Baby Protection Mission by Laura Scott

Baby Protection Mission

Book Summary

When a baby is targeted,

can a K-9 team keep him safe?

Now Officer Ashley Hanson and her K-9 partner are on the case, and it’s up to them to track down the assailant and keep Cade and his nephew from harm. But as the suspect list grows and the attacks escalate, will they bring a kidnapper to justice…before he strikes again?

From Love Inspired Suspense: Courage. Danger. Faith.

My Thoughts

Baby Protection Mission by Laura Scott starts off with a bang when Cade McNeil’s sister is kidnapped. I liked the characters in the story.  I enjoyed getting to know Abbey and Cade.  I especially liked Abbey’s K9 partner, Ozzy.  There is an abundance of action and suspense along with a touch of romance.  There are two mysteries as they search for Cade’s sister and the Rocky Mountain Killer.  While one mystery is resolved, the other will continue in Her Duty Bound Defender.  Faith is nicely woven into the story.  I liked seeing Abbey grow stronger in her faith.  I appreciated that Baby Protection Mission is a clean story (no foul language or intimate relations).  I enjoyed reading the engaging debut of Mountain Country K-9 Unit series.  I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Baby Protection Mission is available from Amazon*.  The next book in the Mountain Country K-9 Unit series is Her Duty Bound Defender by Sharee Stover which will be out on April 23.  You can find the list of the other books in the Mountain Country K-9 Unit series here.  Thank you for stopping by today.  Tomorrow I am sharing my thoughts on Three Fudges and a Baby by Nancy Coco.  I hope that you have an enjoyable day.  Take care and Happy Reading!

Amish Holiday Vendetta by Laura Scott

 Amish Holiday Vendetta
Book Summary

An Amish widow. An Englischer with a past.

Who’s the real target this Christmas?

Attacked in her barn just before Christmas, Amish quilter Elizabeth Walton doesn’t know why someone wants to harm her. But when gunfire narrowly misses Elizabeth and furniture maker David McKay, the
Englischer fears his past has put them both in the crosshairs. David’s determined to protect the pretty widow…but is his presence the real danger? Or is there another motive behind the deadly threats?
My Thoughts

Amish Holiday Vendetta by Laura Scott is a page turner.  I was quickly drawn into the story.  I liked the main characters, Elizabeth Walton and David McKay.  They are characters that you will root for.  There is mystery and suspense.  I enjoyed all the action (you never knew what would happen next) which kept the story lively.  There is romance (naturally).  Elizabeth and David grow close during this challenging time in their lives.  Elizabeth is a widow who did not have a happy marriage.  The last thing Elizabeth wants is to marry again.  Elizabeth works hard making and selling her beautiful quilts as well as doing the chores around the house and taking care of her deceased husband’s mother (who likes to be waited on).  David is a woodworker who lives like the Amish (without modern amenities), but he is an Englisher.  I like that we get to catch up with the characters (Shauna and Liam) from Hiding in Plain Sight.  Amish Holiday Vendetta can be read as a standalone, but you are missing out on a captivating tale.  Elizabeth’s faith is strong while David’s faith is new.  They both trust God to get them through the difficulty.  I like that they turned to God for assistance in their time of need (instead of taking matters into their own hands).  I loved the ending which left me smiling.  The author combined mystery, suspense, and romance into one fetching tale.  Amish Holiday Vendetta is an engaging story with a demanding mother-in-law, a barn break in, perilous shots, a strongminded suitor, a caring community, and a dreadful discovery.

Amish Holiday Vendetta is available from Amazon*.  Laura Scott has Deadly Amish Abduction coming out on May 23, 2023 (I cannot wait to read it).  You can find Laura Scott's other novels here. Thank you for stopping by today.  I cannot believe it is the last day of November.  The month went by swiftly.  I need to start working on my Christmas tree.  Tomorrow I will share my thoughts on Coming Home by Shelley Shepard Gray.  It is the debut of A Woodland Park Firefighters Romances.  I hope you have a happy day.  Take care and Happy Reading!

