Excerpt

Avery Taylor clutched her sleeping daughter tighter, her fight-or-flight instincts begging her to do anything other than stand there, frozen, staring down the two masked gunmen blocking her from entering her home. “Please, I…”

But what could she say? Had she stumbled upon a home invasion? She couldn’t imagine having anything either of them could possibly want. She lived off the beaten path. The small but cozy two-story bungalow she’d inherited from her grandfather sat alone on a cul-de-sac at the end of a long, winding mountain road. And she worked from home as a medical transcriptionist, supplementing her income with her inheritance to make ends meet. Well, whatever they wanted, they could have it, as long as they left her and her four-year-old, Liliana, alone. She opened her mouth to say as much.

The taller of the two lifted his weapon, his hand rock steady.

She could only assume he’d done this before.

“Where’s Tristan McAvoy?” he demanded.

Her mouth snapped right back closed again. Once she recovered enough to try to answer, her voice shook before she could utter more than a grunt, and she worked to steady it. Although she didn’t know why she bothered. It was clear she was terrified, and even more so now that she knew what they wanted…because she couldn’t give it to them. “I don’t know where Tristan is. I haven’t seen him in almost five years.”

Since he’d walked out on her and never looked back, despite her numerous attempts to get in touch with him and tell him he was going to be a father. He’d been her best friend, her love, her future, and then he’d been gone.

Her arms began to tremble beneath Liliana’s weight, and Avery hefted her up higher so the little girl’s head rested more comfortably on her shoulder. The last thing she needed was Lily waking to this mess. They’d attended a church festival that evening, and her daughter had passed out on the way home. It was a good thing Lily was a heavy sleeper.

The shorter man, who outweighed her by a good hundred pounds of pure muscle, gestured toward the front door with his weapon. “Get inside.”

She hesitated.

“Look, Avery…”

The fact that he knew her name and had associated her with Tristan sent a chill racing up her spine, despite the heat of the summer night. If they knew all that, she had to figure they knew Lily was Tristan’s daughter as well, even if Tristan didn’t know. But how had they found out? True, she’d listed him as Lily’s father on her birth certificate, but why would this stranger have access to that?

“All you have to do is tell us where to find McAvoy.” The man’s easy shrug belied the tension in his posture. “Once we have him, we’ll let you and his kid go. Easy enough?”

It would be if she believed him, and if she had any clue where to find Tristan, but she wasn’t buying it. Then again, they did have on ski masks, which gave her some hope that they planned to let her go. If not, they’d have no reason to conceal their identities. Of course, she couldn’t give them what they wanted. If she knew how to get ahold of Tristan, he’d know about his daughter.

An image of him flashed in her mind—his shaggy brown hair that just brushed his collar and always seemed in need of a trim, a smile that could melt her heart in an instant, his brilliant blue eyes that used to cage hers and fill her with hope for their future together. A hope that died when he walked away with promises to return once he’d gotten his head on straight. An empty promise, as it turned out.

She’d wanted to talk to him after he’d left, to tell him he was going to be a dad instead of imparting the news via voicemail, email or text. She’d wanted to gauge his reaction, so she’d simply asked him to call her back. Time and time again. And he hadn’t. Not once. So, he’d never learned about his daughter. But that wasn’t really fair. He’d left after his parents had been murdered, bitter and grief-stricken and so filled with anger she hadn’t known what to do for him. Still, he could have answered at least one of her messages.

Focus, Avery.

She weighed her options. She could make a run for the car, where she’d left the doors standing open and her bags inside in hopes of retrieving them after she’d gotten Lily into bed, but she’d never outrun a bullet if these men intended to shoot her. Then again, they couldn’t get information from her if she was dead. But they could incapacitate her. How could she risk leaving Liliana alone with these monsters? She couldn’t. Which left her no choice but to do as they’d instructed.

