My Thoughts

Trusting the Amish Farmer by Laurel Blount is a heartwarming Amish tale.  I enjoyed getting to know Jeremiah, Anna, Susie, and Anna’s son, Matthew.  I loved the scenes where Jeremiah was teaching Matthew the difference between a vegetable and a weed (so sweet).  I liked the interactions between Jeremiah and Anna.  Anna was determined to not marry another farmer.  This is a great example of how we plan, and God laughs.  There are good life lessons in the story including that it takes time for a heart to heal. While Trusting the Amish Farmer is the second book in the Hickory Springs Amish series, it can be read as a standalone.  The ending was sweet, and I was smiling when I turned the last page of Trusting the Amish Farmer.

My Thoughts

The Amish Widower’s Surprise by Laurel Blount is a cute story.  I like Laurel Blount’s writing style.  It is friendly and engaging.  I enjoyed the main characters, Lilah Troyer and Eben Miller as well as Susie, Lilah’s landlady and friend (who is also the local matchmaker). Lilah is plainspoken which tends to land her in trouble (with foot-in-mouth disease).  I liked that Lilah spoke her mind.  You always know where you stand with her, though, it can lead to hurt feelings (or you can find yourself trying to suppress a chuckle).  The children were a charming addition to the story.  The siblings allow us to see Lilah and Eben in a new light.  I liked the character growth, and the sweet ending. I enjoyed the humor sprinkled throughout the story.  The epilogue wrapped up the tale nicely.  I hope we get to catch up with the characters in the next book in the Hickory Springs Amish series.  I would like to see more of their delightful bishop.  The Amish Widower's Surprise is a sweet story with a sorrowful shopkeeper, a candid maedel, amiable matchmaker, cute foster kids, a dusty quilt, and rapid rumors.

My Thoughts

The Triplets’ Summer Adventure by Laurel Blount is a story that brought a smile to my face.  I was happy to return to Cedar Ridge, Georgia.  The story has delightful characters.  The author created realistic, relatable characters.  I enjoyed getting to know Nick, Cara, and the triplets.  It was great to catch up with Nick’s foster siblings and their wonderful foster mother, Ruby.  Ruby is a clever matchmaker.  Nick was good with the triplets, and I enjoyed their interactions.  Cara’s critter trouble had me laughing. It is a good thing she had Nick around to help her with the lizard who decided to make the pantry its home (reminded me of the first time I saw a lizard in our home—I live in Florida—my father refused to remove it—I was standing on the coffee table—and told me that the lizards ate the bugs—I did not find that helpful).  

My favorite line came from Ruby, “Loving folks, really loving them, the way He tells us to?  There ain’t no adventure in this world bigger or scarier nor better than that!”  I am sorry that our time in Cedar Ridge has come to an end.  The Triplets’ Summer Adventure is a heartwarming and entertaining story with close siblings, a matchmaking mother, a fishing fiasco, a critter predicament, mouthwatering meals, and camp catastrophes.

My Thoughts

Home from the Storm by Laurel Blount is a touching Amish tale.  I was happy to head back to Johns Mill for Caleb and Rhoda Hochstedler’s story.   I thought Home from the Storm was well-written with developed characters.  Caleb is a stubborn man with a temper.  He has never taken the time to grieve over the loss of his parents.  Caleb is determined to catch his parents’ killer.  Caleb learns that there is a price to pay for his relentless pursuit for justice.  Rhoda is a good Amish woman who has found herself to be that knot in the middle of a tug of war rope.  Rhoda was pulled back and forth by her husband and her father who was the bishop of their district.  I liked that the story is told from Rhoda and Caleb’s perspective.  It allows us to know their thoughts and feelings.  The suspense is well done.  There were tense moments that would find me quickly flipping the pages to discover what would happen.  The romance was nicely done.  I do feel the pacing could have been a touch peppier in places.  I like the new bishop of Johns Mill.  Abram King certainly has a different approach from Rhoda’s father.  Trust and forgiveness are the main themes in the story.  Home from the Storm is the fourth book in A Johns Mill Amish Romance series.  While Home from the Storm can be read as a standalone (the author includes the needed background information), I do recommend reading the series in order.  It will allow you to get to know the characters, their stories, and the town.  The ending from Home from the Storm left me smiling.  Home from the Storm a gratifying tale with a killer on the run, bakery troubles, a benevolent bishop, an indomitable Daed, a hair trigger temper, a double disclosure, and finding forgiveness.

