The Inn on Mirror Lake by Debbie Mason

 The Inn on Mirror Lake
Book Summary

They swear they’re not right for each other but the matchmakers of Highland Falls are out to prove them wrong.

Elliana MacLeod has come home to whip the Mirror Lake Inn into tip-top shape, the only way to prevent her mother from selling the beloved family business. In between watching over mischievous, cigar-sneaking Grandpa Joe and trying to help Highland Falls win the Most Romantic Small Town in America contest, Elliana’s plate isn’t just full, it’s overflowing. She can’t refuse Nathan Black’s offer to fix up the inn, even if the gorgeous law enforcement officer has made it abundantly clear he considers her a friend, and nothing more.

Nate knows he’s not cut out for long-term relationships or white picket fences, and that’s what Ellie deserves. Yet keeping her at arm’s length is nearly impossible, especially once they’re working—and living—side-by-side. The more time he spends with Ellie, the more he wants, and not just for today but forever. When Ellie’s ex returns to town, has Nate missed his chance with the woman of his dreams?
My Thoughts

The Inn on Mirror Lake by Debbie Mason has Ellie MacLeod working to get the family inn in shape.  The inn has been in the family for five generations and her grandfather, Joe has lived there is whole life.  Ellie moved into the inn eight months ago after Grandpa Joe had a stroke.  Grandpa Joe is doing fine, but Ellie’s mother is determined to sell the property.  Ellie along with the Sisterhood of Highland Falls is working to prove the Mirror Lake Inn is a viable concern.  Ellie’s matchmaking grandmother has enlisted Nate Black to help Ellie.  Nate moves into the inn with Ryder.  Ryder’s father was Nathan’s best friend.   Ryder has been rebelling since his father was murdered.  His mother is hoping Nate will be a good influence since Ryder looks up to him.  In addition, Ellie’s sister, Bri asked Ellie to take in her dog, Toby to keep it safe.  Bri’s husband and the dog are not a good mix (the dog is a good judge of character).  Highland Falls is a contender for the Most Romantic Small Town in America contest.  Ellie must redecorate the rooms at the inn to fit a literary theme before the contest sponsors to come to visit.  Ellie has her plate full and while she appreciates Nate’s help it is hard to concentrate when he is around.  Ellie knows that Nate is not interested in a long-term relationship.  Nate is trying to keep Ellie at arm’s length, but it hard when the matchmakers in town keep pushing the two of them together.  When Ellie’s ex returns to town, Nate realizes that he might want the happily ever after.  Nate wonders if it is too late to win his soul mate.

The Inn on Mirror Lake is the fourth Highland Falls NovelI did not know when I picked up the book that it was part of a series.  I quickly discovered that it is best to read A Highland Falls series in order.  It was like I came into a movie halfway through it.  I felt that I was missing key details.  I discovered that Nate and Ellie were introduced in Falling in Love on Willow Creek (Book Three).  Characters from the previous books are in this story along with Ellie and Nate’s family members and residents of the town.  The author created some great characters.  I just love Grandpa Joe, the Judge, and Ryder.  Ellie has a special ability which added another dimension to the story.  I enjoyed the setting of Highland Falls and the inn at the lake.  It sounded like such a peaceful place.  The Inn on Mirror Lake is a complex book with varying layers.  I loved the humor in the story.  The scenes with Ellie and Nate with his sisters are especially amusing. Grandpa Joe and the Judge’s antics also had me chuckling.  There is plenty of flirtation and sizzle between Nate and Ellie.  The chemistry between the pair is palpable.  There are intimate thoughts and scenes in the book.  I do want to mention the significant amount of foul language (which I find offensive).  I like how the townspeople help Ellie with the Mirror Lake Inn.  The various characters from the first three books appear throughout the story.  They are worked seamlessly into this tale.  There are some serious moments as well.  Ellie’s sister, Brianna has an abusive husband.  I thought the author handled this delicate subject very well.  Ryder is dealing with the loss of his father.  He needs guidance, love, and man’s best friend.  The ending is charming and will leave readers smiling.  The Inn on Mirror Lake is a cute romantic tale with a cigar loving grandpa, meddling matchmakers, a shocking secret, a vigilant judge, protective pooch, a brutal brother-in-law, a frustrating filmmaker, and flirtatious friends.

