Her Secret Hope by Shelley Shepard Gray

Her Secret Hope
Book Summary

Almost two years after Lilly Kurtz first traveled to Pinecraft, Florida, with friends, she's decided to make a fresh start there. She's ready to be new-and-improved Lilly, a Lilly without a past, a Lilly with no secrets. At first, everything goes well. She gets a job, her coworkers feel like family, and she enjoys reconnecting with her friends. But it turns out the past is reluctant to be left behind.

When Lilly meets hardworking farmer Eddie Byler, she can't get him off of her mind. But then she discovers that Eddie actually lives just a few miles from her hometown in Ohio. Lilly knows that he's not going to like it when he finds out what secrets she's been running from. And she knows she could never follow the man she's falling in love with back to a place where she's never felt accepted.

Will Lilly have to give up on love in order to find peace? Or could it be that love is actually the solution to all of her problems?
Siesta Key is a beach that Lilly visits (it is my favorite beach)
My Thoughts

Her Secret Hope by Shelley Shepard Gray has Lilly Kurtz returning to Pinecraft for a fresh start. It has been two years since her first visit to the unique Amish and Mennonite town.  Lilly was adopted as a baby and her family never kept it a secret.  Actually, it seems one of the first things Mrs. Kurtz’s tells people (heavens knows why).  Lilly also did not feel accepted by the children at school.  Mary Margaret, Betsy, and Esther are the first true friends Lilly had had in her life.  I know what it is like to feel that you do not fit in and to have people judge you.  Lilly may be in a new city, but she has still has to learn to let people get to know her.  It seems that Lilly keeps a protective a shield around her.  The characters are realistic and developed.  I like that we get to catch up with Mary Margaret, Betsy, Esther, and their husbands.

Lilly gets a job at bed and breakfast that is run by Nancy (the place the young women stayed on their first visit to Pinecraft).  I like that we get to catch up with Nancy and her friendly chef.  Lilly may believe that she is destined to remain single, but it seems God has other plans for her.  Of course, Lilly needs to be willing to let down her barriers and be happy with who she is.  I just love November Byler.  She is a spirited character.  I hope I am as lively and quick witted at that age.  I did feel that the story moved a little slow in places and there was a repetition of details.  The author captured Pinecraft and Siesta Key.  I understood why Lilly liked going to Siesta Key beach, it is a beautiful beach (it is my favorite beach).  Her Secret Hope is the third and final book in A Season in Pinecraft series.  It can be read as a standalone, but I recommend reading the series in order.  It will allow you to get to know the characters and their stories.  There are good life lessons in Her Secret Hope including that God is in control.  Her Secret Hope is a touching tale with a returning friend, a spirited grandmother, a bored farmer, a flirtatious chef, an alarming allegation, and a gracious God.

Her Secret Hope can be ordered through Amazon*.  The first two books in A Season in Pinecraft series are Her Heart's Desire and Her Only Wish.  Shelley Shepard Gray will have A is for Amish out on May 21, 2024.  It is the debut of the Amish ABCs series.  You can follow Shelley Shepard Gray on Amazon and they will send you an email when she has  new book release.  I appreciate you joining me today.  Due to health issues, I am taking some time off.  I will return on November 30 as a stop on the Great Escapes Virtual Book Tours for Christmas in the Crosshairs by Deena Alexander.  I am taking a little extra time off for health reasons.  I hope that you have a relaxing weekend.  Take care and Happy Reading!

Anything but Plain by Suzanne Woods Fisher: More from Author, Review, & Giveaway!

About the Book

BookAnything But Plain

AuthorSuzanne Woods Fisher

GenreAmish fiction

Release date: October 4, 2022

It’s not easy being the bishop’s daughter, especially for Lydie Stoltzfus. She’s not like other Amish girls, as much as she wishes she were. The only thing she does well is disappoint others. Leaving her family and church seems unbearable but staying might be worse.

Knowing Lydie is “between” jobs, the local doctor asks her to fill in at the front desk for a few months. To Lydie, this is a boon. It gives her time to figure out how she’s going to say goodbye to her neighbor, Nathan Yoder–the main reason she needs to leave Stoney Ridge. Nathan claims he’s in love with her, but she knows she’s not good enough for him. If in doubt, Nathan’s father reminds her frequently.

