Book Summary

Witching for Clarity by Deanna Chase has Clarity “Gigi” Martin tired of the men she is meeting on the dating app.  She is amazed at what some of the men message to her while her best friend, Skylar finds the pics hilarious.  Skylar and Gigi are going through her designer duds in the attic for Skylar’s new shop when Gigi opens a trunk and finds her mother’s wedding dress.  Gigi’s mother disappeared when she was eighteen and there were never any leads.  The only person the police suspected was Sebastian, her best friend at the time, because he was the last person to see her before her disappearance.  A ghost provides a message telling Gigi that someone from her past has the answers she seeks.  Gigi reconnects with Sebastian Knight who happens to be in Premonition Pointe.  The sparks fly from the moment they say hello.  Can Sebastian help Gigi finally get the answers she seeks regarding her mother?

My Thoughts

Witching for Clarity by Deanna Chase is the 4^th novel in the Premonition Pointe series.  It can be read as a standalone for those new to the series, but I recommend reading the series in order.  This will allow you to get to know each of the coven members.   Clarity “Gigi” Martin has been divorced nine months from her abusive ex-husband, James.  She is ready to move forward with her life with help from her friends who are also members of her coven.  Gigi is lucky to have Skylar in her life.  He is her best friend who lives with his husband next door.  There are some delightful characters in this book.  Skylar is a hoot and adds humor to this intense story.  Witching for Clarity has Deanna Chase’s trademark writing which makes the story easy to read.  The story moves along at a quick pace.  There is action and unexpected twists as Gigi searches for answers regarding the disappearance of her mother.  I like how the story ended and we get a glimpse of what to expect in Witching for Moxie.  This story does contain foul language (too much of it for my taste), several references to male anatomy, and intimate situations.  Witching for Clarity is a titillating tale with mystery, intrigue, sparks, magic, family, humor, and friendship.

Spirits, Spells and Wedding Bells by Deanna Chase returns readers to New Orleans, Louisiana.  Pyper Rayne is enjoying her lively, risqué wedding shower at Wicked organized by her friend, Charlie when strippers (oops) cops burst in.  Charlie is arrested for murdering Sam Burke, one of the ladies (aka stripper) who works at the club.  Pyper and Jade know that Charlie did not commit the crime, but the police have a condemning video.  Pyper sets out to prove Charlie’s innocence and find the real culprit.  She is fortunate to have the assistance of her friends along with some helpful spirits.  Of course, what it an investigation without a few laws being broken along the way.  Pyper’s investigation gets derailed when the unthinkable happens.  With her future on the line, Pyper needs to quickly find who is behind Sam’s death.  Join Pyper and the gang for another riotous adventure in Spirits, Spells and Wedding Bells.

Spirits, Spells and Wedding Bells is the fifth entertaining installment in A Pyper Rayne series.  This series does need to be read in order, or you will be lost.  Spirits, Spells and Wedding Bells has such unique characters (the author has a delightful imagination).  I like that they are a close group of friends who are there for each other through thick and thin.  Pyper Rayne is looking forward to her upcoming wedding to Julius.  She is ready to start a family especially after seeing Jade and Kane with their little darling.  Jade and Kane’s little girl is six weeks old which leaves Jade feeling a wee bit tired (and cranky since she cannot have alcohol).  I have enjoyed watching Pyper and Jade fall in love and marry.  I laughed from beginning to end while reading Spirits, Spells and Wedding Bells.  Deanna Chase managed to immediately capture my attention and hold it throughout the book.  Ida May is a one-of-a-kind character whose antics will have you giggling.  I love how protective she is of Pyper’s little dog.  I like the magical aspects of the book and how it is integrated into the story.  The mystery is present, but not necessarily the dominate aspect of the book.  It was still interesting with a shocking twist.  The friendships, romance, magic, ghosts, the businesses, the mystery and the dogs all tie together into one diverting tale.  I was sorry when I finished this book much too quickly.  The only aspect that I do not like is the foul language of which there was way too much of for me.  I wanted to share my favorite Ida May phrase with you.  It is “Stick a fork in me, I’m burning up with sin.  That man is hot.”  Spirits, Spells and Wedding Bells has spirited ghosts, racy lingerie, a dangerous dagger, magical mayhem, a hot hubby, and one enchanting wedding.