The Inn on Mirror Lake is available from Amazon*.  You can find the other A Highland Falls Novels here.  The next A Highland Fall Novel is At Home on Marigold Lane which comes out on September 27.  You can find Debbie Mason's other novels here.  Thank you for stopping by today.  February just flew by so quickly. I am putting the finishing touches on my St. Patrick's Day outdoor decorations.  I have shamrocks, leprachauns, and pots of gold. Tomorrow I am featuring The Sugarcreek Surprise by Wanda E. Batter Off Dead by Maddie Day

Batter Off Dead
Book Summary

Robbie and her new husband Abe O’Neill are enjoying a summer evening in the park with fellow townsfolk excited for some Friday night fireworks. In attendance are senior residents from Jupiter Springs Assisted Living including Roy Bird, father to South Lick’s very own Police Lieutenant Buck Bird. Despite his blindness, Roy is a member of his group home’s knitting circle, spending quality time with some lovely ladies.

But when the lightshow ends, one of the knitters who sat with Roy is found dead, a puncture wound in her neck. The poor woman’s death echoes that of Buck’s mother and Roy’s wife—an unsolved homicide. To help find the killer, Robbie’s going to have to untangle the knotty relationships deep in the victim’s past . . .

Includes Recipes for you to try!
My Thoughts

Robbie and her new husband, Abe O’Neill, have just finished enjoying fireworks in the park and are ready to head home when they hear a scream.  Vi Perkell had come to the park with some of her fellow residents from Jupiter Springs Assisted Living.  She was with Lieutenant Buck Bird’s father, Grant Bird.  Unfortunately, Vi is dead from a puncture wound to her neck.  The next morning, Buck stops by Pans ‘N Pancakes for sustenance and mentions that the crime is eerily similar to his mother’s murder which has never been solved.  Robbie has good instincts when it comes to solving crimes.  With Robbie’s restaurant being the equivalent of an office water cooler, she can pick up the latest gossip and ask some subtle questions.  Robbie will need to unravel the clues and knit them together if she is going to help catch the killer.

Batter Off Dead by Maddie Day is the tenth A Country Store Mystery.  It can be read as a standalone if you are new to the series.  However, if you read the series in order, it allows you to get to know the characters and the town.  I thought Batter Off Dead contained good writing and developed characters.  The book moved along at a steady pace.  I like the small-town atmosphere in this series.  Robbie Jordan is happily married to Abe and her restaurant is doing very well.  The restaurant is busier than ever.  We follow Robbie as she goes about her day-to-day life in South Lick, Indiana.  I like how the author incorporates Indiana phrases and history of the area into the story.  The mystery has two components.  It involves a murder in the present and one in the past.  Both have a tie to Lt. Buck Bird.  There were a handful of suspects in the death of Vi Perkell. Robbie asks questions and listens to diners to gather clues.  Robbie needs to be careful, or she could get burned.  The whodunit is wrapped up with a tense reveal and all my questions were answered.  I like that we get to meet Buck’s father and grandmother.  Simone, Buck’s grandmother, is sharp as a tack and a stylish dresser.  Grant, Buck’s father, is a sweet man who can no longer see but creates lovely, knitted items.  A friend of Robbie’s is pregnant, and it makes her think about the future.  I enjoyed my visit to South Lick where I got to catch up with Robbie, Abe, Buck, and the others plus I got to solve a crime.   There are recipes at the end for some of the items served at Pans n’ Pancakes.  Batter Off Dead is a warm tale with delectable crepes, a cold case, a copycat crime, a crafting club, curious clues, and a caught killer.