Lily’s weight was becoming a strain on her back and shoulders, and she didn’t want to set her down on the stone walkway and risk waking her. But she did have to put her down. If it came down to it, she couldn’t fight with Liliana in her arms. What did it matter if she went inside with them anyway? It wasn’t like there was any chance of someone driving past to notice what was happening or being close enough to hear her screams. The secluded home she’d grown up in, that she’d always viewed as so peaceful and serene, a safe haven tucked against the side of the mountain, surrounded by fields and wildflowers, now seemed nothing but isolated. She’d never felt so frightened and alone, even after Tristan had left and her grandfather had passed away.

But if she could get inside, if she could get to her grandfather’s hunting rifle hanging above the mantel, maybe she’d stand a chance of defending herself and her daughter.

A Killer's Target by Dana R. Lynn

A Killer's Target
Book Summary

Taking refuge in Amish country

After nearly being kidnapped at a crime scene, forensic photographer Leila Britton discovers the serial killer who murdered her twin sister has resurfaced—with Leila as his next intended victim. But danger follows them relentlessly, forcing them to seek refuge deep in Amish country. However safety is fleeting, and the killer seems to know every step she takes. Can Leila and Brett unmask the killer before he fulfills his ultimate goal—and Leila runs out of places to hide?
My Thoughts

A Killer’s Target by Dana R. Lynn grabbed my attention from the very first page and kept me up late, eagerly flipping pages to see how everything would unfold. The action begins right away and carries strong momentum throughout the story, creating a fast-paced blend of danger, suspense, and mystery. I enjoyed watching Leila Britton and Brett Talbot work together to uncover the truth, and the growing romance between them added warmth and heart to the tension.

Leila’s daughter, Evie, was absolutely adorable and brought an extra touch of sweetness to the story. With plenty of twists, high-stakes moments, and a satisfying feel-good ending, A Killer’s Target is an engaging suspense novel that left me smiling. This is the kind of page-turner that delivers thrills, heart, and hope all the way to the final chapter.

If you’re in the mood for a suspenseful read, A Killer’s Target is now available on Amazon, along with the author’s other novels. If you haven’t started the Amish Country Danger series yet, you can begin with Amish Midwife Witness—and there’s more to look forward to! The next installment, The Marshal’s Key Witness, releases on November 24. Also, mark your calendar for August 4, when I’ll be a stop on the Great Escapes Virtual Book Tours for Seeking the Kidnapped Child by Deena Alexander. Wishing you a day filled with laughter, love, and a cozy stack of books waiting nearby. Until next time—keep turning pages and chasing great stories!

Rodeo Witness Protector by Sami Abrams

Rodeo Witness Protector
Book Summary

A dangerous conspiracy…
and a child in the crosshairs.

While stopping an attack near the rodeo grounds, bullfighter and part-time deputy Daniel Sinclair is stunned to see his high school sweetheart attempting to save a stabbed undercover deputy. As a witness now in possession of crucial evidence about a narcotics investigation, new rodeo doctor Annie Davis needs Daniel’s protection—for her and her missing four-year-old daughter. And the stakes only grow higher when the girl’s babysitter is found murdered and the recovered child refuses to speak. To safeguard the targeted family, can Daniel uncover who is behind it all…before a drug ring silences them for good?

My Thoughts

From the very first page, Rodeo Witness Protector by Sami A. Abrams pulled me into a fast-moving story full of heart, danger, and just the right touch of tenderness. The action and suspense kept me turning pages because I had to know what would happen next. I enjoyed the author’s easy, engaging writing style and the quick pace that carried the story along. The cast of characters is strong, and Annie Davis’s work as a rodeo doctor felt like such a fresh and interesting profession.

Deputy Daniel Sinclair’s protective nature toward Annie and her daughter, Lily, added warmth to the story, and the scenes with Lily and K-9 Shadow were absolutely adorable. I also appreciated the gentle thread of faith woven throughout the book, along with the tender moments that balanced the danger so well. Rodeo Witness Protector is the third book in the Stone Creek Ranch series, but it can easily be enjoyed as a standalone. This pulse-pounding tale wrapped up far too soon, but it left me smiling long after I turned the final page.