“Abram said you and I weren’t to . . . talk about anything until he got here, but while we’re waiting, I’d like to see the little ones.” He shifted his weight from one boot to the other. “I hardly even got a good look at them before. If you don’t mind, I’d rather meet them now, while we’re alone.”

Rhoda hesitated, sympathy warring with concern.

She needed Abram here. She wasn’t sure how to deal with this. And she certain sure needed to know what had brought her husband home and what his plans were before this went much further. The idea of Caleb being part of the twins’ lives while living among the Englisch and thumbing his nose at church rules . . . that worried her.

But she could understand Caleb not wanting to meet his son and daughter under the eye of the bishop. He’d never felt comfortable around church leaders, and for good reason.

“All right,” she conceded. “They’re in the kitchen.”

Caleb crossed the bakery in a few long strides, but he stopped short at the kitchen doorway.

Rhoda paused behind him, unsure what to do. Best, she decided, to do nothing. She would step in if the children showed any signs of being upset, but Caleb would have to handle the introductions himself. She had no idea how to go about it.

He took a step in the children’s direction—then halted. He turned to Rhoda, and the raw pain on his face made her catch her breath.

“What?” she whispered, alarmed.

“I don’t . . . I don’t know their names,” he ground out roughly.

My Thoughts

A Family to Foster by Laurel Blount takes us back to Cedar Ridge where we get to spend time with one of Ruby Sawyer’s former foster kids, Torey Bryant.  I love Ruby and I am glad we get to visit her again.  I enjoyed getting to know Patrick Callahan (Torey’s ex-fiancé who left her with a broken heart) and Torey Bryant.  The two need to work together to fix and reopen Hope Center.  Patrick will do whatever it takes to keep Josh and Jill, the two children he is fostering and would like to adopt.  Torey, who is taking a leave of absence from her recently acquired dream job, will do what is needed because she loves Ruby.  I laughed often while reading A Family to Foster.  I like Laurel Blount’s writing style.  She creates realistic characters that you want to get to know (you want them to be your neighbors and friends).  The story is easy to read and has a good flow.  It was nice how the romance progressed.  I like how Patrick’s foster kids were included.   

Ruby is a delightful character.  She knows her former foster kids well and knows the right buttons to push.  Ruby is working to get each one matched up.  I like the “Rubisms” as I call them.  Ruby doles out good, practical advice (and it is remembered and followed years later).  I enjoyed catching up with Ruby’s other foster children.  While this is the fourth book in the series, it can be read as a standalone.  I do, though, recommend reading each charming story.  A Family to Foster has love, forgiveness, heartache, loyalty, hurt feelings, distrust, and romance.  This is the type of book you want to read while sitting in a comfy chair with hot tea and cookies warm from the oven.  I am looking forward to my next visit to Cedar Ridge.  A Family to Foster is a heartwarming tale with a loyal family, a timid dog, technology troubles, an irascible Ruby, a cantankerous social worker, and a second chance romance.

My Thoughts

Courage in the Storm by Laurel Blount is a touching tale.  It is a delight to return to Johns Mill.  I enjoyed getting to know Miriam and her caring family along with Rueben and Breeze.  Courage in the Storm is well-written with steady pacing.  The characters are realistic and developed.  I can tell that the author did her research for this story.  She captured the fear a human and animal can feel after a traumatic event.  In Courage in the Storm, “Fear always has its reasons.  It comes down to experience usually.”  I like the analogy of relating a wild animal’s fear of humans to be a learned behavior.  I see it with the feral cats in my community.  They learn to fear humans from their mother and the other cats.  The path to healing is bumpy and slow.  You can make progress and then an incident happens that will set them back (the old one step forward and two steps back).   Rueben came to help a horse and ended up aiding Miriam as well.  In exchange, Miriam helped Ruben with his issues.  