Batter Off Dead is available from Amazon*.  You can find the other A Country Store Mysteries here.  Maddie Day has Murder in a Cape Cottage coming out September 27.  Follow Maddie Day on Amazon to get updates on her latest book releases.  It is the 4th A Cozy Capers Book Group Mystery series.  Thank you for joining me today.  On Monday, I am sharing my review of The Inn at Mirror Lake by Debbie Mason.  It is the fourth A Highland Falls Novel.  I hope that you have a fun weekend (or restful if that is what you prefer).  Take care, stay safe, and Happy Reading!

Caramel Pecan Roll Murder by Joanne Fluke

 Caramel Pecan Roll Murder

Book Summary

Embracing a sweet escape from her usual routine at The Cookie Jar, Hannah gets asked for her help in baking pastries at the local inn for a flashy fishing competition with big prizes and even bigger names. But the fun stops when she spots a runway boat on the water and, on board, the lifeless body of the event’s renowned celebrity spokesperson…

Famed TV show host Sonny Bowman wasn’t humble about his ability to reel in winning catches, and no one knew that better than his tragically overworked sidekick, Joey. Did Joey finally take bloody revenge on his pompous boss—or was Sonny killed by a jealous contestant?

With goodies to bake and a mess of fresh challenges mixed into her personal life, it’s either sink or swim as Hannah joins forces with her sister, Andrea, to catch a clever culprit before another unsuspecting victim goes belly up…

Features Over a Dozen Cookie and Dessert Recipes from The Cookie Jar!

My Thoughts

Hannah Swensen is still reeling from the death of her husband, Ross.  Hannah and her furbaby, Moishe have been staying at Norman’s place.  Hannah is not sure that Moishe will ever be able to return to their home.  She feels that she needs to make a change soon because of all the rumors floating around town regarding her and Norman.  Sally, owner of the Lake Eden Inn with her husband Dirk, is in a dilemma and needs Hannah’s assistance.    The Walleye Fishing Tournament is taking place at the inn and Sally is hoping to get them to return every year.  Her pastry chef has a family emergency and Sally needs someone to make the pastries.  Hannah feels this is a chance for a change of scenery and is happy to help Sally.  Hannah gets a room at the inn since she needs to be up early to bake the breakfast items.  Hannah is on the lake with Norman one afternoon when they spot a boat going around in circles.  They find the famed fishing television host, Sonny Bowman slumped over the wheel of the boat—dead.  Hannah is on the case with Andrea as her sidekick.  They find there are several people who wanted the handsome host dead.  Hannah and Andrea fish for clues in the hopes of reeling in the killer.

Caramel Pecan Roll Murder by Joanne Fluke is the 28th A Hannah Swensen Mystery.  I do not feel Caramel Pecan Roll Murder is a standalone book.  New readers will find the background information needed to be missing.  Fans of the series (like me), though, will enjoy it.  I have read every Hannah Swensen mystery.  Caramel Pecan Roll Murder picks up a few weeks after the death with Ross, Hannah’s “husband” has been cleared up.  Hannah is lacking her confidence after everything that has happened.  I hope she gets it back soon.  I understand that Hannah loves her condo, but I feel it would be best for her and Moishe if she sold it and found a new place to live (I see her in a cozy little house with lots of play space for Moishe and Cuddles).  I feel bad for Moishe, and I am glad that he has Cuddles to keep him company and has Hannah’s mother to spoil him.  The mystery had a dead television host at a fishing tournament.  The man was a piece of work so naturally there are a number of suspects.  Hannah with help from Andrea sets out to hook the killer.  Hannah could use the diversion as her thoughts keep going back to Ross.  There are good clues to help readers solve the crime before the reveal.  The reveal was dramatic and tense.  We get all our questions answered regarding the whodunit.  The pacing was a little slower for Caramel Pecan Roll Murder.  I enjoyed my latest visit to Lake Eden.  We are left with a little cliffhanger at the end of Caramel Pecan Roll Murder.  I am curious how it will turn out.  I enjoyed catching up with Hannah, Mike, Norman, Delores, Andrea, Michelle, Lonnie, Lisa, and, of course, Moishe.  I look forward to seeing what Hannah will do next.  Caramel Pecan Roll Murder is a tasty treat with timorous Moishe, a sloshed Sonny, a distressed Sally, a helpful Hannah, a considerate Norman, able assistant Andrea, a sympathetic Mike, and a mysterious murder.

