the difficulty in finding employment and is forced to seek work in the coal mines.  When the director of the library project is forced to relocate, Emmett is fortunate to get the position.  When Addie is unable to deliver any books, Emmett worries that he will have to let her go.  He wonders how they can overcome the residents’ attitude.  Then things begin disappearing from the library and one librarian seems determined to cause difficulty.  Emmett and Addie work together and pray that with God’s help, they will succeed.
"Soon-to-be-Mother Receiving Books From Pack-Horse Librarian" Mill Creek, KY, WPA - This young mountain wife shortly is to become the mother of her first child. The WPA Pack Horse Librarian has for months furnished her with literature on hygiene and the care of infants.
My Thoughts

The Librarian of Boone’s Hollow by Kim Vogel Sawyer is a beautifully written historical novel.  The author captured the time-period and locale.  I felt that the author transported me into the hills of Kentucky where working in the coal mines was the main occupation.  There are some great characters in this story.  Addie Cowherd was fortunate when she was adopted by Fern and Penrose Cowherd.  They raised her to be resilient and to rely on God.  Emmett Tharp is proud to have completed high school and college.  He is a hard worker and a gentleman.  Nanny Fay was my favorite character.  She had such a cheery attitude despite how she is treated and the hardships she endures.  Nanny Fay was a woman of strong faith.  It was fascinating learning about the Kentucky Pack Horse Project.  Eleanor Roosevelt wanted to feed people minds.  Women worked long hours transporting reading materials by horseback or mule to remote farms.  The point-of-view switches between Addie, Emmett, and Bettina (a horseback librarian from Boone’s Hollow).  The author captured the mountain vernacular spoken by Bettina and the other mountain folk.  I like how the Christian message was present through the whole book.  It is wonderful that we are reminded to be kind to others and despite how one may be treated to “kill them with kindness” (a phrase my mother used with me when I was growing up).  I also liked the Scripture passages used in the book that supported the various messages.  The Librarian of Boone’s Hollow was a joy to read.  There are references to physical abuse in the story which, unfortunately, was common.  I like that the romance was not at the forefront.  Some wonderful classic books are mentioned in the story.  My favorite phrase came from Addie who loved books and said, “nothing more magical or as satisfying as a book.”  If you like to read Christian historical novels, then you should read The Librarian of Boone’s Hollow.  The Librarian of Boone’s Hollow is a special Christian tale with beloved books, a stubborn steed, a persistent person, a missing manuscript, surprising superstitions, and a gracious God.
Kentucky pack horse librarian delivers books, 1938.

The Librarian of Boone's Hollow can be obtained from Amazon* as well as other major booksellers (Barnes & Noble, iBooks, Kobo, Waterstone's, Chapter's, Powell's).  You can find Kim Vogel Sawyer's other novels here.  The photos I included today are of actual horseback librarians. To learn more about the Pack Horse Librarians, click here.  Thank you for reading my review today.  I will be back tomorrow with The Christmas Swap by Melody Carlson.  Today is my birthday!  I am off to enjoy dinner out with my mother.  I hope that you have a very special day.  Take care, be kind, and Happy Reading!

Chance of a Lifetime by Jude Devereaux and Tara Sheets: Review & Excerpt

About the Book
In one century she loved him madly, and in another she wants nothing to do with him

In 1844 Ireland, Liam O’Connor, a rogue and a thief, fell madly in love with a squire’s daughter and unwittingly altered the future. Shy and naive Cora McLeod thought Liam was the answer to her prayers. But the angels disagreed and they’ve been waiting for the right moment in time to step in.

Now Liam finds himself reunited with his beloved Cora in Providence Falls, North Carolina. The angels have given Liam a task. He must make sure Cora falls in love with another man—the one she was supposed to marry before Liam interfered. But this Cora is very different from the innocent girl who fell for Liam in the past. She’s a cop and has a confidence and independence he wasn’t expecting. She doesn’t remember Liam or their past lives, nor is she impressed with his attempts to guide her in any way.
Liam wants Cora for himself, but with his soul hanging in the balance, he must choose between a stolen moment in time or an eternity of damnation.