I liked Johns Mill new bishop, Abram King.  He was a breath of fresh air.  I like how he handled situations and counseled the members of his community.  There is humor in the story (a little levity was needed).  I loved hearing about Miriam and her chickens (and the rooster).  I had to laugh at the names Miriam gave the chickens.  Miriam said that “each chicken has a unique personality.”  Courage in the Storm is the third A Johns Mill Amish Romance.  It can be read as a standalone, but I highly recommend reading Shelter in the Storm and Strength in the Storm.  I like that we get to catch up with the characters from both of those books.  I am looking forward to reading Home from the Storm (we get Caleb and Rhoda’s story).   One of my favorite phrases from Courage in the Storm is, “. . . asking for Gott’s help to do what’s needed.  With Him, we can do many things that seem too hard at first.”  Courage in the Storm is a heartfelt tale with a fearful maedel, a frightened horse, a patient trainer, concerned relatives, a benevolent bishop, and a gracious Gott.

My Thoughts

Together for the Twins by Laurel Blount is an entertaining story.  Ruby is slowly finding matches for the foster children that she raised who became part of her boisterous family.  Ryder has done very well for himself in the business world.  He has recently started his own business which demands his full attention.  When he becomes guardian of his sister’s twin boys, Ryder finds himself at a loss.  The four-year-old twins are terrors.  Ruby and the rest of his foster siblings are at their wits end.  Nanny Elise Cooper is an answer to his prayers.  She manages to get the twins in line right away.  Elise can take the job for the summer as long as she is provided separate accommodations.  She has no intention of getting involved with her boss.  As time passes, the foursome begins to feel like a family.  Elise is delighted to be welcomed into Ryder’s large and noisy family.  What happens, though, when Ryder fails to tell Elise about an important phone call?  

I thought it was well-written with realistic characters.  The author created great characters.   Ruby Sawyer is a delight.  The twins were quite a pair.   I laughed often while reading Together for the Twins.  The ending was touching and nicely wrapped up Together for the Twins.  I appreciated the Christian element in the story.  It was not heavy handed or preachy.  I like how the adults were teaching the twins by example.  Together for the Twins is the third book in the Cedar Ridge series.  It can be read as a standalone, but you will be missing out on two diverting tales.  My favorite part of the story is when Ruby showed Elise the memory quilt she was making for Ryder.  It is a touching scene.  Together for the Twins is a charming story with troublesome twins, an inexperienced uncle, a knowledgeable nanny, a merry matchmaker, a lobbed library book, a beneficial fort, and a lively family.

Ryder sat on the edge of Tuck’s twin bed, listening to Elise reading a bedtime story about a frog and a toad. He’d taken over the bedtime routine for the most part, but tonight the twins had talked Elise into participating. She’d agreed, and here they were. He could have gone downstairs and cracked open his laptop, but he hadn’t. The truth was, he hadn’t wanted to leave. Right now, Ryder couldn’t think of any place in the world he’d rather be. Outside, a summer storm had blown in, and rain was pattering steadily down. Lightning was flashing in the distance, and thunder rumbled. It was the sort of night that—before he’d come to live with Ruby—had made him hunker down uneasily on his bare mattress—or the back seat of his dad’s Dodge, if they happened to be homeless at the time. But here, inside in the circle of lamplight, everything was cozy and pleasant. The boys, freshly scrubbed and in their favorite pajamas, sat up in their beds, stuffed dinosaurs tucked carefully under the sheets, absorbed in the story. Elise read expressively, the light behind her gilding her hair, the pages whispering as she turned them, one by one. He was thankful she was reading tonight. He wasn’t sure he could have managed it. Right now he felt like that storybook frog was caught right in the middle of his throat. When he was a kid, not much older than Tuck and Benji, he remembered being too hungry to sleep and slipping out of the singlewide he and his dad were renting. He’d roamed the trailer park on summer evenings while his father was absorbed in whatever ball game he’d bet on that night. Sometimes Ryder had caught glimpses through windows of scenes like this one, families grouped together around tables with plates of food, or kids snug in beds that looked clean and had sheets. He hadn’t known much about God back then, but he’d known enough to pray that one day he’d have a home like that. One complete with a grown-up who cared, and enough money to stay clean and well-fed. When the foster system had bounced him to Ruby’s house, that prayer had been answered. Now God had answered again. With Elise’s help, he’d managed to give his nephews just the kind of home he’d dreamed about as a kid. The relief and gratitude filled his heart so full that it barely fit in his chest. His eyes were drawn back to Elise’s profile, to the way her expression changed depending on what she was reading. He could feel his own expression changing as he watched her. They hadn’t had a chance to talk yet. But they would. That was coming, and he prayed he could find the right way to tell her what he was feeling.