Caramel Pecan Roll Murder is available from Amazon*.  You can find the other twenty-seven A Hannah Swensen Mysteries here.  I appreciate you taking time out of your busy day to visit.  I will be sharing my thoughts on Batter Off Dead by Maddie Day tomorrow.  It is the tenth A Country Store Mystery.  I hope that you have a relaxing weekend.  I have been trying to get one project a day done around the house.  I have a list of projects that need to be accomplished.  I am trying to get the outside jobs done before the heat and humidity descends (summers can be brutal in Florida and it begins early).  Take care, stay safe, and Happy Reading!

An Amish Bride by Rosalind Lauer

 An Amish Bride
Book Summary

In Joyful River, Pennsylvania, the faith-filled Amish community lives side by side with the English world, healing problems and overcoming hardship with compassion, love, and abiding trust in Gott’s plan.

For Sam Lapp, every day spent working on his family’s dairy farm is a reminder of Gott’s bounty and goodness. And he’s found the person he wants to share that life with. Sam remembers the exact moment he stopped seeing Sadie Beiler as just his sister’s best friend, and saw instead the graceful, loving woman she’s become. If only he had seen it before Sadie began courting someone else . . .

When Sadie first caught the eye of a handsome auctioneer, she felt blessed, hopeful that marriage would provide an escape from her troubled home. But as months stretch on without a proposal, Sadie discovers a worrying new side to her beau—and a growing kinship with Sam. Thoughtful, hardworking, kind to his visiting English cousins and to her, Sam shows Sadie that real love is just a stone’s throw away. But when an unexpected obstacle forces a separation between them, can steadfast faith make Sadie an Amish bride at last?

My Thoughts

An Amish Bride by Rosalind Lauer is the second novel in Joyful River series.  While An Amish Bride could be read as a standalone, I believe it is best to read An Amish Homecoming first.  I thought An Amish Bride was well-written with developed characters.  Miriam Lapp is my favorite.  She is such a sweet woman who will not hesitate to meddle if it helps those she loves.  The story is engaging with a good flow and pacing.  We get to know Sadie Beiler and Sam Lapp.  Sadie is best friends with Essie Lapp, Sam’s younger sister.  Sadie spent her spare time in the Lapp household and considers it her second home.  Sam had always seen Sadie as a sister until she blossomed into a beautiful woman.  He finds that she is kind, gentle, and compassionate.  Sam would like to court Sadie, but he hesitated too long.  Sadie is now going with Mark Miller, but Sam is worried because he knows that Mark has a dark side.  When Mark goes out of town without telling Sadie, she begins to question their relationship.  She spends more time at the Lapp home and finds something unexpected.

An Amish Bride is a sweet story.  We get to follow the day-to-day life of the Amish.  It is amazing how rules differ between church districts.  I would have a hard time letting men make decisions for me.  The Amish are bound by the rules set forth by the Bishop and the elders.  Sadie must follow a ruling of the elders and learns how difficult it is to obey yet remain faithful.  We get to catch up with the characters from An Amish Homecoming.  They three sisters have been staying with the Lapp family for a year now and have a different perspective than when they arrived.  A trip home sheds light on the differences between the two homes.  The girls need to make decisions about their future.  Isaac, Sam’s cousin, is making some hard decisions.  He likes using his medical knowledge to help people and wants to continue doing so in the future.  Isaac will need to make a choice between a higher education and being baptized in the Amish faith.  I did find the book a little long and I would have liked less repetition.   Some details are repeated twice or more.  I enjoyed reading An Amish Bride.  It is a great diversion from reality.  I hope there will be another tale in the Joyful River series.  An Amish Bride is a tender tale with a weepy wedding, strep throat sadness, a boorish beau, a firm friend, a disappointing decision, a meddling mother, and a happy house.