Rodeo Witness Protector is available now from Amazon, and I’m so excited for readers to dive back into the suspense, danger, and heart of Stone Creek Ranch! The next book in the Stone Creek Ranch series, Dangerous Rodeo Secrets, releases February 23, 2027. If you’re just discovering the series, you can also catch up with the first two books, Christmas Rodeo Killer and Deadly Rodeo Threat. On Wednesday, July 29, I’ll be featuring Trusting the Single Dad by Meghann Whistler, so be sure to stop by. Until then, I hope your day is filled with good books, cozy moments, and plenty of happy reading!

My Thoughts

Guarded by the Sheriff by Monique DeVere is an exciting page-turner packed with action, suspense, danger, and heart. The story is well written and moves at a wonderfully fast pace, keeping me eager to see what would happen next. The main characters are well developed, likeable, and easy to root for, which made the emotional stakes even stronger. I especially enjoyed the blend of romance and danger, and as a fan of second-chance romance, this story checked all the right boxes. Guarded by the Sheriff took me on a thrilling roller coaster ride filled with threats, action, emotion, and swoon-worthy moments. This is the kind of story that grabs your attention, keeps you turning pages, and leaves you smiling long after the final chapter.

I will return on Tuesday, July 14 with Sisterhood Above All by Kathleen Barber with Amayah Shaienne. My mother's 81st birthday is next week.  I have one last gift to obtain and I will be set (something the birthday girl mentioned yesterday). I will be making my mother a special dinner since she does not want to go out to eat and there will be a cake as well.  She gets a birthday week instead of a day.  I did it for her 80th and she wants it again this year.  It will make her happy which is all that counts! May your weekend be full of joy and laughter.   Take care and Happy Reading!

But now the cartel leader’s henchmen think Maren is her sister and she has a target on her back. Forced to work together to unravel the deadly mystery, Maren and Colt must track down her twin before the criminals closing in claim their lives…
My Thoughts

Danger in the Rockies by Terri Reed is a thrilling page-turner that had me hooked from the very first page! Packed with suspense, action, mystery, romance, and faith, this story kept me reading late into the night because I just had to know how it would all turn out. I loved Maren and Colt, and Maren’s K-9 partner, Shadow, was such a great addition to the story. The chemistry between Maren and Colt adds even more depth as the danger escalates. I also really enjoyed how multiple agencies work together to solve the mystery. With themes of family, trust, second chances, and faith woven throughout, Danger in the Rockies is a captivating romantic suspense. Even though it’s the third book in the Colorado K-9 Unit series, it can definitely be read as a standalone. If you love romantic suspense with faith, danger, and a great K-9, this is a must-read!

Danger in the Rockies can be obtained from Amazon.  The next A Colorado K-9 Unit novel is Protecting the Baby which comes out June 30. The first two books in the Colorado K-9 Unit series are Searching for the Truth and Tracking the Taken Child.  If you enjoy romantic suspense, check out Terri Reed's other novels.   I will return on Tuesday, June 2 with Road Trip by Mary Kay Andrews. I hope that you have a wonderful weekend.  Enjoy the rest of your day and Happy Reading!

Scent of Peril by Darlene L. Turner

Scent of Peril
Book Summary

An innocent witness taken…
A K-9 in hot pursuit.