Dragons of Bourbon Street by Deanna Chase

Hello!  The Mint Julep Murders by Angie Fox comes out tomorrow.  It is the eighth book in The Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries.  On a Summer Tide by Suzanne Woods Fisher (first book in Three Sisters Island series) will be released on April 30 with Staging is Murder by Grace Topping (I will feature on May 9) and Murder in the Reading Room by Ellery Adams.  

Dragons of Bourbon Street by Deanna Chase takes us back to New Orleans, Louisiana.  Jade Calhoun is seven months pregnant, and she is ready to take it easy the last few months of her pregnancy especially since it is extremely hot outside.  Jade and Pyper Rayne are shopping for party favors for Kat’s upcoming bachelorette party at Hollywood Hustler when Madame Tempest, leader of the Witches Council, along with two flunkies, enter the shop.  They arrest Harper Spelling and quickly take her away.  A little puppy darts out and roars fire.  Jade quickly scoops him up and takes him home with her.  That evening, Pyper and Jade are pulled over and taken in by two thugs from the Witches Council.  It seems that Harper disappeared from her cell.  The Witches Council had confiscated a notebook from Harper with Jade’s name in it with the label “dragon leader”.  Madame Tempest is forcing Jade and Pyper to track down Harper and return her to the Witches Council.  They then learn that dragons are waking up all over the city and Jade needs to stop them from taking control.  Jade has the additional responsibility of helping Kat with her wedding and its related responsibilities plus figuring out where the fire breathing puppy came from and keep him (Flame) from burning down her home.  And Jade thought she would spend her third trimester relaxing (aka napping), cuddling with her husband and eating all the food that she craves.  It is a good thing that Jade has close friends that will assist her.

 

Dragons of Bourbon Street is the ninth entertaining installment in A Jade Calhoun series.  All our regular cast of characters are back plus we get introduced to Flame, Elijah and his familiar Trevor, and Harper Spelling and her cousins.  Even Ida May makes an appearance.  The Witches Council seems determined to mess with Jade even though she is seven months pregnant.  Of course, they fail to understand the needs of someone in her condition which includes access to a bathroom and plenty of food (crackers do not count).  Deanna Chase has a distinctive writing style (I mean this in a good way).  Her casual writing style drew me into the story along with her quirky characters and laugh-out-loud moments.  The mystery is full of twists with illusions, a Cajun familiar breeder, and someone deadly (and mentally challenged) running the show.  Jade has a great group of friends with unique abilities that she can count on to help her with challenging situations.  The take down is one-of-a-kind and jaw dropping.  At the end, Jade and Kane’s daughter makes an appearance and Kat has a very special wedding day.  I suggest reading A Jade Calhoun series in order.  The books build upon each other as the character defeat foes, form bonds and develop as individuals.  It is even advisable to have read A Pyper Raine series (they work together).  I do want to let you know that there is foul language and intimate scenes.  One of my favorite lines is from Jade “my insides felt like they were being ripped right out of me.”  I felt that was a very accurate description of labor.  Dragons of Bourbon Street is a delightful paranormal mystery/romance with dragons, an evil adversary, a tenacious Witches Council, a ghost dog, good friends, a wedding, plus a cuddly fire breathing puppy and other interesting familiars.  You do not want to miss out on this fast paced, action packed and humorous tale.

Happy Book Release Day!  The Last Year of the War by Susan Meissner, Murder Once Removed by S.C. Perkins, Hetty's Secret War by Rosie Clarke (I will feature on March 22) and One Potato, Two Potato, Dead by Lynn Cahoon are a few of the new books out today.