As Dok spends time with Lydie, she recognizes symptoms of an uncommon disorder among the Amish. She offers treatment for Lydie. But will it be enough to make her stay? Or has help come too late?

Easily Distracted? 8 Strategies to Help Stay Focused

Anything but Plain is a story about a young Amish woman with undiagnosed ADHD. Lydie Stoltzfus feels like a square peg in a round hole. She just doesn’t fit in and, to make matters worse, she’s the bishop’s daughter. At this point, the only path forward she can see is to leave Stoney Ridge. Leave her church, her friends, her family, her neighbor Nathan Yoder. It’s better to leave, Lydie decides, than to keep disappointing everyone she cares about. I won’t say anymore so that I don’t spoil the story for you.

ADHD is not a common diagnosis among the Amish and many might assume it’s not a real thing. Of course, they’re mistaken. ADHD is a real thing. While I don’t have ADHD, I do have many friends and family members who have been diagnosed. It’s challenging! And something we should all take seriously. Here’s why:

Evidence is mounting that a growing dependence on digital devices could be giving all of us some ADHD-like symptoms. Have you wondered if distractibility is becoming a problem for you? Or has a spouse or child or friend remarked on how often you pick up your phone to check a text message or scroll Instagram? You might remain physically present but your mind has wandered away. For me, the answer is, regrettably, yes.

There’s a recurring phrase in Anything but Plain that comes from an old-fashioned farming term: Walking the beans. Literally, it means weeding by hand. Figuratively, it means paying attention to our priorities. To pull the weeds before they take root.

One of the takeaway lessons of this book is to “walk the beans” of technology’s role in my life. So…I’ve been working on a few strategies. When I practice, I see a difference. Life is calmer. More manageable.

So…I wanted to pass these tips along to you. (If you have little children, these might not work for you. Not when your little ones are awake, anyway.) Hopefully, you’ll find them to be useful, and maybe spark some strategies of your own.

  • Make a plan. I start the day with an index card and write down the day’s priorities. And I check off tasks as I finish them!
  • Go off-line. Create an environment that helps you stay focused. Turn your cell phone to silent. If working on the computer, close your email app. Put yourself in distraction-free mode until you’re accomplished what you need to do
  • Finish one task before moving on to the next. Even little tasks.
  • Distractibility is at its peak during transitions. Build in margin. For example, arrive a few minutes early instead of rushing in a few minutes late.
  • When distractions are high, make tasks smaller and break down your large projects into smaller tasks to help you concentrate and give you a sense of accomplishment and progress.
  • When I’m facing a big task, I’ll break it down into smaller, more manageable pieces.
  • Set a deadline for a task. Beat the clock! Use a timer.
  • Rewards! When I beat the clock, I’ll take a break from computer work and pop up to the garden, text a friend, walk the dog. Something that feels good.

My Thoughts

Anything but Plain by Suzanne Woods Fisher is a special Amish tale.  I thought the story was well-written with realistic, developed characters.  I liked returning to Stoney Ridge with its familiar characters (can be read as a standalone).  There are some amusing characters.  I would put Hank near the top of the list.  I can just imagine him with his loud voice (he always shouts).  Lydie Stoltzfus is a great character.  She is lighthearted, lively, and scattered.  Lydie has trouble staying focused and following through on things (starts one project and then goes off to another, leaving cupboard doors open, always late).  Lydie feels like a round peg being pushed into a square hole.  I thought the author did a wonderful job at showing how ADHD can affect a person's life.  I can tell the author did her research on ADHD.  It was interesting learning about the techniques that can help people with ADHD (something besides medication).

I loved the humor scattered throughout the story.  Lydie’s grandmother is a force of nature.  People would rather flee their home than deal with her.  I enjoyed learning about organic farming and the different types of produce.  There were some varieties that I had never heard of before.  I like that the author showed how pesticides can affect people (an example is individuals with asthma).  The romance progressed slowly which suited the story.  There are a couple of different storylines in the book involving various characters in Stoney Ridge.  It makes for a more engaging book.  The ending left me with a smile on my face.  I appreciated that there was a cast of characters at the beginning of the book. Anything but Plain was an entertaining story.  I hope this is not our last visit to Stoney Ridge.  Anything but Plain is a diverting tale with a speedy scooter, an undulating pasture, a meddling Mammi, a fleeing family, missing magazine pages, a big blast, and a surefire solution.

