Murder at the Pumpkin Pageant by Darci Hannah

 Murder at the Pumpkin Pageant

Book Summary

The latest installment in annah’s delicious Beacon Bakeshop Mystery series set in small-town Beacon Harbor, Michigan, featuring a baker heroine who lives in the local lighthouse with her beloved Newfoundland dog, Wellington.

Lindsey prefers to keep her bakeshop’s Halloween decor light and autumnal, rather than gruesome and ghoulish. But everyone knows her lighthouse home is haunted. Some intrepid teens have even tried to break in to witness the resident ghost themselves. Dreading Halloween night, Lindsey reluctantly allows her influencer and podcaster best friend, Kennedy, to host a live ghost hunting investigation in the lighthouse, conducted by a professional team. Protective of her ghost, Lyndsey is understandably nervous about what they might uncover . . .
The segment is uneventful—until things take a terrifying turn. The team freaks out. As Kennedy joins the mad dash outside, she bumps into what looks like the prankster teens’ creepy clown costume hanging from a tree. But when Lindsey’s dog, Wellington, begins to whine, they make a grim discovery: the clown is no dummy. It’s a corpse.

Now Lindsey and company will need to keep their cool if they want a ghost of a chance to solve the murder—and see another Halloween . . .
My Thoughts

Murder at the Pumpkin Pageant by Darci Hannah is a cute Halloween themed cozy mystery.  We return to Beacon Harbor, Michigan where Lindsey works and lives with her Newfoundland, Wellington.  It is October and the town is decked out for Halloween (my favorite holiday).  Lindsey has been experiencing trouble with pranksters this year.  It seems they want to add a touch of spookiness to the lighthouse décor.  In addition, Lindsey has ghost hunters wanting to shoot an episode inside her haunted lighthouse thanks to her friend and podcaster, Kennedy.  I like the diverse cast of characters that the author has created for this series.  Beacon Harbor is a charming, welcoming town.  I would love to live there (I would want to own the lighthouse, but I would turn it into a bookstore).  The pastries sound delectable as well as the food Lindsey prepares.

Wellington to the rescue!
The mystery was fun to solve.  Lindsey is upset when a teacher she recently met is murdered and left hanging in a tree outside the lighthouse.  Lindsey is not about to let the culprit get away with the crime.  She asks questions and searches for clues.  There are red herrings to misdirect readers from the true culprit.  The mystery can be solved if you pay attention to the clues.  Wellington turns out to be a big help.  I just love Wellington despite his drool.  He is a big, lovable dog.  Murder at the Pumpkin Pageant is the fourth A Beacon Bakeshop Mystery.  It can be read as a standalone for those new to the series.  However, reading the series in order will allow you to get to know the characters.  I like the banter between Lindsey and her group of friends.  You can tell that they are close and know each other well.  I enjoyed the spooky atmosphere in this tale.  Murder at the Pumpkin Pageant is a book that will put you in the mood for Halloween (has me wanting to dig out my Halloween decorations).  Murder at the Pumpkin Pageant is a spooky story with perturbing pranks, a drooling dog, murdered educator, ghost hunters, tasty pastries, firm friends, and a wild ride.

Murder at the Pumpkin Pageant will be out on July 25 and it can be preordered from Amazon*.  You can find the other three A Beacon Bakeshop Mysteries here.  The fifth A Beacon Bakeshop Mystery is Murder at the Blarney Bash which comes out January 23, 2024.  You can follow Darci Hannah on Amazon and you will receive an email when she has a new book release.  Thank you for joining me today.  I will return on Tuesday, July 25 with Murder in the Book Lover's Loft by Ellery Adams.  It is the ninth A Book Retreat Mystery.  I hope that you have an entertaining weekend.  Take care and Happy Reading!

Lindsey Bakewell’s Scrumptious Southern Pecan Cookies

By Darci Hannah

When I was asked to write a Christmas cozy mystery as part of my Beacon Bakeshop Mystery Series I was really excited by the opportunity. I had never written a holiday mystery before, but I loved the possibility of getting to do a deep dive into a Christmas story that was all my own. I’ll admit it here, I love Christmas and all the trappings, from the seasonal books, movies, crowded stores, kitschy decorations, lights, to the food. Especially the food! As a writer and amateur baker who writes about a bakeshop in a lighthouse on the shores of Lake Michigan, I was especially excited to come up with the perfect holiday baked good that would be the theme of my book. It didn’t take me long to realize that Christmas cookies would take the leading role in this book. I mean, who can resist a Christmas cookie? Certainly not Santa. And so, I began the process of gathering some of my favorite cookie recipes to include in my fun, rollicking Christmas cozy mystery, Murder at the Christmas Cookie Bake-Off.