Hiding in Plain Sight by Laura Scott

 Hiding in Plain Sight

Book Summary

Seeking refuge in Amish country…

in order to stay alive

Fleeing to her uncle’s home is Shauna McKay’s only option after her mother’s brutally murdered and the killer’s sights set on her. Local sheriff Liam Harland’s convinced hiding Shauna in his cousin’s Amish community will shield her. But when an Amish woman who looks like Shauna is attacked, it’s clear nobody in this peaceful community is safe…unless Liam and Shauna can stop the culprit’s murderous plan.
My Thoughts

Hiding in Plain Sight by Laura Scott is a captivating romantic suspense.  I enjoyed getting to know Shaunna, Liam, David, and Elizabeth.  I thought Hiding in Plain Sight was well-written with steady pacing.  I loved all the action that propelled the story quickly to its conclusion.  I enjoyed the suspense and intrigue.  The story captured my attention.  I wanted to know who was behind the attacks on Shauna.  I thought the title of the book was spot on.  Hiding in Plain Sight is a Christian story with no foul language or intimate situations (just a couple of kisses).  Love, faith, courage, and family are the main themes.  I liked Shauna’s faith journey.  She needed to learn to trust in God and know He is always with us.  I am glad the author included an epilogue that nicely wrapped up the book.  Hiding in Plain Sight is a gripping tale with a murdered mother, disquieting gunshots, a car conundrum, a striking sheriff, a concerned uncle, accommodating Amish, an astounding discovery, and finding faith.

Hiding in Plain Sight will be out on August 23, and it can be preordered from Amazon*.  Laura Scott has Amish Holiday Vendetta coming out on November 29 which features Elizabeth and David. You can find Laura Scott's other novels here.  I appreciate you joining me today and reading my latest book review.  I will return on Monday with The Witches of Moonshyne Manor by Bianca Marais.  I hope that you have a fun weekend (or a relaxing one if that is what you need).  I am venturing into our shed to locate a couple of items.  It is packed to the gills until I finish painting the walls (I am still filling in holes--I keep finding more holes or nails that have yet to be removed).  Take care, stay cool, and Happy Reading!

Tailing Trouble by Laura Scott

Tailing Trouble
Book Summary

Wisconsin veterinarian Ally Winter must solve a well-heeled young woman's a-paw-ling murder in USA Today bestselling author Laura Scott's second Furry Friends mystery.

Thirty-something veterinarian Ally Winter has found a new "leash" on life since she moved back to her hometown of Willow Bluff, Wisconsin. But when she takes Domino, the black standard poodle she's boarding for the weekend, for a sunny September stroll along the shore of Lake Michigan, the diminutive dog dashes off, only to return with a single, polka-dotted, high-heeled shoe. Retracing Domino's paw prints back to a weeping willow tree, they find the other shoe. It's still on the foot of 20-year-old Pricilla Green--lying dead beneath the willow, with a silk scarf knotted tightly around her neck.

Willow Bluff's finest--and handsomest--detective, Noah Jorgenson, is soon on the tail of the killer. But he has another worry on his mind when Ally's grandfather, a lifelong true-crime buff, starts to suspect that the recent burglary of a local big-box store may have some connection to Pricilla's murder. Noah cautions Ally to keep Gramps well away from the homicide investigation, but the old dog is drawn to danger like a puppy is to a squeaky ball.

The fur flies as Ally, Noah, Gramps, and Domino race the clock to fetch the felon. It will take all of their canine canniness to comb out the twists and curls in this wild and woolly case. And if they fail, they won't live to go walkies again.
My Thoughts

Dr. Ally Winter, a veterinarian in Willow Bluff, Wisconsin, is walking Domino, a dog who is boarding with her, on the beach.  The dog manages to escape Ally and soon returns with a shoe that she recognizes.  Ally investigates and finds Pricilla Green dead under a willow.  Ally’s grandfather loves true crime, and he cannot wait to sink his teeth into the case.  Detective Noah Jorgenson, though, does not want Ally or Gramps’s help and warns them to keep their prying noses out of his case.  Gramps has no intention of being sidelined.  He believes that a rash of recent robberies ties in with Pricilla’s death.  Ally and Gramps work to unravel the clues and rope a killer.  The murderer does not wish to be caught and sets out to eliminate the snoopy sleuths.  Can Ally and Gramps catch the conniving killer, or will they end up the next victims?