Looking for Leroy by Melody Carlson

 Looking for Leroy

Book Summary

It's official: Brynna Phillips is done with men. They only break your heart. But just when she makes this declaration, her friend Jan convinces Brynna to join her on a camping vacation in Sonoma Wine Country. As they wind their way toward their destination, spanking-new mini camper in tow, Brynna recalls her teenage camp romance with a boy named Leroy. How can it have been nearly 30 years ago? All she remembers is that Leroy was a genuinely good guy and that his family owned a vineyard--in Sonoma. She doesn't even remember his last name. Jan insists they look for him, and the search begins.

Beyond the slim chance they'd ever be able to find him are questions that have haunted Brynna for decades, including What is the point of digging up the past? and Can Leroy ever forgive me for losing touch?

Bestselling author Melody Carlson invites you on a trip to rediscover the carefree days of youth and, just maybe, to get a second chance at love.

My Thoughts

Looking for Leroy by Melody Carlson is a sweet story.  I count always count on Melody Carlson to provide a story that will engage me and distract me from reality.  Brynna Phillips goes on a camping trip with co-worker, Jan Barton who has a new red travel trailer.  When they stop at a campground that was formally a Christian camp that Brynna went to as a teen, she tells Jan about Leroy.  Since they will be traveling through Sonoma Valley, Jan suggests they locate Leroy and their new camping companion, Mike agrees with her.  Reluctantly, Brynna goes along with them.  When they find the vineyard, Brynna is ready to run.  She regrets how she ended things with Leroy thirty years ago and is not sure how he will react to her presence.  Brynna is wandering around the property when she encounters Sophie, Leroy’s pregnant daughter.  She mistakes Brynna for the woman coming to interview for the office manager position.  Brynna gets the job, and her friends convince her to take it.  Brynna wonders what Leroy will think when they encounter each other?

I thoroughly enjoyed Looking for Leroy.  It is a charming Christian romance.  I started reading and did not want to put it down.  I found Looking for Leroy to be well-written with developed, realistic characters.  This is a character driven story.  I liked getting to know Brynna, Leroy, and Leroy’s large family especially Sophie and Gina (two of Leroy’s daughters).  I enjoyed the beautiful descriptions of Sonoma Valley.  It sounds like a lovely place to live. The Christian element was seamlessly woven into the story.  There is humor as well.  I found myself chuckling several times while reading Looking for Leroy.  This was a delightful second chance romance.  Looking for Leroy reminds me of Melody Carlson’s The Happy Camper (another fun story that can be read for free if you belong to Kindle Unlimited).  Looking for Leroy is a delightful book to read on a lazy Saturday afternoon.  I was sorry to see it end.  Looking for Leroy is a captivating tale with a red travel trailer, a Christian Camp recollection, Motorcycle Mike, a vineyard vista, a massive misunderstanding, a wily woman, and a magic moment.

Looking for Leroy is available from Amazon*.  You can find Melody Carlson's other novels here. I look forward to reading Melody Carlson's Christmas novel each fall.  Several of her books can be read for free if you are a Kindle Unlimited member.  I wonder what she will create for us this year.  Thank you for taking time out of your day to stop by and read my review.  I will return on Monday with Murder Through an Open Door by Melissa Bourbon.  It is the 4th A Book Magic Mystery.  I am heading otuside to finish my St. Patrick's Day decorations.  I have some green lights to put up that will go with my inflatable leprechauns and cute garden flags.  I hope that you have a gratifying day.  Take care, stay safe, and Happy Reading!

