Blackberry Beach by Irene Hannon

Blackberry Beach

Book Summary

Blackberry Beach by Irene Hannon has Katherine Parker taking time off in Hope Harbor, Oregon.  She has rented a secluded house above Blackberry Beach. Katherine wants to remain incognito so she can have peace while she thinks about her future.  After what happened recently, Katherine is unsure that what she has worked to achieve is what she still desires.  Zach Garrett, owns The Perfect Blend, is ready for a wife and family but the dating pool in Hope Harbor is limited.  When Zach sees Katherine, he is smitten with her immediately.  He does not understand why she goes out of her way to avoid him.  A local project may be what is needed to bring the two together.  Zach’s Aunt Stephanie has retired and decides to visit Zach.   Stephanie meets Frank Simmons, and the pair are attracted to each other.  Will this pair get a late in life happily ever after?

My Thoughts

Blackberry Beach by Irene Hannon is the 7th A Hope Harbor Novel.  It can be read as a standalone for those new to the series.  I did find Blackberry Beach to be a slow starter.  I had a difficult time getting into the story.  I think it would have been beneficial if the reason for Katherine being in Hope Harbor had been revealed earlier.  Once I was about halfway through, I found the tale more appealing and my interest began to be engaged.  I enjoyed the descriptions of the beach, the town, and Katherine’s chocolate creations.  Hope Harbor is a charming town with friendly residents.  I especially liked Charley and the seagulls (Floyd and Gladys).  I appreciated the epilogue which nicely wrapped up the storylines.  This is a nice, clean Christian romance (no intimate situations or bad language).  Three of the themes in Blackberry Beach of second chances, forgiveness, and redemption.  It was great that there was a later in life romance (gives me hope).  This is a Christian tale that is never preachy.  I like how the author incorporated Faith and God into the story.  Blackberry Beach is a good book to read while relaxing by the pool.

Blackberry Beach is available from Amazon*.  The other The Hope Harbor  Novels are hereHope Harbor which began the series can be borrowed through Kindle Unlimited.  You can find Irene Hannon's other novels here.  Thank you for popping by today.  Next time I am sharing my review of Fresh Brewed Murder by Emmeline Duncan.  It is the debut of A Ground Rules Mystery series.  I hope that you have a positive day.  Take care, be kind, and Happy Reading!

A Patchwork Past by Leslie Gould

 A Patchwork Past

Book Summary

A Patchwork Past by Leslie Gould has Sophie Deiner dealing with a Lupus flare-up.  Her doctor tells her that she needs two weeks of rest, quiet, and good food.  With her roommate’s noisy late nights, Sophie takes a chance and returns to her family farm in Nappanee, Indiana.  She is thankful that her father, the local bishop, agrees to let her stay, but Sophie can tell that her mother is not pleased.  Sophie begins helping Jane, the owner of Plain Patterns, with her bountiful garden where she reconnects with Derek.  It is through Derek that Sophie meets a local migrant family who begins having legal problems.  Sophie wants to help them with their plight, but she is unsure what she can do for them.  While weeding with Jane one day, Jane begins telling Sophie the story of Mary who got caught up in the Great Chicago Fire.  Sophie finds herself inspired by Mary.  Sophie knows she needs to tread carefully.  While she wants to help the migrant family she has come to know and care about, Sophie worries that she could make the situation worse for them.  Sophie also needs to make decisions about her own future.  What choices will Sophie make?

My Thoughts

A Patchwork Past by Leslie Gould is the second novel in the Plain Patterns series.  A Patchwork Past can be read as a standalone.  I found A Patchwork Past to be a unique Amish novel.  It is not like other Amish novels.  I like how it tells two stories and ties them together.  Sophie Deiner needs rest from a Lupus flare-up and returns home to the family farm.  She never felt that she fit into her Amish community.  Jane, the owner of Plain Patterns, is kind to Sophie.  While working on Jane’s garden and quilting, Jane tells her the story about Mary, a woman who traveled to Chicago with her father and ends up in the middle of the Great Chicago Fire in 1871.  While at home, Sophie becomes involved in the lives of migrant family who work on the farm next to her family.  I was quickly drawn into the historical part of the tale.  I wanted these sections to be longer.  I thought A Patchwork Past was well-written with developed characters.  The story moved along at a good pace.  I could tell the author did her research for this book.  I like how she incorporated the information into the story and wove parallels to Mary’s story.  Both Sophie and Mary want to help people and do the right thing.  Faith, friends, and family are woven throughout the story.  I thought Sophie’s story will give people a better understanding of autoimmune diseases like Lupus and Fibromyalgia.  Many people do not understand these diseases and, unfortunately, believe the person is faking it.  I appreciated that we are given an epilogue that nicely wraps up the story.  The author blended the various storylines together into one inspiring tale.