Courage of the Witch by Deanna Chase is the fifth tale in Witches of Keating Hollow series.  Hanna Pelsh is part owner in the Incantation Café with her mother.  She bakes up tasty treats while her mother, Mary manages the café.  Hanna has been missing her friend, Rhys Silver since he pulled away over a year ago.  They had been friends for a long time, and Rhys helped her deal with the loss of sister, Charlotte to a rare autoimmune disease.  Just when they were starting to get become more than friends, Rhys suddenly pulled back.  Rhys works at Townsend Brewery where he has been working on a new line of ciders.  He keeps active, but Rhys misses Hanna.  After what he learned about a year ago, Rhys does not feel it would be fair to Hanna to become more than friends.  Mary Pelsh and Barb Garber decide to set up their children.  Hanna is introduced to Chad Garber a pianist who has just moved to town and he immediately invites her out to eat.  Rhys sees the pair together and the green eyed monster rears its ugly head.  It is time for Rhys to make a choice regarding Hanna.  Tell Hanna what he learned that caused him to withdraw from their relationship or let her go forever.

 

Courage of the Witch is part of the Witches of Keating Hollow series and I believe it is better if you read the books in order (they build upon each other).  Courage of the Witch is well-written (as are all of Deanna Chase’s stories) with steady pacing. Deanna Chase has an engaging writing style that draws the reader into the story.  Hanna is a vibrant woman who loves to bake, spend time with her friends, and yearns for someone special in her life.  She thought Rhys was that person until he told her that they should just be friends.  Hanna began falling in love with Rhys when he took her to a dance in high school when her date stood her up.  He made it a very special night.  Rhys Silver is charming, kind and loyal.  He is in love in with Hanna and does not want to see her hurt.  Misunderstanding and miscommunication always lead to trouble.  Hanna and Rhys have a difficult path ahead of them, but the result is worth it.  As it says in the book “love is messy”.  There is laughter, heartbreak, love, drama and tears in this steamy paranormal romance.  I like the magical elements included in the story.  I just wish there was more of them.  I do want to let readers know that the story does contain foul language.  Courage of the Witch is an emotional, heartwarming romantic story that is a must read for fans of Deanna Chase.

Bitten at Daybreak by Deanna Chase

Happy Sunday!  I hope you are enjoying a relaxing day.  Something Read, Something Dead by Eva Gates is the fifth A Lighthouse Library Mystery.  It will be published on March 13.  Canyons, Caravans and Cadavers by Tonya Kappes releases on March 25.  It is the sixth A Camper & Criminals Cozy Mystery.  The Last Second by Catherine Coulter & J.T. Ellison releases on March 26.  It is the sixth novel in A Brit in the FBI series.  Mother's Day Mayhem by Lynn Cahoon will be available on April 2.  It is A Tourist Trap Novella (about 75 pages).  An Amish Reunion by Amy Clipston, Beth Wiseman, Kathleen Fuller and Kelly Irvin will be available on April 9.  A little something for everyone in the upcoming releases. 

Bitten at Daybreak by Deanna Chase is the third tale in the Last Witch Standing series.  Phoebe Kilsen has been searching for her brother, Seth for the last eight years.  She has finally found him and finds herself in an alternate reality.  Phoebe is unable to cross back over because her doppelganger slipped through and took her place.  She hopes that Dax will be able to notice the difference and come searching for her.  Phoebe must keep her wits about her while in this alternate world.  The alternate Phoebe is married to Eadric Allcot, the vampire and Phoebe wants to avoid his bed (and his fangs) at all costs as well as his wrath.  Dax is worried when Phoebe fails to show up for work or take his calls.  When shifters are being murdered by a witch, Dax fears Phoebe is behind the killings.  Find out what happens to Phoebe in Bitten at Daybreak.

 

Bitten at Daybreak is a fast-paced paranormal romantic suspense novel (that is a mouthful).  It picks up where Bloodlust by Midnight ends with Phoebe following Seth into an alternate reality.  I recommend reading the Last Witch Standing series in order.  It will help you understand the characters and how Phoebe ended up in her current predicament.  I found Bitten at Daybreak to contain good writing with a fast pace.  There are strong characters in the book that include witches, fae, shifters and vampires.  The point-of-view switches between worlds.  Phoebe in the alternate universe and Dax in their world.  The two storylines tie together, and I like how everything was wrapped up at the end.  I especially appreciated the epilogue.   It was nice to see Phoebe develop as a person.  She is still her strong, determined self but Phoebe comes to some realizations regarding her relationship with Dax (I do not want to spoil the book for you).  I do want readers to know that there is foul language, extreme violence and steamy intimate scenes.  Phoebe and Dax are in for blood-tingling adventure in Bitten at Daybreak.  