An Amish Bride is available from Amazon*.  The first novel in the Joyful River series is An Amish Homecoming.  You can find Rosalind Lauer's other novels here including A Seasons of Lancaster Novels.  Thank you for stopping by today.  I will return tomorrow with my review of Caramel Pecan Roll Murder by Joanne Fluke.  It is the latest A Hannah Swensen Mystery.  I hope that you have a merry day.  Take care, stay safe, and Happy Reading!

Batten Down the Belfry by Diane Kelly

 Batten Down the Belfry

About the Book

Batten Down the Belfry is the fourth in the delightful cozy mystery series from Diane Kelly set in Nashville, Tennessee—where the real estate market is to die for.

Here is the church, here is the steeple…

Carpenter Whitney Whitaker and her cousin Buck have successfully flipped houses, but this is the first time they’ve attempted to renovate a house of worship. Still, the colorful stained glass in the country church has caught Whitney’s eye, and she’d love to breathe new life into the abandoned building. What’s more, the place has perfect acoustics. Could the worship hall be reborn as an entertainment venue with its parsonage repurposed as a pre-show bistro?

Open the doors and see all the trouble.

The owner of the horse farm next door has asserted a legal claim to the church property, rendering their title uncertain. If that’s not bad enough, while rehabbing the church, Whitney’s cat Sawdust discovers a bombshell in the bell tower—the body of the man who’d delivered their beautiful new replacement windows. What transpired in the spire? Who rang the man’s bell and why?

The steeple is keeping its secrets and, when a second body turns up, things become even less clear. Can Whitney help Detective Collin Flynn solve the crimes before someone else is sent to meet their maker?

My Thoughts

Batten Down the Belfry by Diane Kelly has Whitney Whitaker and her cousin, Buck purchasing an old church and parsonage.  After finalizing the purchase, Whitney and Buck go out to admire their acquisition and decide how they are going to transform it.  Shortly after they arrive, their neighbor, Nolan Sibley shows up with a cattle prod in his hand.  He claims to own the property through adverse possession and wants them to skedaddle.  The only way to settle this land dispute is through the courts.  While waiting for their hearing, Whitney and Buck begin the remodel.  They are going to turn the old church into performance venue.  The old parsonage will become a café where Colette, Whitney’s roommate and Buck’s girlfriend, will serve her epicurean delights.  There project goes south when a man is found at the bottom of the stairs leading to the belfry.  He is pronounced DOA on the way to the hospital.  Before long, a second body turns up nearby.  Are the two deaths tied together?  Whitney sets out to get answers with help from her sidekick Sawdust.

Batten Down the Belfry is the fourth A House-Flipper Mystery.  It can be read as a standalone, but I highly recommend reading all the books in this engaging series.  I thought Batten Down the Belfry was well-written with developed, relatable characters.  I like Whitney Whitaker who is down to earth.  She is friendly and works hard flipping buildings.  Buck Whitaker, Whitney’s cousin and business partner, is a nice guy who is dating Whitney’s roommate and friend, Collette.  Sawdust, Whitney’s cat, steals the show with the chapters from his point of view.  He is a cutie.  Sawdust’s chapters will have you laughing and going “ahhhhh.”  I enjoy the author’s descriptions of Nashville and how she incorporates history of the city (an example is details about the Belle Meade Plantation).  The mystery was well thought it.  I like how everything tied together into one fun whodunit.  The mystery has unusual elements which I enjoyed.  There are twists and unexpected revelations that I found delightful (I just love a challenging whodunit).  There is a great reveal, and all the details are provided at the end, so I did not have any lingering questions.  I just love how one character met his maker.  It was very fitting.  Whitney and Buck transformed a church into a performance venue.  I liked reading about the various details and the work they did to accomplish the task.  They also turn the parsonage into a café with Collette as the chef.  I like the name Collette came up with for the café.  I cannot wait to read the next A House Flipper MysteryBatten Down the Belfry is an entertaining cozy with a land clash, a thoroughbred tyrant, a clever kitty, a bonging bell, a converted church, a disordered delivery, a messy murder, and a curious carpenter.