Yes, there is a competitive Christmas cookie bake-off in the book, which inspired me to search high and low through the recipe books for some truly outstanding cookies. Today I’d like to share with you the cookie that my protagonist, Lindsey Bakewell, decides to make for her shot at the Beacon Harbor Christmas Cookie Bake-Off title. The cookie Lindsey chooses is a chewy, buttery pecan cookie topped with a penuche style frosting. My family and friends were “forced” to sample this cookie quite a few times during the making of this book, and their reviews were unanimous. The Southern Pecan cookie was declared over-the-top delicious!

If you’d like to try this cookie, and I suggest that you do, here’s the recipe.

Lindsey’s Scrumptious Southern Pecan Cookies

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. place rack in middle position.

Prep time 20 minutes. Chill time: 30 minutes. Cook time 10 minutes.

Makes 36 cookies

For the dough:

1 cup butter softened

½ cup granulated sugar

½ cup packed brown sugar

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla

2 cups all-purpose flour

½ teaspoon baking soda

¼ teaspoon salt

½ cup finely chopped pecans

36 pecan halves toasted (for top of cookie)

For the frosting:

1 cup packed brown sugar

½ cup cream

1 tablespoon butter

1½ to 2 cups sifted powdered sugar

Divide package of pecans and place half on a baking sheet. Toast pecans in a preheated oven (350 degrees) for 10 to 12 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool. These pecans will be used as a decoration for the tops of the cookies.

Finley chop ½ cup of pecans and set aside.

In the bowl of a mixer beat butter and sugars together until fluffy. Add the egg and vanilla and beat until combined. Add flour, baking soda, and salt and mix until well blended.

Stir in chopped pecans. Cover the cookie dough and put in the refrigerator for 30 minutes or longer.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Shape dough into 1-inch balls and place on parchment lined cookie sheet a couple of inches apart. Bake 10 minutes until set and lightly browned at the edges.

Cool on wire rack.

Sift 1 ½ cups of powdered sugar.

In a medium saucepan, combine brown sugar and cream. Cook over medium heat until mixture boils. Boil for 3 to 4 minutes, stirring constantly.

Remove from heat and stir in butter. When butter is melted stir in 1½ cups of sifted powdered sugar and whisk until smooth. Frosting should look smooth and glossy. If frosting looks too thin, add more powdered sugar. However, keep in mind that the frosting firms up very fast once it cools.

Place cookies close together. Quickly spread each cookie with about 1 tablespoon of warm frosting.

Top each cookie with a toasted pecan.

Let frosting set, then enjoy!

My Thoughts

Lindsey Bakewell owns the Beacon Bakeshop in Beacon Harbor, Michigan.  Christmas is approaching and Lindsey has a vision for a perfect sugar plum holiday.  She has not had luck in the past with achieving a merry holiday.  The bakery is keeping Lindsey hopping especially with all the Christmas orders.  She really needs an assistant baker.  Then Felicity Stewart convinces the town to host a Christmas cookie bake-off with each shop offering samples of their signature cookie.  Lindsey becomes inundated with calls for orders. The bake-off takes a turn when the flirtatious celebrity judge is found dead with crumbs from Lindsey’s signature cookie on him.  The only way to clear herself from suspicion is to find the guilty party and hopefully before Santa comes riding into town.

Murder at the Christmas Cookie Bake-Off by Darci Hannah is the 2nd A Beacon Bakeshop Mystery.  This new cozy can be read as a standalone.  Murder at the Christmas Cookie Bake-Off is a fun lighthearted story with delicious cookies.  The cookie descriptions will have your mouth watering.  The story contains good writing with developed, relatable characters.  I just love Lindsey’s Newfoundland, Wellington.  I loved the idea of Lindsey and Welly having matching coats (I wonder if I can get my dog to wear a coat).  There is humor sprinkled throughout that had me chuckling.  The author captured Michigan in the winter.  Beacon Harbor sounds like a charming small town.  I love Lindsey’s lighthouse with its resident ghost.  I enjoy the paranormal element and would actually like more of it.  The mystery was well plotted with several suspects, a red herring, and good clues.  It depends on your sleuthing ability on when you will solve this whodunit. Murder at the Christmas Cookie Bake-Off is a cute cozy that will put you in the mood for the holidays.  There are cookie recipes at the end for several of the tasty treats featured in the book.  Murder at the Christmas Cookie Bake-Off is a merry tale with cookie trickeries, dazzling lighthouse lighting, a bevy of baking, an affable assistant baker, delectable cookies, and a spectral captain.