The other two novels in Last Witch Standing series are Soulless at Sunset and Bloodlust by Midnight.  Deanna Chase's next novel is Dragons of Bourbon Street.  The ninth book in The Jade Calhoun Series will be out on April 16.  I am featuring Please Don't Feed the Mayor by Sue Pethick tomorrow.  I hope you have a fabulous day.  Take care and Happy Reading!

The Shifter's First Bite by Deanna Chase: Witch Island Brides

Hello!  The Whispered Word by Ellery Adams will be out on November 27.  It is the second book in A Secret, Book & Scone Society Novel series.  Slay Bells by T.C. Westcott releases on November 23.  It is the first book in the unique A Christmas Village Mystery series. 

The Shifter’s First Bite by Deanna Chase takes us to Witch Island.  Zinnia Franklyn is working on werewolf cookies for the crew filming Engaged to a Werewolf on the island when Reed Sinhawk walks into the bakery.  Zinnia fell in love with Reed with she was a teenager, but she did not hear from him after he left to make it big in Hollywood.  Reed is one of the stars of Engaged to a Werewolf and has been supposedly dating his co-star, Krissy Kimble.  Zinnia only has to take one look at Reed to verify she still is attracted to him and her love has not faded.  Reed has only ever loved one person, and he is determined to win her heart.  To get his happily ever after, he will have to deal with Krissy, overzealous reporters, the network and his father.  Will Reed’s inner wolf get the bite it desires?

The Shifter’s First Bite is a humorous and steamy story.  Deanna Chase has an engaging writing style that draws the reader into her world.  Reed is a sexy, handsome man who left Witch Island at eighteen to become an actor.  He has succeeded, but love is missing from his life.  Zinnia has been in love with Reed since she was a teen.  She wrote to him after he left, but Zinnia never received a response to her chatty letters.  Now they have a second chance, but there are obstacles in their way.  The desire between Reed and Zinnia is palpable.  I am surprised the hot springs they enjoyed did not reach the boiling point.  Krissy, though, keeps getting in their way.  There are some highly entertaining scenes that will have you in stitches (just thinking about it has me chuckling).   A person should know to wear underwear when trampling through the woods because you never know what you might fall into.  The Shifter’s First Bite does have foul language (unfortunately) and graphic intimate scenes between our main characters.  While The Shifter’s First Bite is the third book in Witch Island Brides, it can be read alone.  The island’s healer, Mystia appears in this story along with Zinnia’s sister, Frankie. The Shifter’s First Bite is a quick read that has cute characters, humor, romance, magic and passion.

Bloodlust by Midnight: Last Witch Standing

Greetings!  Premeditated Peppermint by Amanda Flower and Christmas Cake Murder by Joanne Fluke come out on September 25 along with Silver Anniversary Murder by Leslie Meier.  I am looking forward to reading each one of them.  

Bloodlust by Midnight by Deanna Chase is the second novel in Last Witch Standing series.  Phoebe Kilsen, witch and vampire hunter for the Void, is heading for the Arcane library to pick up some research from swamp witch, Simone Bernard.  After dealing with a vampire who decided to get too close, Phoebe arrives at the library to find Simone injured and clutching a neon green syringe in her hand.  The deadly drug, Scarlet has been harming and killing shifters including Leo’s girlfriend, Rhea.  After obtaining help for Simone, Phoebe is summoned to Director Halston’s office.  The director explains that the drug has been altered to prey on shifters.  She wants Phoebe and her partner, Dax Marrok to round up the living victim’s before they harm others.  Dax texts that he has information on Phoebe’s missing brother, but before he can provide details he is attacked with the toxic Scarlet.  Phoebe needs to find the culprit behind these dastardly deeds and procure a cure before it is too late.  Will Phoebe be able to rescue Dax?  What happened to Phoebe’s brother?