Due to a fire, Batten Down the Belfry will not be available until March 1 (I found out on Sunday, February 20).  Batten Down the Belfry is available for pre-order from Amazon*.  You can read an excerpt of Batten Down the Belfry by clicking here.  The other three A House-Flipper Mysteries are Dead as a Door Knocker, Dead in the Doorway, and Murder with a View.  You can find Diane Kelly's other novels here.  Diane has Proof is in the Poison publishing June 7.  It is the second A Southern Homebrew Mystery.  On October 25, A Trip with Trouble will be released.  It is the second A Mountain Lodge Mystery.  Thank you for stopping by today.  I hope I have helped you to find a new book, author, and/or series.  I am featuring An Amish Bride by Rosalind Lauer tomorrow.  It is the second novel in the Joyful River series.

Her novels have received starred reviews from Library Journal, Publishers Weekly, and Romantic Times, and she had been featured in USA Today, First for Women, and Woman’s World. Today, Flower and her husband own a farm and recording studio, and they live in Northeast Ohio with their two adorable cats.  Visit her at www.amandaflower.com.

My Thoughts

Put Out to Pasture by Amanda Flower has Shiloh Bellamy hosting Fall Daze at Bellamy Farm.  Shiloh has baked up hundreds of her organic treats to sell to the attendees.  Shiloh is surprised at how many people showed up for the event and stay even after the loud argument between Kristy Brown and Minnie Devani (attendees got an extra show).  The last of the festival goers are leaving for the day when Shiloh hears a woman screaming.  Quinn and Shiloh race over to find Minnie dead at the foot of the scarecrow.  Evidence at the scene points to Kristy as the guilty party.  Shiloh is quick to dig into the case.  She is not about to let her bestie go away for murder.

Put Out to Pasture is the second Farm to Table Mystery.  It can be read as a standalone if you have not read Farm to Trouble.  I like Amanda Flower’s engaging writing style.  I know when I start one of this author’s books, that I will quickly be drawn into the tale.  The characters are delightful.  They are warm, friendly, and relatable (there are one or two exceptions).  Shiloh Bellamy is working hard to restore Bellamy Farm despite her father’s negative comments and unhelpfulness.  I enjoy the descriptions of the Bellamy Farm and the surrounding area.  The author’s word imagery brings the scenery to life.  The mystery was a fun one to solve.  The victim was not well-liked, which means there were several good suspects.  There is misdirection to distract you from the true killer.    The clues are there if pay close attention.  The reveal wraps up the whodunit nicely.  I thought Amanda Flower created a fun and unique mystery.    I just love Shiloh’s little pug. He is a cutie.  Shiloh has additional trouble when the other half of Bellamy Farm is sold by the developers to Tanner Birchwood who has the same vision as Shiloh.  I am looking forward to Shiloh’s next adventure.  Put Out to Pasture is a refreshing tale with a fun fall festival, deep fried delights, a scarecrow crime scene, a framed friend, a precious pug, a new can-do neighbor, and a cunning killer.

Put Out to Pasture is available from Amazon*.  The first book in Farm to Table Mysteries is Farm to Trouble.  You can find Amanda Flower's other engaging cozy mysteries here (follow her on Amazon to get updates on her latest releases).  Amanda has Peanut Butter Panic publishing August 23.  It is the seventh An Amish Candy Shop MysteryFrozen Detective by Amanda Flower releases December 6.  It is the second A Piper & Porter Mystery.  I appreciate you stopping by today and reading my review.  Here are a couple of the books that have published today:  An Amish Bride by Rosalind Lauer, Batten Down the Belfry by Diane Kelly (UPDATE:  Release date changed to March 1 because of fire at warehouse), A Promise of Forgiveness by Jo Ann Brown (a good book), Caramel Pecan Roll Murder by Joann Fluke, The Inn on Mirror Lake by Debbie Mason, Strength in the Storm by Laurel Blount (a charming book), Batter Off Dead by Maddie Day, and A Deadly Bone to Pick by Peggy Rothschild.  I look forward to book release day (I am a book geek and I admit it). I wake up to new books on my Kindle. Strength in the Storm by Laurel Blount