A Patchwork Past by Leslie Gould can be purchased from Amazon*.  Piecing it  All Together is the first book in the Plain Patterns series and it is a Kindle Unlimited book.  You can find Leslie Gould's other novels here.  Thank you for stopping by today.  I will be sharing Blackberry Beach by Irene Hannon next time. I hope that you have a joyful day.  Take care, be kind, and Happy Reading!

Frothy Foul Play by Tonya Kappes

Book Summary

Frothy Foul Play by Tonya Kappes has the town of Honey Springs buzzing about the opening of Crissy Lane’s Bee Happy Resort with its holistic health spa.  Roxy Bloom is curious as to the identity of Crissy’s investor, but Crissy is keeping the person’s identity under wraps.  She has made Roxy promise to attend the grand opening, but Roxy has a staffing problem.  Loretta Bebe happens to have a solution with her granddaughter, Birdie.  Roxy might have her hands full with Birdie whose behavioral problems are the reasons she is in Honey Springs.  Tom Foster is a reporter with Healthy Women’s Magazine who plans to do a feature on Crissy’s new spa.  After Tom has an encounter with Birdie, Roxy learns that the reporter is known for his caustic reviews that have caused enterprises to go out of business.  At the grand opening, Roxy is looking out of the window of a guest room when she observes someone killing Tom Foster.  Unfortunately, Roxy’s new employee becomes the prime suspect and Loretta insists on Roxy using her skills to prove Birdie’s innocence.  Can Roxy clear Birdie’s name or will Loretta’s granddaughter become one caged bird?

My Thoughts

Frothy Foul Play by Tonya Kappes is the 9th novel in A Killer Coffee Mystery series.  It can be read as a standalone for those new to the series.  Everything a reader needs to know is included.  Roxy Bloom owns the Bean Hive in Honey Springs, Kentucky where she roasts her own beans for unique blends of coffee for her customers plus bakes up sweet treats.  She is happily married to Patrick Cane and they have two fur babies at home.  I always enjoy diving into one of Tonya Kappes’ lighthearted tales.  I like the author’s conversational writing style which makes the story a joy to read.  This humorous tale moved along at a quick pace which had me finishing it in a couple of hours.  The series has a cast of developed, quirky characters that includes Maxi Bloom, Loretta Bebe, and Bunny.  The author’s word imagery brought the town to life for me.  The interactions between Roxy and Birdie are great.  I like Birdie who is a great addition to the series.   The mystery surrounding the death of Tom Foster had several good suspects.  Anyone of them could have done the deed.  There are clues to help the reader solve the crime if you are paying close attention.  There is a secondary mystery that is driving Roxy crazy.  She wants to know the identity of Crissy’s investor.  The person is quite a shocker.  Pepper and Sassy are so cute, and I love reading about their antics.  There is an adorable black kitten up for adoption who needs a forever home and a name.  The humor scattered throughout the story keeps it fun and lighthearted.  I enjoyed visiting Honey Springs, Kentucky and I look forward to catching up the Bean Hive family again soon.   Frothy Foul Play is a lively cozy mystery with a cute kitten, a departed reporter, killer coffee, a covert backer, a new employee, and a bevy of baked goods.

Frothy Foul Play is available from Amazon* along with the other novels in A Killer Coffee Mystery series.  You can find Tonya Kappes' other novels here.  Tonya Kappes has Paddlers, Promises, and Poison publishing on March 25.  It is the 16th A Camper & Criminals Cozy Mystery.  Thank you for visiting today.  I am a stop on the Great Escapes Virtual Book Tour tomorrow for A Side of Murder by Amy Pershing. It is the debut of A Cape Cod Foodie Mystery series.  I hope you will join me and that you have a peaceful day.  Take care, be kind, and Happy Reading!

Farm to Trouble by Amanda Flower

Book Summary

Farm to Trouble by Amanda Flower has Shiloh Bellamy returning home to Cherry Glen, Michigan after fifteen years.  Her father needs her help revitalizing the family farm.  Shiloh intends to turn it into an organic farm-to-fork farm with, eventually, a cafĂ©.  In order to accomplish her goals, Shiloh needs an investor and her father left it up to her.  Unfortunately, Shiloh picked the wrong man with Jefferson Crocker who has his own agenda.  Shiloh had no idea that the man has been buying up surrounding land for a wind farm that the whole town is against.  Shiloh arrives at the farmer’s market to meet Crocker the next day and finds him dead from a gunshot wound next to the honey booth.  The owner of the booth is quick to point her finger at Shiloh as the guilty party.  Police Chief Randy Killian has Shiloh at the top of his suspect list as well as her father, Sully.  Before Shiloh can get to work on fixing up the farm, she must find Crocker’s killer.