My Thoughts

Chance of a Lifetime by Jude Deveraux and Tara Sheets has Liam O’Connor found wanting on Judgement Day by Samael and Agon.  Liam is getting a second chance.    In 1844 in Kinsley, Ireland, Liam was a thief who stole from the rich to benefit himself, his family, and his accomplices.  He is a charmer who had his pick of the ladies.  But then Liam fell in love with the Squire McLeod’s daughter, Cora.  She was engaged to Finley Walsh, but her heart had other ideas.  Cora picked a different path which forever changed her destiny.  Liam is sent to Providence Falls, North Carolina where Cora current incarnation works as a cop.  She looks just like the Cora that Liam fell in love with over a century and a half ago, but her trust is not easily given.  Liam must get Cora to fall in love with another man within the next three months.  If Liam succeeds in this task, he will go to his eternal reward.  If Liam fails to get Cora to fall for Finn Walsh, then he will spend eternity in one extremely hot locale.
Choose ye this day whom ye will serve. Choose life or death, good or evil. You choose. (Joshua 24:15/Deuteronomy 30:19). God gave you a CHOICE. He gave you a free will to choose salvation or damnation. You were not an X or an O from the beginning of time.
Chance of a Lifetime by Jude Deveraux and Tara Sheets is the first novel in the Providence Falls series.  This book reminds me of Jude Deveraux’s early novels which I just loved (Wishes, A Knight in Shining Armor, Sweet Liar).  I thought the story contained good writing and it moved along at a steady pace. The story has humor, drama, mystery, and, of course, romance.  I liked the characters with my favorite being Liam O’Connor.  He is a thief, a charmer, and a rogue.  I like that Chance of a Lifetime combines the present in Providence Falls with Liam and Cora’s tale from 1844.  The parallels between the two time periods was intriguing.  And let us not forget the two heavenly judges determined to keep Liam on task.  I liked the humor in the story as it added lightness and levity.   I enjoyed reading Chance of a Lifetime until I got to the end and realized the story was incomplete.  I must now wait for the next installment in the Providence Falls series to find out the identity of the killer (I have an idea and want to see if I am right) and Liam’s fate.  With Chance of a Lifetime, Jude Deveraux and Tara Sheets combine history, romance, mystery, and heavenly intervention into one engaging tale.
Excerpt

For an angel as old as Agon, there was nothing new under the sun, or above. After thousands of years studying the human condition, he’d pretty much seen it all. Time didn’t lie. It proved over and over again that human beings were flawed. They led messy lives. They didn’t always learn from their mistakes. And yet, as he swooped into the Department of Destiny and prepared for another day of judging souls, he remained ever the optimist. Because time also had a way of proving that even in the face of all odds, love would prevail.

He landed silently in the misty chamber and slapped his associate on the back. “What’s up, Samael?”
The shorter angel jerked, fumbling for the clipboard in his hands. He gave Agon a scathing look of disapproval. “How many times must I tell you not to sneak up on me like that?”

“Oh, yes. Sorry,” Agon said breezily. “Who’s up next?”

Samael checked the clipboard with a heavy sigh. Pale curls framed his round face. Next to Agon’s imposing figure and dark hair, Samael looked almost boyish. But he’d been in charge of the Department of Destiny for over three hundred years, and he ran it with a stoic sense of justice that made him seem much older. “A grave disappointment, to be sure. The soul of Liam O’Connor stands judgment today.”

“Ah.” Agon shook his head sadly. “Poor Irish ruffian. Such a tragic love story, Liam and the fair Cora.”

“Those two should never have fallen in love,” Samael said with a scowl. “It shattered all of our plans. For over a century! So many destinies were ruined because of it.” He tucked his wings neatly behind his back, then glanced at Agon. “Are you ready to call him in?”

“Yes.” Agon turned toward the wall of mist and pasted an encouraging smile on his face.  “I told you not to do that,” Samael said. “This is serious business. We must reflect the gravity of the situation through our appearance and mannerisms.”

“But humans like smiles,” Agon said. “I thought perhaps it would make him feel more comfortable.”  “His soul hangs in the balance between heaven and hell, and we’re about to judge it,” Samael said flatly. “Who could possibly be comfortable with that?”

“Right.” Agon arranged his features to appear as bleak and unyielding as the surrounding chamber.

“Much better,” Samael said with a nod. Then he raised his hand and called into the void. “I summon the soul of Liam O’Connor.”
Like a cannonball hurled through a cloud, a man shot out of the mist, tumbling head over heels to land before the angels in a tangle of curses and grunts. Unlike other souls who were called to the Department of Destiny, Liam did not rise on unsteady feet, shaking with fear, terrified to stand judgment for his past life’s choices. Instead, he jumped up, slapping at wisps of fog still clinging to his hair and clothing, dark eyes casually scanning the room.

Samael regarded him coolly. “Do you know why you’ve been summoned to the Chamber of Judgment?”
Liam raised a dark brow. “Judgment day, I’d imagine?” For someone who stood on the brink of eternal damnation, he was far too nonchalant. But the angels knew this was part of his act. Liam O’Connor was no stranger to deception.

“We have reviewed your past life and found you wanting,” Samael said. He flicked his hand, and moving images suddenly appeared in the misty wall. Liam picking pockets. Breaking into houses. Liam running through the forest carrying a bag of stolen jewels. A stagecoach in the background with victims shouting after him. A musket ball shattering the branch of a tree near his head. Liam laughing in the face of danger.

“You were a thief,” Samael said. “And you stole from innocent people. Often.”
Nice hat, actually the whole style, casual style... I wonder if Josh would be willing to wear a hat like this ???
“Well…” Liam crossed his arms and leaned against the wall of mist. “Crops were failing. I only stole to help put food on the table. Simple as that.”

“Do not attempt to lie to us,” Samael said coldly. “We can see into your soul, Liam O’Connor, and we know the truth. You enjoyed stealing. You reveled in your life as a thief.”