 Strength in the Storm
Book Summary

In this touching Amish romance, a brokenhearted woman and a steadfast man discover that the safest place to weather tragedy is in each other’s arms.

After the murder of both her parents, Emma Hochstedler returns to the small community of Johns Mill, hoping to resume her quiet existence. Amish builder Samuel Christner is the biggest—and the strongest—man in town. In fact, the gentle giant has only one weakness—Emma. Even though she broke his heart, he won’t let his childhood sweetheart face her troubles alone. He hires Emma as a nurse for his elderly aunt…and finds himself falling for her all over again.

But while romance blooms, storm clouds gather. And when darkness falls, it will take all Sam’s strength—and all their love—to see them through.
About the Author

Award-winning author Laurel Blount writes captivating romances full of grit and grace—with characters who’ll walk right off the page and into your heart. She lives on a farm in Georgia with her husband, their four fabulous kids, and an assortment of ridiculously spoiled animals. Whenever she's not working, you can find Laurel with a cup of tea at her elbow, a cat in her lap, and a good book in her hand. Connect with her at www.laurelblountbooks.com.
My Thoughts

Strength in the Storm by Laurel Blount is a heartwarming story that will capture your heart.  Strength in the Storm is the second A John Mills Amish Romance.  It can be read as a standalone for those who have not read Shelter in the Storm, however, you will be missing out on a special story.  In Strength in the Storm, we get Samuel Christner and Emma Hochstedler’s story.  Emma and Sam were best friends in school until an incident changed their relationship.  That did not stop Sam from doing what he could to protect Emma.  The majority of the reporters have left Johns Mill, but now the screenwriter for the movie is bothering Emma.  Sam is not about to let that happen.  Emma’s younger sister has had a challenging time since witnessing her parent’s murder.  It is suggested that Emma may be coddling her sister which is preventing her from recovering.  When Sam mentions that his sister, Leah is looking rundown from taking care of their crabby Aunt Ruth, Emma volunteers for the position.  Sam stops by every few days to check on Emma (and Aunt Ruth, of course) and looks forward to seeing her smiling face.  Sam finds himself falling for the pretty maedel despite his Aunt Ruth’s opposition.  What happens, though, when danger reenters Emma’s life?  I thought Strength in the Storm was well-written with developed, relatable characters.  I just loved Birdie, Ruth’s Englisch neighbor.  She is such a contrast to Ruth.

Strength in the Storm picks up where Shelter in the storm ended.  I found myself drawn into the story and I did not want to stop reading (makes it hard to get chores done around the house).  The author does not shy away from tough subjects.  Strength in the Storm deals with the good and bad.  You never know what life is going to throw at you next and I like that the author captured that in this story.  The faith element hit the right note. I liked that the character’s had strong faith and trusted God to guide them.   There are storms in our lives, but we can trust God to see us through them.  I enjoyed my latest visit to John’s Mill, and I hope that I get to visit again soon.  Strength in the Storm is an engaging Amish tale with a bouncy buggy horse, a petulant aunt, a steadfast Sam, a traumatized sister, an at large lawbreaker, and a caring Amish community.

Strength in the Storm comes out Tuesday, February 22 and it is available from Amazon*.  The first novel in A John Mills Amish Romance series is Shelter in the Storm.  Laurel's next release is Her Mountain Refuge on May 24.  Thank you for visiting today.  I hope that I have helped you to find a new author and series.  Tomorrow I am featuring Put Out to Pasture by Amanda Flower.  It is the second book in Farm to Table Mysteries.  I hope that you have a merry day.  Take care, stay safe, and Happy Reading!