Two Steps Forward by Suzanne Woods Fisher takes us back to Stoney Ridge, Pennsylvania.  Jimmy Fisher is returning home dispirited.  Things did not go as planned in Colorado.  He is nearing the Bent N’ Dent when he sees a buggy pulled by a beautiful Arabian with a violet eyed beauty holding the reins.  Sylvie Schrock King is a widow with 4 ½ year old boy, a dilapidated farm and a big idea.  She knows that Edith Lapp will not appreciate her hiring Jimmy, but Sylvia needs the help and Jimmy understands horses.  Edith Lapp has been a thorn in Sylvie’s side, and she seems determined to reclaim Rising Star Farm that once belonged to her grandfather.  Sylvie wants to use the Arabian to breed horses, but she is not sure how to execute her plan.  Her deceased husband was known for bringing home junk and procrastination.  Jimmy admits that the task is daunting, but he does find it challenging.  The more time Jimmy spends with Sylvie, the more he is attracted to her.  But Jimmy is not looking to settle down.  Luke Schrock sees a lot of his old self in Jimmy.  When it looks like Jimmy needs a nudge, the women come up with a plan.
Salvage Stores - if you're a true bargain hunter these are yet another Amish Country Experience you'll not want to miss!! Northeast Ohio and Holmes County area.
Two Steps Forward by Suzanne Woods Fisher is the third (and final) book in The Deacon’s Family series.  While Two Steps Forward can be read on its own, you will be missing out on two delightful books.   Reading The Deacon’s Family series in order allows you to get to know Luke, Izzy, Bishop David, Hank, Edith and the other characters in Stoney Ridge.  I have enjoyed following Luke’s journey and it is not over yet.  Jimmy Fisher is returning to Stoney Ridge after the ranch he was working on in Colorado went belly up.  He discovers that his mother, Edith has turned his bedroom into a scrapbooking room which has Jimmy sleeping on a lumpy sofa in the basement.  Sylvie Schrock King is a widow raising four and a half year old, Joey on her own along with trying to take care of Rising Star Farm.  Sylvie offers Jimmy a job which he accepts over his mother’s protests.  Jimmy is eager to work with Prince the Arabian horse Sylvie uses to pull her buggy.  When Izzy and Fern read about a second infant who died after being abandoned, they implore Luke to come up with an idea.  Izzy is happily married to Luke and loves their adopted girl, but she feels a loss over never knowing her own father.  She approaches her mother in hopes of learning more about her biological father.  Two Steps Forward is a delightfully entertaining novel.  There is humor, joy, love, frustration and despair.  There is also faith in the Lord.  They know that God is there watching over them and will take care of them.   I liked getting to know Sylvie.  She had a rough childhood in a conservative Amish group and frequently quotes phrases from the Bible.  Sylvie is good with animals and strays have a way of finding their way to Rising Star Farm.  Jimmy is an upbeat man who is a hard worker and a charmer.  His dimples and charm help him with women, but Jimmy has trouble with making a permanent commitment.  I like how the book brought attention to the issue of abandoned babies.  While there are Safe Haven laws, there are still babies left in restrooms and dumpsters.    Two Steps Forward is well-written with engaging characters set in a special Amish community.  This is a book that had me smiling and laughing often while reading it with the occasional frown (thanks to Edith).  I am going to miss Stoney Ridge and the people who reside there (even Hank Lapp).  Two Steps Forward is a brilliant conclusion to The Deacon’s Family series.  Two Steps Forward is a charming tale with baby boxes, a hen pen, a jumble of junk, a bright boy, a meddling mother and a benevolent bishop.
For a busy volunteer fire volunteer fire department “this one call made their year” By Dave Andrusko It’s a good thing perseverance won out at the Coolspring Township Volunteer Fire Department in La Porte County, Indiana. According to Marcella Raymond of WGN-TV, there had taken a big fight to get a Safe Haven Baby Box
Two Steps Forward can be purchased from Amazon* and other major booksellers (Barnes & Noble, Kobo, iBooks, CBD).  The other two novels in The Deacon's Family series are Mending Fences (on Kindle Unlimited) and Stitches in Time.  Suzanne Woods Fisher's next book release is On a Coastal Breeze.  It releases on May 5, 2020 and is the second book in Three Sisters Island series.  On a Summer Tide is the first book in Three Sisters Island series and it is available through Kindle Unlimited.  Thank you for stopping by today.  I will be back tomorrow with The Bermondsey Bookshop by Mary Gibson.  I hope that you have a friendly day.  Take care and Happy Reading!