Tailing Trouble by Laura Scott is the second book in A Furry Friends MysteriesTailing Trouble can be read as a standalone if you have not read Dogged by Death.  The story has likeable characters especially Gramps.  He is a hoot.  I like the premise of a veterinarian who investigates crimes with her grandfather.  However, I felt the story was bogged down with the day-to-day details of Ally’s life.  Her visits to Legacy House to visit Gramps, partaking of the meals at Legacy House (or not because she does not want to gain too much weight), walking the dogs, taking Gramps to library, etc.  I understand that she needs to walk the dogs, but the readers do not need to know each and every time that she does it.  It becomes tedious after a while.  Ally manages to get a patient or two. Ally is treating a cat and it scratches her.  This makes Ally look like a bad vet.  A good vet knows how to hold a cat properly to avoid getting scratched or bitten (at least the ones I have gone to know how to hold a cat properly).  She has two dogs fighting in the clinic which results in her losing a client shows us again that she is not the best vet.  I wish the author had showed Ally in a more professional light.  She does manage to take her boarder dog, Domino in hand.  I did find the interactions between Noah and Ally to be awkward and their dialogue stilted.  The mystery was interesting. I wish there had been more investigation and less wild speculation (Gramps).  I tired of Noah telling Ally and Gramps to stay out of the investigation.  I like how everything tied together in the end, though, the ending was rushed.  I am curious as to how Ally can keep her practice going with so few patients.  She tells us often that she does not have patients (very true) and cannot afford a receptionist or assistant.  I am curious how she can pay the bills with the one to two patients a week.  Of course, if Ally’s business were not slow, she would not have time to take Gramps to lunch, the library, visit Legacy House, and solve crimes.   This series still needs work (a few tweaks).  Tailing Trouble is a lighthearted tale with a playful poodle, a rash of robberies, a dashing detective, an eager elder, flavorful feasts, and a curious killing.

Tailing Trouble publishes Tuesday, January 11 and it is available from Amazon*.  The first novel in A Furry Friends Mystery series is Dogged by Death.  You can follow Laura Scott on Amazon so you can receive updates when she releases a new book.  Thank you for stopping by today.  Tomorrow I am featuring Crimes and Cover by Amanda Flower.  It is the fifth A Magical Bookshop Mystery.  I hope that you have a joyful day.  Take care, stay safe, and Happy Reading!

Dogged by Death by Laura Scott

 Dogged by Death
Book Summary

In Laura Scott's Furry Friends series debut, veterinarian Ally Winter must collar the killer of a shifty lawyer. Does the dead man's dog know who committed the arf-ul crime?

Ally Winter is going through a ruff patch. The thirty-something veterinarian lost her fiancé, her clinic, and her savings in rapid succession. So when Ally's grandfather undergoes hip replacement surgery, she moves back to Willow Bluff, Wisconsin, to care for him. She arrives home, tail between her legs, only to find sleazy lawyer Marty Shawlin murdered in his home office. And the only witness was Marty's faithful boxer, Roxy.

Quick as a greyhound, Noah Jorgensen is on the case. The good news is, he's the best detective around. The bad news, at least the way Ally sees it, is that Noah is still just as fetching as he was back in high school. He also just happens to have witnessed every embarrassing incident that befell accident-prone Ally--including the fire-ant attack that set tongues wagging and won her the unshakable nickname Hot Pants.

Meanwhile, true-crime aficionado Gramps fancies himself a sleuth, and he is doggedly determined to sniff out the culprit himself...with Ally's reluctant help, of course. Ally has no choice but to team up with Noah--and the irrepressible Roxy--to solve the case while keeping Gramps on a short leash.

Ally had better learn some new tricks, lickety-split. Because if she can't bring the killer to heel, she won't just be playing dead.
My Thoughts

Dogged by Death by Laura Scott has Ally Winter moving to Willow Bluff, Wisconsin to be near her grandfather, Oscar after some big upheavals in her life.  Ally buys out a local veterinary practice and settles into her new life.  Ally is hired by Marty Shawlin to walk his dog, Roxy.  She arrives the first day to find Roxy barking frantically and Marty dead on the floor.  Detective Noah Jorgensen, Ally’s old high school crush, is on the case.  Gramps, a true crime junkie, is eager to do some investigating of his own with help from Ally, of course (he has trouble getting around since his hip replacement surgery).  The killer is not playing games and tries to deter Ally.   Gramps is even more determined to find the guilty party.