On her first day in the new house, a large, slobbering Saint Berdoodle wanders in. Molly winds up taking on the responsibility of training Noodle since his owner is too busy to do the job. On one of their daily beachside walks, Noodle digs up a severed hand. Once Molly alerts the police and they run a background check on her, an incident from her past makes her an immediate suspect—after all, Noodle’s testimony to clear her name won’t hold much water in court.

To prove her innocence, Molly must rely on instincts keener than a canine to sniff out the real killer. But when Molly’s life is put in danger, will her two very loyal pups be able to rescue her?

About the Author

Always a mystery lover, Peggy Rothschild embraced the tales of Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys before graduating to the adult section of the library.  An English major in high school, she switched to art (another passion) in college.  Peggy lives in the beach community of Ventura with her husband and cats.  In her spare time, Peggy focuses on transforming her yard into a drought-tolerant paradise.

My Thoughts

A Deadly Bone to Pick by Peggy Rothschild has Molly Madison relocating to the West coast with her golden retriever, Harlow after the death of her husband.  Molly is instructing the movers when a large Saint Berdoodle walks into her home (he is a drooler).  It turns out that Noodle’s owner is too busy in the ER to take care of the affectionate dog or train him.  Molly takes over the task and walks him on the beach each morning with Harlow.  Noodle has a good sniffer.  He uncovers a hand on the beach.  Unfortunately, Molly becomes the prime suspect when the cops learn about what happened in Massachusetts.  When Noodle digs up another item, it is clear the lead detective has it out for Molly.  If she is going to get her fresh start, Molly needs to use the skills she learned as a copy and PI to uncover the responsible party.

A Deadly Bone to Pick is the first book that I have read by Peggy Rothschild.  I liked the author’s writing style.  It made for an easy-to-read story with likeable characters.  I like Molly and her canine companion, Harlow.  We also get to meet some of her new neighbors.  Noodle is a delight. He adds humor to the story as well as those “ahhhh” moments.  Noodle is one clever canine.  The author shares information about dog breeds and training as well as agility training.  I learned some interesting facts.  My dog is part St. Bernard (only drools when food is present) and I learned that he has a nose for scents (explains his tracking ability).  The mystery was appealing, but there was not enough of it.  I wanted more details and investigation.  Solving the whodunit is a snap.  I was not a fan of the nasty lead detective (I do not care if he is going through an acrimonious divorce—he should not take it out on Molly).  His younger partner is much nicer and easy on the eyes.  I loved eight-year-old Ava.  She is extremely smart and has parents who are self-involved.  Molly and Ava have a lot in common despite their age difference.  Molly helps Ava train her dog, Huckleberry.  I hope A Deadly Bone to Pick is just the beginning of Molly Madison’s adventures.  A Deadly Bone to Pick is a charming new cozy with cute canines, a clever child, a diligent doctor, an exhumed hand, a distressing detective, a perturbing past, and a determined dog wrangler.

A Deadly Bone to Pick releases Tuesday, February 22 and it is available from Amazon*.  You can find Peggy Rothschild's other novels here.  Thank you for stopping by today.  On Monday, I am featuring Strength in the Storm by Laurel Blount.  It is the second A Johns Mill Amish Romance. I am heading off to rest.  I was walking my dog, Doozy when I had a little accident.  I am not quite sure how it happened, but I ended up on the ground and so did my baby.  Thankfully, Doozy is just fine (he just needed some attention and a few doggie cookies).  I did damage to both hands, my right shoulder, and my right knee.  My father would say I have a hitch in my getalong because I am walking with a limp.  I am grateful that I am walking and did not break any bones.  I was lucky that I was just on the next street over from our home.  I will have to pay closer attention in the future.  I hope that you have a restful weekend.  Take care, stay safe, and Happy Reading!