My Thoughts

Farm to Trouble by Amanda Flower is the first book in A Farm to Table Mystery series.  It contains Amanda Flower’s engaging writing style that makes the story easy to read.  The author took the time to develop the characters and establish the setting.  Shiloh Bellamy left Cherry Glen, Michigan fifteen years ago after the death of her fiancĂ©, Logan.  Her father, Sully injured his back and has asked Shiloh to return to help with the family farm.  She quits her job, sells her home, and cashes in her 401K.  Unfortunately, her father had sizeable debts which took all of Shiloh’s funds.  She now needs an investor if she is to restore the farm and make it a success as an organic farm.  Unfortunately, Shiloh is not privy to the local gossip and picks the wrong man to invest in the venture.  When the investor ends up dead, Shiloh along with her father are prime suspects.  Shiloh talks to various people in the town trying to get information to help her solve the murder. I hope we see more active investigating in future books along with action.  There were little things that pointed at the killers’ identity.  There is a secondary mystery involving money that Grandma Bellamy saved and hid away for Shiloh.  She needs to figure out the clues if she wants to find it and save the farm.  I like that we get to know Shiloh, her father, her cousin, various friends of Shiloh’s, and some of the townspeople.  I enjoyed the descriptions of the Cherry Glen and the farm.  Huckleberry, Shiloh’s pug dog, is a show stealer.  He is such a cutie.  Other scene stealers are Esmerelda the cat and Hazel, Quinn Killian’s eleven-year-old daughter.  I have a feeling there will be a romance blooming between Quinn and Shiloh in the future.  I thought the author captured the small town feel especially with the people’s attitudes.   This was a cute story that I enjoyed reading.  I look forward to the next A Farm to Table Mystery.  Farm to Trouble is a charming cozy mystery with gossip galore, an insatiable investor, a high-strung hound named Huckleberry, tasty cherry treats, a cute convertible, and a mystifying treasure quest.

Farm to Trouble is available from Amazon*.  Amanda Flower has Lemon Drop Dead coming out April 27.  It is the 6th book in An Amish Candy Shop Mystery series.  You can find Amanda Flower's other novels here.  Thank you for visiting today.  Tomorrow I am reviewing Werewolves of London by Angie Fox.  It is the third and final book in The Monster MASH Trilogy.  I hope that all of you have a cheery day.  Take care, be kind, and Happy Reading!

Mending Hearts by Janice Kay Johnson

Book Summary

Mending Hearts by Janice Kay Johnson has David Miller returning to Tompkin’s Mill after being absent for six years.  He fled after the death of his best friend and business partner, Levi.  David feels that Levi’s death was his fault, and the guilt has been eating at him.  The day after he returns, David encounters Miriam Bowman at a barn raising.  Miriam and Levi had been courting and most people believed they would soon announce their betrothal.  Miriam blames herself for Levi’s death.  She works at the local quilt shop and has yet to marry.  With the Bowman farm bordering David’s new property, they are thrown together frequently.  It gives them a chance to talk and they become friends.  David has loved Miriam since she was a teen, and his feelings continue to deepen.  He does not feel he is worthy of Miriam while she does not feel worthy of love.  Miriam and David need to overcome their feelings of guilt if they are to move forward with their lives and have a fulfilling future.

My Thoughts

Mending Hearts by Janice Kay Johnson is the 2nd A Tompkin’s Mill Novel.  It can be read as a standalone for those who have not read Turning Home.  I thought Mending Hearts was well-written with developed characters.  I like that we get to catch up with the characters from Turning Home.  David Miller and Miriam Bowman both feel guilt over the death of Levi.  Both of them need to come to terms with Levi’s death plus forgive themselves.  It is the only way they can move forward with their lives.  We see Miriam and David struggle with the guilt and loss of faith.  I like that we get to know Miriam and David as well as their families and community.  I like how the people in the community help each other.  If someone has a need, they are there to assist (whether they want it or not).  I thought Mending Hearts was an emotional novel about love, forgiveness, family, faith, and second chances.  I like the drama in the second half of the book.  It added another level of depth to the story.  We get to see Miriam and David struggling with their faith.  They are both having difficulty turning their troubles over to God and relying on Him.  I did find the pace of Mending Hearts to be a little slow at time plus there is repetition.  I also thought the story was a little long.  These small issues aside, I enjoyed Mending Hearts.  I especially loved the puppies (they sounded adorable) and Copper, the horse David was training.  Mending Hearts is a heartwarming Amish tale with buggy rides, barn raising, quality quilts, fixing fences, disquieting guilt, and a special someone.