Dogged by Death is the debut of A Furry Friends Mystery series.  I enjoyed this entertaining new cozy mystery.  I laughed often while reading it.  Ally Winter is a solid protagonist and I just love Gramps.  He is a hoot.  Roxy, Marty Shawlin’s dog, is smart and such a sweetie.  The secondary characters are a great addition.  The Willow Bluff Widows who live with Gramps at Willow Bluff Legacy House, an assisted living facility, nicely round out the cast along with Noah Jorgensen.  I am glad the author took the time to establish the characters (characters can make or break a series). The mystery was fun to follow thanks to Gramps and Ally.  I did feel that we really do not get to know the suspects.  I understand why they are suspects, but the emotions were lacking.  Readers should have no problem solving the whodunit before the reveal.  There is repetition of case details and I wish the whodunit had been more of a challenge.  I love how Ally and Gramps would “share” their information with Noah.  Noah was always finding them in compromising situations.  He has a facial twitch that was getting out of control by the end of the investigation (he found Gramps to be a challenge).  Dogged by Death moved along at a quick pace with good dialogue and plenty of humor.  I am looking forward to Tailing Trouble when it comes out next year.  Dogged by Death is a tail wager with a septuagenarian sleuth, a benevolent veterinarian, willing widows, a bright boxer, an enduring detective, and a cruel killer.

Dogged by Death is available from Amazon*.  The next A Furry Friends Mystery is Tailing Trouble which publishes January 11, 2022.  You can find Laura Scott's other novels here.  Thank you for stopping by today.  Tomorrow I am sharing my thoughts on A Spell for Trouble by Esme Addison.  It is the first An Enchanted Bay Mystery.  I hope that you have a gleeful day.  Take care, be kind, and Happy Reading!

Q and A with Laura Scott

Did you always want to write romance novels?

LS: Yes! I wrote my first romance novel when I was 16 years old and submitted it to Harlequin. They turned me down which in hindsight was a very good thing as it was awful. I kept going though, and honed my craft. When I sold my first book to Harlequin I was so excited! It was like a dream come true. I have been reading Harlequin for so long, it's an honor to be writing for them.

Share in your own words what it means to experience That Harlequin Feeling.

LS: For me, its like being swept into a great adventure! I read across all lines, but the romantic suspense remains my favorite. I love the action, suspense, mystery and of course the romance! When I open a Harlequin novel I can leave all my day to day worries behind. These days with the stress of Covid-19 and everything else going on, that's twice as important.

Falsely Accused (FBI: Special Crimes Unit Book 5) by [Shirlee McCoy]
Can you share a recent book that you have read that you would like to recommend?

LS: I have just finished reading FalselyAccused by Shirlee McCoy. This is one of the books in her FBI Special Crimes Unit and as always Shirlee crafts a great story that has you rooting for the characters all the way to the end! I cannot wait for her next book to come out.
About Copycat Killer

Murder strikes close to home for a new K-9 unit in Brooklyn. When a double homicide is strikingly familiar to a twenty-year-old cold case, Detective Nate Slater is rattled by the parallels. With a child as the only witness, he and his K-9 partner must protect little Lucy and her aunt, Willow Emery. Nate’s rough past means he always keeps an emotional distance…but in this case getting closer is the only way they’ll all survive.
German Shepherd K9 Unit
My Thoughts

Copycat Killer by Laura Scott has Willow Emery finding her brother and sister-in-law dead with their toddler, Lucy crying nearby.  The killings are identical to a crime that occurred twenty years prior.  Detective Nate Slater and his K-9 partner, Murphy take the traumatized pair home to find Willow’s apartment ransacked.  Are the crimes tied together?  Slater works to keep Willow and Lucy safe while searching for the elusive criminal.  As Slater spends time with Willow, he begins to fall for her.  Slater knows, though, that marriage and family are not in his future.  Can Willow change his mind?  Copycat Killer is the first book in True Blue K-9 Unit:  Brooklyn series. We are introduced to the staff of the newly formed Brooklyn K-9 Unit.  Detective Nate Slater is nearby when Willow calls 9-1-1.  He is surprised at the similarities to a 20-year-old cold case where the killer left 4-year-old Penelope McGregor as the only witness.  Her older brother, Bradley was at a sleepover.  Bradley is now a K-9 officer with their unit and Penelope is the desk clerk.  I thought Copycat Killer was a suspenseful story.  There is action that kept the book moving forward at a fast pace.  I liked the camaraderie between the members of the K-9 unit and how sweet they were to Lucy.  I, of course, loved following the investigation as they searched for the guilty party.  The romance is sweet and natural.  I was amazed at the talents of the K-9 dogs.  They have amazing sniffers.  I was disappointed that the murder investigation is not wrapped up in Copycat Killer.  I hope we get the answers in the next True Blue K-9 Unit:  Brooklyn novel.  I especially enjoyed Willow’s strong faith and how she shared it with Lucy and Nate.  Copycat Killer is an intriguing suspense with clever canines, a crazed killer, a cute kid, an affectionate aunt and determined detectives.
K-9
Excerpt from Copycat Killer

Nate suddenly heard a panicked shout. “Help! Police! Help!”