Murder at the Christmas Cookie Bake-Off is available from AmazonB & NBAM, and 2 Dandelions Bookstore.  The first A Beacon Bakeshop Mystery is Murder at the Beacon Bakeshop.  You can follow Darci Hannah on Amazon so you can receive an update when she has a new release.  Now for the GIVEAWAY!  To win a copy of Murder at the Christmas Cookie Bake-Off  along with a little something extra (cookie themed), you just need to a leave a comment (that's it).  Please make sure to leave your email address so I can contact you if you win.  Contest is open to those in the U.S. Only (sorry).  Giveaway ends on October 12 at 11:59 p.m.  Good Luck!  Thank you for visiting today.  Tomorrow I am featuring A Season of Change by Beth Wiseman.  It is the 3rd story in The Amish Inn Novels.  I hope you have a merry day.  I am off to work on my outdoor Halloween display.  I have a zombie to bury and a skeleton to dress (I got it a great costume).  Take care, be kind, and Happy Reading!

Murder at the Beacon Bakeshop by Darci Hannah

Book Summary

Murder at the Beacon Bakeshop by Darci Hannah has Lindsey Bakewell getting a fresh start in Beacon Harbor, Michigan.  After catching her fiancé in a compromising position in his office with his pastry chef, Lindsey decides it is time to pursue her dream.  She gives up her job in finance and purchases a rundown lighthouse in Beacon Harbor where she spent happy times as a child with her grandparents.  Lindsey is going to open The Beacon Bakeshop and Café in the lighthouse while living above with her Newfoundland, Wellington.  While most of the town is happy to see the lighthouse getting a revival, Fiona Dickel is not.  She threatens to ruin Lindsey’s Memorial Day weekend grand opening.  The bakery opens to a crowd with Fiona and her group protesting outside. Unfortunately, Lindsey’s ex-fiancé, Jeffery Plank and his girlfriend, Mia Long decide to crash the party intent upon revenge.  Mia begins tossing pastries and Fiona’s group gets in on the action.  Mia ends up collapsing and dies before reaching the hospital.  Someone poisoned Mia and Lindsey is the police’s prime suspect.  Lindsey with help from her friends begins investigating so they can prove her innocence.

My Thoughts

Murder at the Beacon Bakeshop by Darci Hannah is the debut of A Beacon Bakeshop Mystery series.  I thought this was a delightful story.  It is well-written with developed characters.  The author took the time to introduce us to Lindsey Bakewell and her dog, Wellington.  After catching her fiancé with his pastry chef, Lindsey is given the advice to follow her dream.  Thankfully, Lindsey invested well and has a solid portfolio.  It allows her to purchase a rundown lighthouse in Beacon Harbor, Michigan that she renovates into living quarters, bakery, and café.   Lindsey is smart, loyal, independent, and has a good heart.  She is also an excellent baker.  I love Wellington.  He is a large, fun, friendly dog.  We are introduced to the charming town of Beacon Harbor and its friendly (most of them) residents.  Unfortunately, Fiona Dickel is not happy with Lindsey purchasing a historical landmark and improving its appearance.   The mystery was entertaining.  A bruhaha on opening day leads to the death of Lindsey’s ex-fiancé’s lover.  Lindsey finds herself at the top of the suspect list and her bakery closed.  She has no choice but to investigate.  With help from her bestie, Kennedy Kapoor and her new friends, Lindsey asks questions, does research, and looks for clues.  There are several good suspects in this whodunit along with subtle clues (you have to pay close attention to details to find some of them).  I enjoyed piecing together the clues and figuring out who is behind the poisoning.  There is action that kept the book moving rapidly forward toward the conclusion.  The conclusion was eventful and complete.  There is a hint of paranormal in the story.  It is said that the ghost of Captain Willy Riggs haunts the lighthouse.  I enjoyed the ghost legends and how it was incorporated into the story.  Lindsey and her neighbor, Rory Campbell hit it off from their first meeting.  He asks her out to dinner right away.  I did feel there was a wee bit too much romance (for a cozy mystery) and that it was happening too fast (I prefer the romance to play out slowly over the course of the series).  Murder at the Beacon Bakeshop is a delightful cozy mystery with delectable donuts, a wandering Wellington, an enticing neighbor, a fashionista friend, a guileful ghost, and a busy baker.

Murder at the Beacon Bakeshop is available from Amazon*.  The next A Beacon Bakeshop Mystery is Murder at the Christmas Cookie Bake-Off which publishes September 28.  I am looking forward to reading it.  Thank you for joining me today.  I will be back tomorrow with The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner.  For now, I am off to do a little work outside. I hope that you have a cheerful day.  Take care, be kind, and Happy Reading!