Mending Hearts publishes Tuesday, February 23 and it can be obtained from Amazon*.  Turning Home is the first A Tompkin's Mill NovelFinding Hope is the third A Tompkin's Mill Novel and it will publish on June 29.  I appreciate you stopping by today and reading my review.  Tomorrow I am sharing Farm to Trouble by Amanda Flower.  It is the beginning of A Farm to Table Mystery series.  I hope that you have a sparkling day.  Take care of yourself, be kind, and Happy Reading!

Mimi Reads Between the Lines

by Jennifer J. Chow

About Mimi Lee Reads Between the Lines

Mimi Lee Reads Between the Lines (A Sassy Cat Mystery)

When a local teacher is found dead, LA’s newest pet groomer Mimi Lee finds herself in a pawful predicament—with her younger sister’s livelihood on the line.

Mimi Lee is on top of the world. She has a thriving pet grooming business, the sweetest boyfriend, and a talking cat to boot. When she arrives at the elementary school where her sister Alice works, she's expecting a fun girls' night out—but instead finds a teacher slumped over in her car, dead.

Alice was the last one to see Helen Reed, which instantly marks her as the prime suspect. Unable to sit quietly and let the authorities walk all over her sister, Mimi starts snooping and talks to Helen’s closest contacts, including one jumpy principal, a two-faced fiancĂ©, and three sketchy teachers. With the help of her sassy but savvy cat, Marshmallow, and a cute kitten named Nimbus, the clock’s ticking for Mimi to get to the bottom of yet another case before her sister gets schooled.

My Book Summary

Mimi Lee Reads Between the Lines by Jennifer J. Chow has Mimi Lee meeting her sister at Roosevelt Elementary on February 13 for a girls’ night out.  In the parking lot, Mimi notices that something is off about the way a woman is sitting in her car.  Upon closer inspection, they find Alice’s co-worker, Helen Reed dead.  Since Alice was the last person known to have seen Helen, she is Detective Brown’s prime suspect.  Mimi has no intention of standing back while the police slowly work the case.  She begins questioning the faculty at the school, Helen’s roommate, and her laidback fiancĂ©.  Mimi with help from her snarky and telepathic cat, Marshmallow and found cat, Nimbus works to find the real killer and clear her sister’s name.

My Thoughts

Mimi Lee Reads Between the Lines by Jennifer J. Chow is the 2nd book in A Sassy Cat Mystery series.  I recommend reading Mimi Lee Gets a Clue before embarking on the newest addition.  I did not and I was lost in the beginning.  Mimi Lee owns Hollywoof, a pampered pooch palace in Los Angeles, California.  She owns a cat that communicates with her telepathically named Marshmallow.  Mimi is close to her teacher sister, Alice.  Her father always seems to be busy with golf while her mother spends her time trying to marry off her daughters.  When Helen Reed, a teacher at Alice’s elementary school, is murdered, Detective Brown puts Alice at the top of his suspect list.  Mimi is not about to let her sister linger on the suspect list when she can do a little snooping with the aid of Marshmallow.  The whodunit had several suspects, a red herring, and subtle clues. I like how Mimi and Marshmallow work together to solve crimes.  That Marshmallow is one smart cookie.  The mystery can be solved before the reveal if you pay careful attention to the clues.  When not at her pet salon, she spends time with her boyfriend, Josh.  They get to enjoy Valentine’s Day together.  Mimi and Alice are worried about her parent’s marriage.  They decide to plan a little something to help them.  Alice finds a small kitten outside her classroom that Mimi takes into her home.  She calls the little ball of fluff Nimbus who has something in common with Marshmallow.  Mimi will need to come up with a plan to keep Nimbus safe.  As you can see, Mimi is one busy woman.  She certainly gets some unusual requests at Hollywoof.  They provided humor in the story.  We also get to learn about the Lee family mixed culture and the food they enjoy (lots of yummy food descriptions).  I enjoyed the Harry Potter references and loved the nook under the stairs in Helen’s home.  Mimi Lee Reads Between the Lines is a lighthearted cozy mystery with a cute kitten, a matchmaking mama, fun foreign fare, parent problems, a setup sister, one panicky principal, and a cheeky cat.

