My Thoughts

On a Midnight Clear contains three historical Christmas stories by Tracie Peterson, Karen Witemeyer, and Misty M. Beller. I like that the novellas are inspired by the Nativity story. I enjoyed all three stories. The reason for the season shone in each one. The stories are well-written with likeable characters. My favorite novella was The Shepherd’s Heart by Tracie Peterson. It was sweet and heartwarming. A Star in the West by Karen Witemeyer is a more sedate story with its mathematical talk. I liked their take on the three wise men from the east. No Room at the Inn by Misty Beller is appropriately named. The story is well-crafted with an effective twist. On a Midnight Clear contains three uplifting tales that provided me with a great escape and have me humming Christmas carols.

My Thoughts

An Unexpected Grace by Tracie Peterson and Kimberley Woodhouse is an uplifting second chance romance. There is suspense courtesy of a wicked brother-in-law who will use any means necessary to get what he wants. I like the authors’ writing style. I found myself slowly being drawn into the story. I liked Joanna, who grew up in the ten years since she last saw Parker. She is a strong, determined, and creative woman. Joanna creates stylish hats for the ladies of the town (the hats during this time period were beautiful). I liked that Joanna had matured in character and faith. Emily is a busy yet adorable child. She managed to wrap Parker around her little finger. Marvella is a great character. She added humor to the story.

Faith is prominent throughout the story as well as hope and healing. I wish, though, that the plot had not followed a foreseeable path and there had been less reiteration. The story has a good message and an ending that left me smiling. An Unexpected Grace is a pleasing conclusion to The Jewels of Kalispell series. An Unexpected Grace is a touching tale with a blackguard brother-in-law, a rambunctious child, attractive chapeaus, a traveling troupe, a flirtatious Frenchwoman, and a gracious God.

My Thoughts

A Choice Considered by Tracie Peterson is the second book in The Heart of Cheyenne series. It can be read as a standalone for those who have not read A Love Discovered. I thought A Choice Considered was easy to read. I enjoyed getting to know Melody and her father as well as Charlie. The characters, though, needed more depth. The characters are a little too perfect with the bad guy being the sneering, twirling the ends of his mustache type of villain (the type you see in cartoons). We get to visit Cheyenne in 1868 just as the railroad tracks have been finished and the workers are ready to move on to the next site. I do not blame Melody for being ready to settle down in one location after years of travel. I did find some of the details to be inaccurate (two small examples are you do not leave a stove unattended in a tent for long periods of time nor do you leave food out on the table because a dog will snatch it—or a hungry vagrant).

The story follows Melody and Charlie as they get to know each other. In between the pair go to work and Melody goes on the dates set up by her father. There is a touch of suspense when a disgruntled bank employee makes off with funds. A Choice Considered is a clean, Christian story (no intimate relations or foul language). A Choice Considered is a nice story, but I thought it was very predictable. I could foresee how the story would play out early on. I felt this book was not on par with Tracie Peterson’s earlier works. While A Choice Considered was a miss for me, it will not keep me from reading Tracie’s books in the future.

My Thoughts

Love through the Seasons by Tracie Peterson contains four contemporary, Christian stories. Each story takes place during one of the four seasons. We get to enjoy spring, summer, fall and winter along with the activities and holidays that take place during those seasons. We are not given the year in the novellas. I know that they are not the present day because of certain references. Each story has a theme or moral. I like the Christian themes in each novella. There are good life lessons. I found the stories to be easy to read. Each story can be read in a sitting. Each novella begins with a problem, and we see the characters work to overcome them with help from God. My favorite story was Falling in Love which takes place in autumn. Karen Armstrong lives with her mother on the family farm. They soon invite the mother’s sisters to live with them. Modifications need to be done to the home. Karen hires Dan Polk and his sons to do the needed renovations. Karen and Dan have both lost their spouses. Karen’s mother and aunts decide to do a little matchmaking. It is a cute story. I would have liked a whole book involving these characters.

My least favorite story is Silent Nights (the winter tale). Lynn Murphy and her husband, Frank have been married for ten years. Frank is gone on business trips more than he is at home. When Frank cancels their tenth anniversary trip to Mexico, Lynn decides she has had enough. She heads to her grandfather’s home to think things through. There is a lot of bickering which got on my nerves. Frank and Lynn both have valid issues. The problem is that neither one has bothered to share their concerns with their spouse. This tale was lacking. I thought there was too much repetition. My favorite character in this story is Gramps. Love through the Seasons comprises four sweet, feel-good romances that transports readers to Kansas.

In book one, Forever Hidden, we are introduced to three sisters and their family (and farm) in Nome. Forever Hidden is Havyn’s story. And did I mention there are chickens? Check out my blog for some interesting pictures and stories about how these chicken stories came to be…

Book two, Endless Mercy, is Madysen’s story. Madysen is the youngest sibling, and in our story, she’s a talented cello player. Oh, and there are some sheep, who just might help get her into mischief. (Are you seeing a pattern here?)

This series is very near and dear to us because the Powell sisters in the books are actually named after three beautiful girls we adore. They were music students of mine in Colorado and when Tracie and I had a book signing for In the Shadow of Denali, the red-headed, musical sisters all came. Tracie made the comment that someone should write a book about them…so of course…we did!

I wish you could hear the girls play and sing in real life. They are such talented musicians, and I love them dearly. Huge thanks go to Monica and Merle Powell for allowing us to take their three girls and make fictional characters out of them.

My Thoughts

Endless Mercy by Tracie Peterson and Kimberley Woodhouse has Madysen Powell feeling angry towards her father. All these years the three girls thought he was dead. Now he shows up looking to reconnect with them and he is asking for forgiveness. Madysen loves her sheep and is looking forward to the expansion of the cheese business. However, Madysen dreams of singing in concert halls around the world. When a man shows up in town who can offer her this opportunity will Madysen leave Nome or will she pick the man a little closer to home? I thought Endless Mercy was a well-written novel with developed characters. While the story focuses on Madysen, we get to catch up with the other two sisters. Havyn is happily married while Whitney is busy training her sled dogs. The grandfather is recovering, and the girls’ father has arrived in town. Judas Reynolds has not given up on finding leverage on the Powell family. I thought the authors’ captured the time period and the location of Nome, Alaska. I enjoyed the descriptions of the town, the sisters’ performances, the farm, and the process of making cheese. I liked seeing Madysen grow as an individual. Madysen must decide whether to pursue her singing ambitions or the path the Lord has set for her. Mercy, grace, and forgiveness are the main themes in Endless Mercy. I like how faith and God are incorporated into the story. I thought Endless Mercy was a well-balanced novel. Endless Mercy is the 2^nd book in The Treasures of Nome series. Endless Mercy can be read as a standalone, however, I recommend reading both books (in order) in this engaging historical series. I am looking forward to reading the Whitney’s story in the final installment in The Treasures of Nome series.