Dispatched with her K-9 partner, Shadow, to locate an abducted boy, Constable Taylor Grant finds herself ambushed in the wilderness along with Wyatt Hoyt, the child’s father. As Taylor and Wyatt relentlessly pursue the kidnappers and follow the little boy’s cryptic clues through treacherous terrain, they face persistent attacks and lethal traps. Each step closer to rescuing young Levi uncovers a deadly conspiracy tied to Wyatt’s past and a weapons-smuggling ring. With time running out, can they outwit a ruthless mastermind to save Levi before it’s too late?
My Thoughts

Scent of Peril by Darlene L. Turner is an action-packed, suspenseful story that pulled me in right away. The danger starts at the beginning and doesn’t let up, which kept me turning the pages. The villains are relentless, so Wyatt and Taylor are always on their toes. I also loved Taylor’s K-9, Shadow, who is such an important part of the story. As Taylor and Wyatt search for Wyatt’s son, Levi, they also have to deal with the feelings they still have for each other. There’s plenty of chemistry between them, but they need to work through the reason for their breakup before they can move forward.

I thought the story was well written, with strong characters and fast pacing. I had a feeling about Ridge’s identity, so I was eager to see if I was right. Faith is woven throughout the story, and even though this is the third National Park Protectors novel, it can definitely be read on its own. Overall, it’s a gripping story with an uplifting ending.

Scent of Peril is available from Amazon and other major booksellers (Barnes & Noble, Walmart, BAM, Kobo).  The first two books in the National Park Protectors series are Danger in the Wilderness and Trail of Mountain Secrets. You can find Darlene L. Turner's other novels here.
Other books out today are Survival in the Mountains by Carrie Stuart Parks, A Refuge in Montana by Allie Pleiter, The Sheriff's Secret Past by Tina Radcliffe, My Nightmare is Yours by Diane Vallere, Danger in the Rockies by Terri Reed, The Lake House by Lori Foster, and The Final Target by Nora Roberts. There is something for everyone.  I will be sharing my thoughts on The Final Target by Nora Roberts on Wednesday, May 27.  I am heading out to the screened porch to clean.  We have had heavy rains for the last few days which led to our screened porch and carport to flood (lots of debris to clean up). I am glad that I had the foresight to roll up the rug on the screened porch. The rain is welcome, though, after months of drought.  I hope that you have a terrific day. Take care and Happy Reading!

Witness Safeguard Mission by Carol J. Post

 Witness Safeguard Mission
Book Summary

A family in a killer’s crosshairs.
A K-9 determined to defend.

When Nicole Woodard and her young sister witness their father’s murder by an unknown assailant, Nicole knows they’re next on the killer’s hit list. Now they must rely on Officer Braydon Feldman and his K-9 partner, Caesar, for protection. The killer will stop at nothing to silence the sisters and keep the crime hidden. But what could their father have been involved in that got him killed? With attacks coming from all sides and dangerous family secrets being exposed, can Braydon and Nicole stay alive long enough to uncover the truth before the killer strikes again?

My Thoughts

I was quickly drawn into Witness Safeguard Mission by Carol J. Post.  The story was filled with action right from the outset and maintained that momentum all the way through. I appreciated the unpredictability, as it kept me guessing about what might unfold next.  Meeting Nicole Woodard, her younger sister Maddy, Officer Braydon Feldman, and his K9 companion Caesar was a highlight. Caesar showed intelligence, loyalty, and affection, and he played an important role in apprehending criminals.

Nicole and Braydon had chemistry, but survival is essential for their relationship to progress.    There is a thread of faith woven through the story, and the epilogue provided a satisfying conclusion that made me smile. Witness Safeguard Mission is the fourth Canine Defense book, but it works as a standalone. Witness Safeguard Mission is a suspenseful story with a murdered dad, a clever K-9, a scared sister, resolute killers, a protective officer, children’s church, and, hopefully, a happily ever after.

Witness Safeguard Mission is available from Amazon.  The first three books in the Canine Defense series are Searching for Evidence, Sniffing Out Justice, and Uncovering the Truth.   The fifth Canine Defense novel is Defending the Innocent Target which will be out on September 29.  You can find Carol J. Post's other novels here.  Thank you for joining me today.  I am a stop on the JustRead Publicity Tours on Thursday, April 30 for A Child to Bind Them by Donna Gartshore.  I am off to get some chores done.  I hope that you have a wonderful Wednesday.  Take care and Happy Reading!