Mimi Reads Between the Lines is available from Amazon*, Penguin Random House, BookShop, B&N, Kobo, Google Play, and IndieBound.  The first book in A Sassy Cat Mystery series is Mimi Lee Gets a Clue.  You can find Jennifer J. Chow's other novels here.  As part of the tour, the author is giving away one print copy of Mimi Lee Reads Between the Lines (sorry, but open to US only).  You can use the Rafflecopter form below or click here.  Thank you for visiting today.  The Amish Midwife's Hope by Barbara Cameron is planned for tomorrow.  It is the first A Hearts of Lancaster County Novel.  I hope that you have fruitful day.  Take care, be kind, and Happy Reading!

An Amish Christmas Wedding by Amy Clipston, Vannetta Chapman, Kelly Irvin, & Kathleen Fuller: Review & Excerpt

About the Book

An Amish Christmas Wedding

by Vannetta Chapman, Kathleen Fuller, Kelly Irvin, and Amy Clipston

From bestselling authors of Amish fiction come four delightful stories perfect for celebrating love, joy, and the everyday miracles Christmas brings.

Evergreen Love by Amy Clipston

Ryan Lapp had promised to marry Lorene Bontrager as soon as he was able to build them a house, but the day never came. Ryan moved away. Five years later, Lorene has settled in to her old maid role, and she’s shocked when her younger sister announces her quick engagement to Ryan’s younger brother. As they rush to plan the wedding, Lorene is constantly around the family she almost joined. Worse, she’s forced to face Ryan himself, who has returned to town. As both Ryan and Lorene examine their own feelings, they must decide if they can find grace with each other—and the young people they once were—this Christmas season. There just might still be love in their future.

Holiday of Hope by Kelly Irvin

Henry Lufkin is one of four bachelors who lived in the West Kootenai, Montana, cabins that were destroyed by wildfires. He’s the only one of them who hasn’t since married, but he likes his solitude. Then an old friend asks him to care for his son, and Henry has to share his small cabin and his life with bewildered and rebellious ten-year-old Tommy. When the child encounters trouble at school, Henry reaches out to Tommy’s teacher. Leesa Yoder never expected to find herself single and teaching sixteen young scholars, and she certainly didn’t anticipate an inexperienced bachelor telling her how to do her job. Amid the flying sparks, can Henry and Leesa see that there might be hope and love in this unexpected situation?

Wreathed in Joy by Kathleen Fuller

Mary Wengerd and Jakob Mullet have been best friends since childhood. Pressured by friends and family, they decided to date—with disastrous results. When they break up, their friendship is ruined. A year later, Mary is baking her Englisch friend’s wedding and groom cakes for a Christmas Eve wedding. Mary loves the Christmas season, and had always dreamed of marrying during that time. Now she wonders if she’ll ever marry. After she and Jakob form a tenuous new friendship, Mary breaks her arm. As he steps in to help her with the cakes, Mary is inexplicably and suddenly falling for him. But they’ve already dated, and that ended so horribly. Could it be better this time?

A Christmas Prayer by Vannetta Chapman

Widower Micah Miller runs the Amish Tour Company, offering Englischers a glimpse of a simpler life as well as tea at Rachel King’s. Rachel has never married and has recently lost her parents. When Micah comes across an abandoned and injured dog, he gives it to Rachel for company. As Rachel is charmed by the dog and shocked by news of the existence of family she never expected, her heart and mind bend toward the possibilities of change in her life—even toward the possibility of love.

My Thoughts

An Amish Christmas Wedding contains four delightful and heartwarming Amish stories from Amy Clipston, Kathleen Fuller, Kelly Irvin, and Vannetta Chapman.  I found all of them to be well-written with steady pacing and charming characters.  There are lovely themes in each book.  Love, hope, grace, faith, and second chances are just a few of them.  I enjoyed reading about the Amish Christmas traditions where they focus more on God and family than on material things.  Of course, I just loved the Christmas weddings.  It is a magical time of year to get married.  I enjoyed all four stories, but I admit that my favorite was A Christmas Prayer by Vannetta Chapman.  I liked the older main characters and that sweet dog.  An Amish Christmas Wedding is a lovely way to spend an afternoon.  It got my mind off stressful situations.  It provided me with peace and the hope that love might find me yet.  We need more clean, wholesome stories like these.  An Amish Christmas Wedding has put me in the mood for Christmas (I have been humming Christmas carols all day).  An Amish Christmas Wedding contains four sweet Amish stories from four talented female writers.