“Fine.” Liam pushed off the wall and began to pace, dragging the tips of his fingers through the roiling fog. “I did enjoy thieving, and I was good at it, too. I was never any good at farming. But I kept my brother’s family from starving, didn’t I? That has to count for something.”

Samael gazed at him sternly. “You didn’t only steal objects.” He flicked his hand and another image appeared, a sweet, innocent young woman with glossy blond curls and rosy cheeks. She had a round, pretty face with a nose just a little too prominent, and a smile just a little too trusting. She was holding out a rose.

“Cora,” Liam breathed. He stepped closer, but the image of the young woman vanished. “Bring her back!” He grasped at the fog with both hands. “Let me see her again.”
“She wasn’t meant for you, ruffian,” Samael said. “You stole her from her fiancé.”

“But I loved her,” Liam shot back. “And she—”

“You interfered with her destiny,” Samael interrupted. “She was supposed to marry that man, and together they were going to raise a child who would someday help the world.”

Liam scowled. “Her fiancé didn’t deserve her. She wanted me. It was me she loved in the end.”

“Ah, yes,” Samael said icily. “The end.”

Liam glanced away.

“Things ended very badly for her, as you well know,” Samael continued. “For both of you. And now, because of you, Cora’s soul has never found peace. In every new life we’ve given her, she’s afraid to fall in love. She never lives long enough to fulfill her destiny.” He flicked his hand again.

This time, terrible images appeared. Cora as a young nurse, caring for soldiers during an outbreak of scarlet fever…dying in a hospital bed. Cora as a nanny, rushing to save a young child from the path of a runaway horse…dying in the street. Cora working in a factory during WWII…dying in an explosion.

The angels knew Liam wouldn’t understand some of the things he was seeing, but the message was very clear. Cora’s life always ended in tragedy.

“Enough!” Liam flung his hands up, scrubbing his face. “Just tell me my fate. Is it to be hell, then?”

The angels exchanged glances.

“It is true you’ve done much wrong in your life,” Samael said. “But you’ve also done some good. For this reason, we’re going to give you a chance at redemption.”

Liam’s head shot up. He glanced back and forth between the two angels.

“Cora is on earth again in this twenty-first century,” Samael said. “You must make sure she fulfills her true destiny in this life.”

“But…how?”

“There is a man named Finley Walsh. He is her true soul mate—the man she must marry. The man she was destined to marry until you ruined everything. This time, you will see that Cora falls in love with the right man.”

Liam scowled and kicked the floor, displacing wisps of fog. He grumbled under his breath, then glanced up. “Will she remember me?”

“Of course not,” Samael said. “Certainly not as you remember her. The role you play this time will be…much different.”

Liam narrowed his eyes but remained silent.

“You have three months to complete the task,” Samael continued in clipped tones. “We will bestow upon you some knowledge of the current century, but it won’t be an easy transition. If anyone questions your struggles with modern technology, just explain you’re from a very rural town.”

Liam raised his chin. “What if I tell them the truth?”

Samael let out a huff of amusement. “That you’re a transplanted soul from 1844 Ireland? Good luck with that.” He slid the clipboard into a pocket of mist. “Three months, Liam O’Connor. Get Cora to fall in love with Finley. It is imperative that this happens. If you fail—and that includes sleeping with her—you will be sent straight to…”

All the light in the chamber vanished, plunging them into icy darkness.

Hell.” Samael’s voice echoed off the chamber walls like a war drum.

“And if I succeed?” Liam whispered.

The light snapped back on.

“Heaven,” Samael said matter-of-factly. “Now, off you go.” He started to lift his hand.
?
“Wait!” Liam cried. “If Cora’s been on earth living all these different lives, where have I been the whole time?”

“Suspended up here,” Samael said. “Waiting for us to decide if you deserved a chance at redemption. I do hope you are worthy of it. Goodbye, ruffian.” He waved his hand a final time, and a hole opened in the mist beneath Liam’s feet.
They could hear him yelling for a long time as he fell, even after the hole closed.

Agon chuckled. “That was a rather dramatic exit, don’t you think?”

Samael shrugged. “I thought the moment could use a bit of theatrics.”

“And the flickering lights with the echoing voice?” Agon elbowed him in the ribs. “Nice job.”

Samael pressed his lips together and tried to look stern, but Agon could tell he was pleased.

They turned to the wall of mist as the image of Liam appeared. His body floated to earth, landing softly on a bed of leaves on the forest floor. He glanced around in a daze, his lips slowly curving into a smile.
“He always loved the forest,” Agon said wistfully.  “I thought he could use a moment here to reflect on his past, before we send him to work,” Samael said.

Liam’s eyes drooped. His dark lashes fluttered once. Twice. And then he slipped into a deep, dream-filled sleep.

“You didn’t tell him the truth.” Agon turned to Samael. “About the child.”

“He’s not ready to hear that—and neither is she.”

Agon glanced back to the image of Liam’s slumbering form. “Do you think he’ll succeed?”

Samael frowned. “What’s that human saying about a snowball’s chance?”