Bloodlust by Midnight is best read after Soulless at Sunset otherwise you will be confused in the beginning.  The book is well-written with a fast pace.  You will be on the edge of your seat as Phoebe races against time to save Dax and the other affected shifters.  She is worried about her missing brother, but Phoebe knows that she must prioritize (no matter how much she wants to chase down the lead on her brother).  There are vampires, witches, shifters and humans in this paranormal adventure.  Phoebe needs to find out who is behind the deadly drug while keeping an eye on Dax (the drug has terrible side effects).  Phoebe is a strong, smart female character who will do what it takes to protect those she cares about and the members of the paranormal community.  Dax and Phoebe are a good pairing.  You can feel the chemistry between them.  I do want to warn readers that the story contains foul language and the intimate scenes are descriptive.  My rating for Bloodlust by Midnight is 4 out of 5 stars.  I thought the ending to be clever and humorous.  It will leave readers dangling and desperately wanting the third book in the Last Witch Standing series.

The Warlock's Enchanted Kiss: Witch Island Brides

Good Day!  No Grater Danger by Victoria Hamilton comes out on June 19.  It is the seventh A Vintage Kitchen Mystery.  Airships, Crypts and Chocolate Chips by Erin Johnson releases on June 23.  It is the sixth novel in Spells & Caramels series (paranormal mystery series).  

The Warlock’s Enchanted Kiss by Deanna Chase is the second novel in Witch Island Brides series.  Carrie Carmichael is the wedding coordinator on Witch Island.  For the last five years she has attracted to her best friend, Austin McKee.  They have gotten close to kissing a few times, but each time Austin pulls away.  After a particularly hot few moments with Carrie, Austin heads to Witchin’ Impossible for a drink.  Things turn sour when old girlfriend, Brinn Hughes spots him and her obsession begins anew.  What Austin has not told Carrie is courtesy of a powerful love spell, his kisses turn women into love obsessed stalkers.  Carrie gets Austin away from Brinn.  Little did they know that the incident at Witchin’ Impossible would be the high point.

The Warlock’s Enchanted Kiss contains good writing and has a quick pace which make it easy to read.  There are fun characters in the story.  Austin is a handsome man who will get your engines revving.  Carrie is a lovely girl and only has eyes for Austin.  Mystia, Penny McKee, Brinn, Darwin Cooper, and Quinton add to the madcap humor.  Then there is the witty and bawdy dialogue.  Deanna Chase has a way with words.  There are some steamy moments between Carrie and Austin (I’m surprised the scenes did not set my e-reader on fire).  Readers will be delighted with this romantic comedy.  Be prepared for many laugh out loud moments as you take a wild romp through the pages of The Warlock’s Enchanted Kiss.  Each book in the series can be read alone.

Soul of the Witch is the story of witches, family, friendship, magic, guilt, tragedy, lost love, forgiveness and so much more.  The Townsend family has four girls:  Faith, Noel, Yvette and Abby who were raised by their father, Lincoln.  Soul of the Witch focuses on Abby.  The point-of-view alternates between Abby and Clay.  I like that we get to see things from each character’s perspective.  Soul of the Witch is well written and has a steady pace.  The story contains great characters with my favorites being Daisy and Olive.  Val is the villain of the story and she adds drama (one of those characters that you love to dislike).  It allows readers to see what Clay will do to protect his daughter (we get to see his core beliefs).  Abby is a complex character.  She has been living in New Orleans where she earns a living creating soaps and lotions infused with a touch of magic as well as selling her art.  Abby has a boyfriend who has become focused on himself (his career and how Abby can help him succeed).  She needs to understand what exactly happened ten years ago which means talking to Charlotte’s mother.  To move forward with her life, Abby needs to forgive herself.  Keating Hollow is a small town where everyone knows your business.  The descriptions of the delectable delights available at A Spoon Full of Magic will have your mouth watering and wishing you could transport yourself into the story.  For those of you that enjoy alcoholic beverages, there are some creative brews available at Townsend’s Keating Hollow Brewery (I am amazed at the various flavors).  My only negative comment is there is some predictability.  Soul of the Witch is a charming paranormal romance novel.  My rating for Soul of the Witch is 4 out of 5 stars (I liked it).  There is a scene near the end that will just melt your heart (one of those “ahhhh” moments).  It is a heartwarming, magical story that will delight fans of Denna Chase (click her name to discover the authors other novels).  Heart of the Witch is the next book in Witches of Keating Hollow series.