What in the world? He turned to look over his shoulder. A young man in a baseball cap and a Yankees jersey was waving his arms in a frantic attempt to get his attention.

“Help! Someone is being attacked!”
He hesitated, unwilling to leave Willow and Lucy there alone. Willow was still chatting with Angela, the two women cooing over Lucy, so he made a split-second decision to respond. “Willow? Stay here. I’ll be right back. Come, Murphy.”  “This way!” The Yankees fan turned and disappeared around the corner, clearly expecting Nate and Murphy to follow.

Nate broke into a jog, dodging pedestrians while keeping Murphy close to his side. He listened intently but didn’t hear any sounds indicating an attack. He hoped he wasn’t going to be too late. As they turned the corner, he raked his gaze over the area, searching for anything suspicious. There was no obvious sign of an attack, but the Yankees fan was still several paces ahead. “Hurry! Over here! In the alley!”

Nate darted around a group of tourists. He came to the spot where the Yankees fan had been, in front of a long narrow alley, but the guy was gone. He’d vanished like some sort of magician’s trick.  There was no attack. His gut clenched with fear. Willow! Lucy!
Narrow alley by Giancarlo Gallo
He whirled around and instantly ran back to the café. The sidewalk seemed to stretch forever.  He’d followed the stupid Yankees fan farther than he’d realized.  And it had been nothing but a clever ploy to get him and Murphy out of the way. No! How could he have been so gullible? He quickened his pace, unable to bear the thought of something happening to Willow and Lucy.

He wheeled around the corner, his heart lodged in his throat. Even more people crowded the sidewalks now. Lucy was crying, loud screeching sobs. “Aunt Willow! Aunt Willow! Come back!” A pedestrian got in his way and he nearly plowed the guy over in his haste to reach Willow and Lucy.

“No! Stop!” Willow’s voice was muffled. He caught a glimpse of someone dressed in black with a hat pulled low over his forehead dragging her toward a black sedan double-parked a few spots up from the café.

“Stop! Police!” He shouted as loud as he could to be heard above the din. Realizing he might be too late, he reached down and released Murphy’s leash. “Get him, Murphy. Get him!” Murphy took off running. Like a racehorse, he closed the gap between him and Willow faster than Nate ever could.
The man with the hat must have realized the same thing, because he abruptly pushed Willow toward Murphy, then spun and took off running in the opposite direction.  It all happened like a scene unfolding in slow motion. Willow tripped over Murphy. His partner yelped as the two of them tangled together. Then Willow hit the pavement with a thud. Lucy was still crying, her stroller several feet away from Willow and Murphy.

“Willow! Are you okay?” He finally caught up to them, crouching down to check Willow and his partner. Murphy had managed to free himself from Willow. He was up on his feet, staring in the direction the intruder had gone. “Get him,” Nate repeated. He didn’t like sending his partner off alone, but he couldn’t leave Willow and Lucy.
Wow. I don't really like the picture, but you've GOTTA appreciate the talent to catch this shot.
The yellow Lab took off, trotting fast, his nose periodically going to the ground.  Murphy could track just about anything, but he wasn’t trained to go into subway stations without Nate. A fact he hoped the assailant didn’t know, as there was a subway entrance at the opposite end of the block.

“What happened?” He helped Willow to her feet.  “He—came out of nowhere.” Her voice was shaky, her hands trembling. Her palms were scraped and bleeding, but she didn’t seem to care. “I didn’t notice until he grabbed me.”

“Shh, it’s okay.” He caught her in his arms for a quick hug, then turned toward Lucy. Some instinct had him lifting the girl from her stroller and handing her over to Willow. They clung to each other, much the way they had outside the scene of the Emery murders.
Shallow focus photo of black Mercedes Benz sedan Cars
His gaze fell on the license plate of the black sedan abandoned by the would-be kidnapper. He quickly memorized the plate number, hoping it would be a clue as to who’d attacked Willow. A sharp dog bark caught his attention. His heart was hammering, and he desperately wanted to go after Murphy. What if the assailant tried to hurt him? Nate took one step forward, then another, but stopped.

He couldn’t leave Willow. He had to trust in his partner’s training. The K-9 would soon return.  Murphy came running through the crowd of onlookers, returning to Nate’s side. “Murph!” He went down to his knee and wrapped his arms around his partner. From what he could tell, Mur-phy wasn’t hurt. Unfortunately, the assailant had gotten away.
